Dreamers Learn Life Lessons While Learning to Snowboard and Ski Through SOS
This ski season, Ryan and Eagle Dreamers had the opportunity to ski or snowboard at some of the major ski areas in Colorado through our partnership with the SOS Outreach program. For some of the Dreamers, it was their first time skiing, while others were more experienced and were cruising down the slope as quickly as they could get off the chairlift. AmeriCorps member Daniel Krimmel, commented that one of the Dreamers started off by falling down every few seconds. In the Dreamer's second day though, he started turning on his own and even improved enough to take the chairlift to a run more challenging than the bunny hill! The SOS Outreach is a youth development nonprofit that helps build character and self-esteem for underprivileged youths. They do this through various outdoor activities to inspire youth to make positive decisions that will lead them towards a healthy and successful life. Each Dreamer received professional ski/snowboard instruction, a lift ticket, rental equipment, lunch, and snow clothing. |
"Expanding the Dream" Pilot Program at Casey
This year the "I Have A Dream" Foundation is piloting a new "Expanding the Dream" program in an effort to provide college preparatory programming to the entire 6th grade class at Casey Middle School. Partnering with the University of Colorado - at Boulder, the "I Have A Dream" staff will provide a college focused curriculum to all 210 sixth graders during the school day. We will be highlighting the differences between college and middle school, campus life, and how to pay for college. This program will include multiple in-class lessons, a tour and event on the CU campus, and an assembly at Casey for College Friday on April 11th!
