Panama Canal Ready to Make History
Inaugural Transit of Expanded Canal Set For June 26
COSCO Shipping's "Panama" set sail from the Greek Port of Piraeus June 11 to make its way to Panama and into the history books. The Neopanamax vessel will make the inaugural transit of the expanded Panama Canal on Sunday, June 26, after a 14-day journey. Cosco Shipping's "Panama" is a new vessel that launched in January 2016. The Neopanamax containership is 299.98 meters in length and 48.25 meters in beam, and has a container carrying capacity of 9,472 TEUs. Originally named Andronikos, the vessel was renamed by China COSCO Shipping to pay respect to the people of Panama and for the honor of the inaugural transit. This ship was selected during a draw for the inaugural transit through the expanded waterway. Coincidentally, the ship was built in Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, the same company that constructed the valves that control the flow of water through the new locks of the Canal.
The Panama Canal Expansion is the largest project at the Canal since its original construction. The project will create a new lane of traffic along the Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, doubling the waterway's capacity. The existing locks allow the passage of vessels that can carry up to 5,000 TEUs. After the expansion the Post-Panamax vessels will be able to transit through the Canal, with up to 13,000/14,000 TEUs. The expansion will double the Canal's capacity, having a direct impact on economies of scale and international maritime trade. The expansion will provide the world with greater shipping options, better maritime service, enhanced logistics and supply-chain reliability. Since Neopanamax vessels can now take advantage of the Canal's vast benefits, new routes, liner services and other maritime changes are expected to emerge. The program consists of several components:
* New Locks (Third Set of Locks) * Pacific Access Channel * Improvement of Navigational Channels (Dredging) * Improvements to Water Supply
The Panama Canal expansion is based on six years of research, which included more than 100 studies on the economic feasibility, market demand, environmental impact and other technical engineering aspects. Works on the Panama Canal Expansion began in September 2007 at a total cost of US$5.2 billion.

Freight Railroad Industry's Economic Impact
New AAR Report Is First of Its Kind
Seven of the largest U.S. railroads' spending created $274 billion in economic activity, generated nearly $33 billion in state and federal tax revenue and supported 1.5 million jobs nationally in 2014, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) announced in its " State of the Industry Report" of 2016. Citing new research from Towson University's Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI), the report is the first of its kind to quantify the economic impact of investments by Class I railroads with U.S. operations, AAR officials said in a press release. "Significant capital investments by railroads and the steady presence of a coast-to-coast network that can reliably deliver goods at a cost effective rate generates a ripple effect seen in this study," said Daraius Irani, lead researcher and chief economist at RESI. "Railroad spending means job growth, dollars to communities and global competitiveness." According to AAR, key points cited in the report include: * $28 billion in spending by freight railroads in 2014 is more than half of all federal spending on transit formula grants, federal highway construction programs and airport improvement programs combined. * One job at a freight railroad supports nine others touched by the rail industry, including retail, manufacturing and transportation and warehousing. * The rail industry's state and local tax generation is greater than the taxes collected by 30 individual states in 2014. "For manufacturers and consumers, small and large businesses, energy companies and farmers, freight rail is the basic building block that allows a great sweep of economic activity to take place across the country," wrote AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger in the report. Hamberger and other economists cited in the report take the position that the freight-rail industry's economic impact requires "smart public policy that does not impede day-to-day operations or diminish continued private capital investment," according to the press release.

CSA Scores to be Public in 2 Years -
It will be about two years before Compliance, Safety, Accountability scores will be available again for public view based on Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx comments earlier this month. The five-year, $305 billion FAST Act signed by President Obama in December mandated that FMCSA overhaul the program to ensure it was a reliable safety indicator.
Retail Import Patterns Uneven for Summer - Major U.S. retail container ports are anticipating import cargo volume to be mostly down during the summer, but they should see a significant uptick just prior to the winter holiday season, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released last week by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates. The first half of 2016 is expected to total 8.9 million TEUs, up 0.3 percent from the same period in 2015. Total volume for 2015 was 18.2 million TEUs, up 5.4 percent from 2014. "The unusual patterns seen last year in the aftermath of the West Coast ports slowdown are continuing to make valid year-over-year comparisons difficult," said Jonathan Gold, NRF vice president for supply chain and customs policy. "Retailers are balancing imports with existing inventories but consumers can expect to see plenty of merchandise on the shelves for both back-to-school and the holidays." Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consulting firm Hackett Associates, covers the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades and Miami on the East Coast; and Houston on the Gulf Coast.

Cornerstone Management Teams Compete In Team Building Event
The escape game experience at Memphis Escape Rooms allows players to step into a world of mystery and excitement, and put their wits to the test in an unforgettable, heart-pounding hour of fun.
"While it was a fun evening, it was also an excellent exercise to build and demonstrate teamwork", said Vistage Leader Bob Moore. "It was fascinating to watch our team start out with no organization or direction. Then after a few minutes, sub-teams formed and each worked to decipher a part of the puzzle. As we had success, the energy and enthusiasm of the team increased and solved the next puzzle faster and with more focus."
So which team was able to escape within the 1-hour time allotment? That would be the team of Cornerstone's Sheryl Tyson, Heather McPherson, Pat Berg, Kay Larose, Tara Harrell...and Vistage Leader Bob Moore. Congratulations! |
