Dear Valued Subscriber

This edition of the AQUAFEED e-Newsletter covers a number of important events and my colleague Richard Sillett, Deputy Editor of IAF, has outlined some of our editorial features below.

I am sure you are looking forward to seeing our last edition of the year. It will have a huge distribution to industry professionals from as far apart as apart as Aquaculture Asia Pacific in Vietnam in December 2013 and Aquaculture America, Seattle 2014, to other shows in between. Please note, International Aquafeed's Editor, Professor Simon Davies, will be in Seattle too. He is always pleased to meet with readers.

International Aquafeed will be distributed at the '9th Symposium of the World's Chinese Scientists on Nutrition and Feeding of Finfish and Shellfish' called SWCSNFFS which will be held on November 12-16, 2013 in Xiamen, China in Chinese.

Since the first SWCSNFFS in Guangzhou in 1992 (organized by Professor Ding Lin of Sun Yat-Sen University and Dr. Jan-Lung Chuang of Nan-Jeon Institute of Technology), seven more symposiums have been subsequently held in Qingdao (1995), Shanghai (1998), Wuhan (2001), Zhuhai (2004), Qingdao (2006), Beijing (2008) and Chengdu (2011). SWCSNFFS is
the largest gathering for global Chinese aquaculture nutritionists, from academia to industry, and is one of the world's leading communication platforms for discussion of updated achievements in aquatic animal nutrition and feed. Our publisher Roger Gilbert has been invited to participate in the program.

This will be the first time our magazine has been translated into Chinese and it will be reaching a most appropriate audience. Well-known Dr Kangsen Mai, who is highly-respected throughout the Chinese aquaculture industry, has been appointed IAF's Associate-Editor - China.

On our return from China, International Aquafeed will be attending this year's SEAFEX Exhibition in Dubai where Mr Gilbert has again be requested to address a conference hosted jointly this time by SEAFEX and the Association of International Seafood Professionals.

Your sincerely

Thoughts from the Aquafeed team

Richard Sillett

Hello and welcome to October's International Aquafeed newsletter. I'm Richard Sillett, the deputy editor for the magazine, and I'm proud to look forward to the new edition to be published early next month.

It's been a busy couple of months for the Aquafeed team, and this is reflected in the magazine, with special reports from the BioMarine Business Convention and Brittany's algae industry.

Our correspondent (and Business Development guru) Darren Parris was on the ground in Halifax, Canada to report on the BioMarine Business Convention. Joining our editor Professor Simon Davies, he will have a full exclusive report of the talking points from the conference.

As for myself, I spent a few days on the northwestern tip of France, finding out how a group of Breton companies is looking to industrialize the region's traditional algae harvesting. One of these companies, Olmix, will be familiar to Aquafeed readers and has already made significant strides exporting its seaweed-based nutraceuticals across the globe.

Although we've spent a lot of time out and about, our technical features certainly haven't been neglected. Natural additives in fish feed have been a hot topic in aquaculture recently, and we've got a pair of articles from Germany's Dr Eckel and Dr Sagiv Kolkovsky of NutraKol explaining how they're having a massive impact on how we deal with fish health and growth.

We're also covering the similarly pressing issue of fish product substitutes in aquaculture feeds, as University of Athens professor Ioannis Zabetakis and Sergio Nates take us through the potential of olive oil by-products and animal co-products, respectively.

Readers interested in the farming technology side of things won't be neglected, as Kristoffer Rist Skøien explains how 3D modelling of the feeding process is preventing losses in Norwegian fish farms.

With previews of major industry events like Asia Pacific Aquaculture in Vietnam and the 7th International Algae Congress in Hamburg, it's sure to be an issue to interest any aquaculture professional. Keep your eyes peeled!

Maggot brain, sustainability reports
The Vancouver Sun reports that Canadian environmentalist and broadcaster David Suzuki has got behind a Vancouver start-up which aims to produce fish feed from insect larvae as a more sustainable alternative to fishmeal. The benefits don't stop at relieving the pressure on the ocean's wild fish reserves: the maggots are fed on traceable food waste destined for the landfill.

Stating the need to maintain aquaculture's current rate of growth as "imperative", the FAO has rubber-stamped a new global partnership between national governments, UN agencies, NGOs and the aquaculture industry. The private-public partnership hopes to fight aquaculture's corner under increasing competition for space both inland and at sea, while ensuring that the solutions found will be sustainable in the long-term.

A World Bank backed report has urged businesses to help safeguard the ocean's fish stocks. Thinking along the same lines as the FAO, it recommends public-private partnerships as part of a 'paradigm shift' in how national governments and seafood businesses work with local communities to protect the vital food sour
