Everything Christian for Less!
Last week I was looking for a certain Christian book on the internet. Since I wanted to buy a bunch of them I was scouting around for a good price. I came across a website that sells Christian books and there, plastered across the top of the page, blinked this promise: Everything Christian for Less!I had to chuckle. Boy, isn't that what the world wants? All of the goodies--all of God's grace and mercy--all at a new low, low price. Christianity at a discount. Everything Christian for Less. In Christian circles there's a lot of talk about "cheap grace," and some churches are accused of offering up cheap grace and watered-down gospel without blinking an eye. The Apostle Paul writes to the church in Rome: "...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified FREELY by his grace..." Romans 3:23-24 Does the grace of God cost or is it free? And how much Good News is Too Good to be True? One of the great theologians of the faith, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, writes of cheap grace and costly grac e: "Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate. [Grace] is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."-Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship
So I think this phrase about sums it up, dear friends: Grace is free--but it'll cost you your life. How great is that! Greg
