Scam Targets Austin Energy Customers
Scammers trick customers into wiring money
Austin Energy is warning its utility customers of a telephone scam that seeks to trick people into wiring money to a bank account. The scam masks the telephone number to make it appear that the call is coming from the Austin Energy customer service office. The callers claim that the customer's electric bill is past due and will be disconnected unless payment instructions are followed.
Austin Energy reminds customers that the utility will never ask customers to make a wire transfer and never seeks credit card numbers or information over the phone. Anyone receiving these calls is asked to call 3-1-1 to report the incident. Click here to learn more about this telephone masking scam.
