Longmont Dream-Maker Breakfast was a Success!

St. Vrain Valley School District Superintendent Don Haddad, Former Colorado State Senator Brandon Shaffer, "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County CEO Lori Canova, and Boulder Valley School District Superintendent Bruce Messinger

Over 200 people attended the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County's 4th Annual Dream-Maker Breakfast held at the Plaza Convention Center on Thursday, March 14th,

which raised an additional $65,000 to help start the new "Aspen Class" of 50 second grade students from Spangler Elementary and the Aspen Meadows housing site in Longmont.

"I Have a Dream" has now raised 98% of the program funds needed to work with these students over the next 10 years - and to provide a four-year post-secondary scholarship to each student upon high-school graduation.

With a little over a month to go prior to the launch of the new class on May 8th, "I Have a Dream" only needs one more Dreamer to be sponsored at $166 a month for 10 years!

"Raising the remaining funds in the next month is critical to starting our class this spring and allowing us the opportunity to begin the program this school year. By starting now, we can add these students in 2nd grade and continue to work with them over the summer to help ensure that they are academically prepared for the start of third grade" said Lori Canova, CEO of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County.

"I Have a Dream" Welcomes New Staff

The "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County is pleased to announce the addition of two new staff.

Kasia Szewczyk has been hired as Director of Development and brings over 16 years of business development and marketing experience in both the US and abroad. She joined her previous company, ProMorphics, as their first employee and Business Development Director in 2008 and helped the company grow to nearly 20 employees, with customers nationwide.

Kasia also spent nearly eight years at Kelly Services working in a variety of senior marketing roles where she created programs and events for branches in the US, Canada and Mexico. Kasia has had a life-long passion for non-profits, starting with her work with EFAA and Amigos de las Americas in Latin America and continuing with many others that focus on women's and children's causes. Having been a mentor for nearly three years as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, she understands firsthand the incredible difference that mentoring programs make for both the mentee and the mentor.  Kasia has a B.A. in Spanish Literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Elyana Funk has been hired as
AmeriCorps Site Director. She has a B.A. in Comparative Area Studies: Latin America and North America, with minors in Cultural Anthropology and Spanish from Duke University. During her time at Duke, she studied and worked in Ecuador for a semester. She also volunteered with migrant farm workers, tutored immigrant youth, and translated at a public health clinic.

Elyana joined "I Have a Dream" in 2000 and served a year as an AmeriCorps member for the Longmont "I Have a Dream" Casa class. She then joined our staff as the Program Director for the Sanchez Dreamer Class from 2001-2012, supporting those Dreamers from 2nd through 12th grade. After the Sanchez Dreamer Class graduated, she started in her new role as the AmeriCorps Site Director, where she recruits, places, trains, and supervises approximately 19 AmeriCorps members each year who work at "I Have a Dream" program sites and with partnering organizations. Elyana has been involved in other various parts of the community including mentoring high school students in the Student Leadership Boulder program. She currently volunteers on the advisory board of The Family Garden, a parent resource in Longmont. Elyana, her husband, and her 2 young daughters live in Lafayette.

National AmeriCorps Week Honored AmeriCorps Members From Around the Nation

The "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County joined  the rest of the nation honoring our AmeriCorps members during Nat'l AmeriCorps Week, March 9th - 17th.

"I Have a Dream" supports one of the largest AmeriCorps programs in Boulder County hosting 19 members from across the country each year. This is the 12th year "I Have a Dream" has benefited from a collaborative partnership with the Notre Dame Mission Volunteer Program, which allows for the organization's participation in the program. AmeriCorps members provide tutoring, mentoring, and nonacademic support to Dreamers and their families and help sustain "I Have a Dream" programs assisting with fundraising and volunteer recruitment. In exchange for a year of full-time service, AmeriCorps members earn a small living allowance and receive an Education Award that helps pay for college or pay back student loans.

"This is such an important program for our Dreamers and organization as a whole," said Lori Canova, CEO of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County. "Most of the members are recent college graduates, full of energy, and optimistic about their futures. They make wonderful role models for at-risk youth. What they get done during their service is extraordinary, and their continued engagement in their communities after AmeriCorps is even more inspiring. We want Nat'l AmeriCorps Week to inspire many more Americans to serve our country through AmeriCorps."

In recognition of the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums, the "I Have a Dream" AmeriCorps members participated in a community service project on March 11th at the Community Food Share food bank.

About the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County
Since 1990, the award-winning "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has assisted 600 children from low-income areas in achieving their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. The organization adopts entire groups of students from elementary schools, or from low-income housing sites, and works with these children and their families through high school graduation and into post-high school education. Currently, there are six active "I Have A Dream" classes in Boulder County, two in each Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette. The program has doubled expected graduation rates for its graduating classes of students and has awarded over $1 million in scholarships. The program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder Eugene Lang.
