Austin's housing affordability gap for extremely low-income renters
The Urban Institute recently released a report on the housing affordability gap for extremely low-income renters nationwide. The report found that Travis County has only 15 affordable units per 100 extremely low-income renters, ranking 89th out of the 100 largest counties in the country. Link to full report

City of Austin releases Long-Range CIP Strategic Plan
The Long-Range Capital Improvement Program Strategic Plan is used to inform decisions about current and future capital investments that collectively provide the infrastructure needed to support and shape Austin. This best-managed approach advances the community's visions reflected in Imagine Austin, and priorities through the Capital Improvement Program, helping to guide the City in making more strategic and coordinated investments. Austin's housing crisis for people with disabilities
Priced Out in 2014: The Housing Crisis for People with Disabilities is a report by The Technical Assistance Collaborative and the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities Housing Task Force. This biennial national rental housing study documents the severity of the housing affordability crisis experienced by the lowest-income people with disabilities. According to the report, a working-age person with a disability who relies on Supplemental Security Income in Austin would need 116% of their monthly SSI payment to afford a 1-bedroom apartment and 94% for an efficiency.

Austin ranks 1st in the nation on Influential Startup Index
The Austin-Round Rock MSA was recently ranked #1 for startups by the Kauffman Index. The index measures entrepreneurship based on three metrics: the rate of new entrepreneurs, the number of entrepreneurs who started their companies when unemployed, and the number of startups per capita. With about 180 startups per 100,000 people and 55% of adults in a given month becoming entrepreneurs, Austin ranked #1 in the nation. Click here for an article by the Austin Business Journal. One Human Race workshops
Register today for a FREE three-session workshop based on the PBS Series Race: The Power of An Illusion hosted by the Myra McDaniel Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians. This is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of racial issues in the U.S., and participate in the continuing work of racial reconciliation in the Austin community. Town Hall Meeting: racial and ethnic disparities within the child welfare system
Austin AIR (Addressing Institutional Racism) is hosting a town hall meeting on Thursday, July 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at St. John's Community Center. Guest speakers, including Judge Darlene Byrne, will discuss racial and ethnic disparities within the child welfare system.

The Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce presents the State of Black Business in Central Texas
The Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce will conduct the annual State of Black Business in Central Texas program on Wednesday, July 15th, at the Crowne Plaza Grand Ballroom from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The program will feature business experts and leaders as they discuss the state of Black businesses within the Central Texas region.

Apply today for AISD UpClose Academy
UpClose offers Austinites a unique opportunity to learn about the Austin Independent School District. Through monthly meetings, participants learn about the District's infrastructure, programs, and services. AISD UpClose classes meet once a month at various district sites to have an "inside look" at key programs. The program begins in September 2015 and ends May 2016.

Help end veteran homelessness with One Key ATX
Help the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) bring an end to veteran homelessness through the One Key ATX campaign. One Key ATX provides landlords the opportunity to commit one unit to housing a veteran family that may have rental barriers. One Key ATX has successfully housed 60 veterans to date.

The 2015 CAN Community Dashboard has been released and CAN wants to present to your office, non-profit or community group. This year's report highlights demographic changes in Travis County and the Austin area, and provides updates on 17 indicators that track the overall well-being of our community. Contact Kevin Paris to schedule a presentation today. Request for feedback: the Dashboard is updated each year with the help of a Dashboard Steering Committee made of local data experts. CAN Board of Directors
The CAN Board of Directors monthly meeting will take place on Friday, July 10th, at Austin City Hall. At this month's meeting the CAN board will get an update on the new Executive Director search, and discuss Pay for Success contracts and other new and innovate ways to fund services in our community. CAN Community Council
The CAN Community Council's July 20th meeting will focus on planning for an October 21st forum on person-centered care. Over the past six months the Council has been listening to, and learning from, Executive Directors of local non-profits who provide services using a person-centered approach.
