2015 KIDS COUNT: Texas Ranks 9th in Nation as Worst State for Kids
The KIDS COUNT Data Book is an annual publication that assesses child well-being nationally and across the 50 states. Using an index of 16 indicators, the report ranks states on overall child well-being and in economic well-being, education, health and family, and community. While data show improvements in child health and education, more families are struggling to make ends meet, and a growing number of kids live in high-poverty neighborhoods.

State of Black Business: Austin-Owned Black Businesses Outperform State Statistics
The Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce recently released data on the state of Black business in Central Texas. According to the recent data, Black businesses are outperforming state statistics on a number of indicators. According to the most recent data,Travis County black-owned business had over two times the revenue of black-owned businesses in other large Texas counties.

United Way of Greater Austin (UWATX) Releases Top Community Needs by District
UWATX recently generated a report summarizing the top community needs by district throughout the City of Austin. Data was collected from the 327,935 calls received through the 211 navigation center in 2014. The top four needs were overwhelmingly the same for each district: Food stamps/SNAP, Medicaid application requests, and rent and electric payment assistance.

Central Health Annual Report: Planning for a Healthy Community
Central Health is celebrating its tenth anniversary as the Travis County Healthcare District. Created by voters in May of 2014, Central Health mission is to create access to health care for those who need it most. According to Central Health's Fiscal Year 2014 annual report, 96,600 patients received services in the past fiscal year. There was a 54% increase in specialty care visits over the previous year, and there was a 9% decrease in Medical Access Program (MAP) enrollees' visits to the Emergency Room. Central Health works with a network of health care partners like the Community Care Collaborative, the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, and Seton Healthcare Family to eliminate health disparities and improve safety net health care delivery in Travis County.

How are Medicaid Waivers Transforming Healthcare?
On Thursday, September 3, Central health will host a regional stakeholder forum on the 1115 Medicaid Transformation Waiver. The Waiver is a collaborative effort on the part of healthcare providers, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission ( HHSC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ( CMS). Its goal is to improve people's healthcare experiences while lowering costs and ensuring better outcomes.
Texas's 5-year Waiver is entering its final year, and this is an opportunity to learn about the many exciting and transformative system enhancements that have been made possible so far. The forum will be hosted by Central Health from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Omni Southpark Hotel. Registration is free, but space is limited.

Registration open for the 2015 National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO)
Registration is now open for the 2015 National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Designing Cities Conference! The conference will take place October 28th through 31st right here in Austin. City of Austin staff will help lead efforts on sessions to discuss key trends in urban street design and transportation policy.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler will kick off the conference with opening remarks. The conference will also feature NACTO Chair and former Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), Janette Sadik-Khan.

City Seeks Applicants for Public Safety Civil Service Commission
The City of Austin is seeking applications for a vacancy on the three-member Firefighters', Police Officers' and Emergency Medical Services Personnel's Civil Service Commission. The Commission was created to ensure general compliance with applicable provisions of Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code, local Civil Service rules established by the Commission, and any current agreements between the City of Austin and associations representing firefighters, police officers and emergency medical service personnel. Language needs in the Greater Austin Area
As Austin grows its global connections, the diversity of languages spoken in the area has grown as well. Just under one-third of residents of the five-county Greater Austin Area (28%) speak a language other than English at home and 11% speak English less than "very well", according to 5-year American Community Survey data. In 22% of Spanish-speaking households and 21% of households speaking Asian languages, no one over the age of 14 speaks English very well. Read more about language needs in our community:

CAN Board of Directors
The CAN Board of Directors monthly meeting will take place from 1 - 3 p.m. on August 14th, at Austin City Hall. At this month's meeting, Provost Charles Cook will give an update on Austin Community College's Student Success Initiatives. The Board will also have a closed session to review and discuss top candidates for the CAN Executive Director position.
