2013 Tennis Play Day
Over 150 Dreamers, Staff, AmeriCorps, and Volunteers participated in the 2013 Tennis Play Day. Year-round funding for life skills workshops, tutoring, and tennis instruction and play is supported by USTA Serves and the Colorado Youth Tennis Foundation (USTA Colorado). The annual Tennis Play Day is one of the highlights of summer programming, bringing Dreamers from all six classes together to play, learn, and share. Thanks to Half-Fast Subs and Babolat for providing lunch and prizes, respectively, for the event. See more photos from the event!

Dreamers Complete Paid Summer Internships

This year, 13 Dreamers from the Casa and Iris classes participated in the Summer Internship Program designed to provide Dreamers with valuable summer work experience in a professional setting. The University of Colorado Boulder and Intrado Inc. continued their collaboration with "I Have A Dream" by offering internships in various departments at their respective organizations. The Dreamers worked with many departments across campus including Environmental Design, the LEEDS Business School, and the Science Discovery Program, among others. At Intrado, Dreamers were assigned to supervisors in Human Resources, Database Administration, and Technical Operations. In addition, one Dreamer also supported the planning and implementation of the National Dreamer Conference, held in Boulder from July 17-20.

Leading up to the Internships, Dreamers worked with College and Career Department staff to fine-tune their resumes, interview skills, and professionalism. This year, staff assisted the Dreamers in setting up bank accounts and filling out the necessary employment paper work - a first for most all of them! During the internships, Dreamers participated in workshops and trainings to help them develop professional skills, learn about money management, and reflect on their professional and career goals.

The paid internships are extremely beneficial to the Dreamers, providing them with hands-on experiences that help develop a variety of skills - workplace etiquette, technology skills, administrative skills, communication skills, time management, and more. At the end of the internships, CU and Intrado arranged receptions that allowed Dreamers to reflect on their experiences and be recognized by their supervisors for their hard work. View more photos of the interns and their hosts.

If your company would like to host an intern next summer, please contact our Dan Sikkink Johnson at 303-444-3636 x11 or [email protected].

About the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County
Since 1990, the award-winning "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has assisted 600 children from low-income areas in achieving their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. The organization adopts entire groups of students from elementary schools, or from low-income housing sites, and works with these children and their families through high school graduation and into post-high school education. Currently, there are six active "I Have A Dream" classes in Boulder County, two in each Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette. The program has doubled expected graduation rates for its graduating classes of students and has awarded over $1 million in scholarships. The program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder Eugene Lang.
