Thoughts from the Aquafeed team
 | Alice Neal |
Hello, Aquaculturists from all over the world have been making their way to Trondheim, Norway for Aquaculture Europe which takes place this week. The 4-day conference, organised by the European Aquaculture Society, has an action-packed programme of seminars and presentations addressing the central theme of 'making sense of science'. Full details can be found online. The conference is complemented by the AquaNor trade show which follows. Organised by the Nor-Fishing Foundation, the show is a chance to find out about the latest commercial developments in aquaculture. There will also be a full seminar programme. Over the weekend, two of the International Aquafeed team, Tom Blacker and Darren Parris, will be packing their bags and heading to Trondheim for AquaNor. They will be on hand to meet readers and distribute the magazine so say hi and grab a copy if you are at the show. Expect up dates on the blog and a full report in the September/October issue of the magazine. Until then, why not check out the latest issue online here. Alice Neal Associate Editor |

New Zealand King Salmon's plans for Marlborough Sounds New Zealand King Salmon's plans for marine farms in Marlborough Sound, New Zealand took one step closer to becoming a reality after High Court dismissed an appeal against them.
The proposals for four sites covering 6 hectares have not been met with universal approval. The plans were originally okayed in February 2011 but after appeals from two groups, a lengthy public consultation was undertaken.
This video attempts to separate the facts from the myths surrounding the proposals. And has some stunning footage of existing King Salmon farms.

NZ King Salmon farm appeal dismissed; Jamacia gets tilapia invetsment; shrimp decline in Bahrain New Zealand King Salmon's plans for marine farms in Marlborough Sound, New Zealand, may get the go ahead after the High Court dismissed an appeal against them.
The decision of the Board of Inquiry, reached in February 2011, to approve four new salmon farming sites in the Marlborough Sounds was appealed by two parties and that appeal was heard at the High Court in Blenheim in May. The news has been welcomed by the government:
"The impacts of these new marine farms on the important recreation and conservation values of the Marlborough Sounds are small. This is about use of only six hectares of more than 100,000 hectares of water space in the Sounds," says Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith.
"We are a Bluegreen Government that wants jobs and development but also wants to ensure we look after our environment and great kiwi lifestyle. This decision confirms this balanced approach." "Primary industries are vital for economic growth in our regions, and aquaculture plays an important role in the Marlborough economy. I welcome the news that extra jobs will be created as a result of these new farms," says Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.
"This decision is another step forward for New Zealand King Salmon in its plans to establish four new farms, delivering an additional $60 million a year in export income and providing 200 new jobs." Read more...
The Jamaican fisheries sector is set to benefit from a multi-million-dollar investment in silver tilapia aquaculture.
The funding comes from Sunshine Aquaculture Limited, in partnership with Aqua Wilson Farm, a 100-acre fresh water fish sanctuary in Hill Run, St Catherine.
The companies hope that improved efficiencies will mean reduced production costs which can be passed on to the consumer. Read more...
Bahrain's shrimp stock is 75 percent below its normal July average due to illegal fishing reports Trade Arabia.
Despite a four-month shrimping ban during breeding season, 200 local dhows (fishing boats) have been caught fishing. As a result of the illegal activities, stocks have dropped dramatically, making fishing difficult for legal fishermen.
At present, the quantity of shrimp is enough but prices have risen and the effects on the future supply are unknown. Read more... __________________________________________________________________________
Fish use smell of determine size; geoduck aquaculture in Washington, USA; Tassel gets BAP certification Fish can find similar sized shoal mates using smell.
Research published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology claims that fish use chemical cues to find other fish of the same size as themselves. Strength in numbers helps animals protect themselves against predators so it makes sense for fish to swim together.
However, until now, it was not known how fish selected shoal mates of similar size to themselves.
The researchers exposed fish from two freshwater shoaling fish species (three-spined stickleback and banded killfish) to chemical cues emitted by fish of varying sizes from the same species.
They found that fish preferred the chemical cues of same-sized fish over those of larger or smaller fish from their own species. Read more...
Commercial geoduck aquaculture could be coming to state-owned beaches in Washington after the Department of Natural Resources gave the go ahead for a pilot programme.
The scheme will measure the positives and negatives of growing the saltwater clams on state aquatic land. Read more... Tassal Group Ltd's Dover, Tasmania, salmon processing plant is Australia's first processing plant to attain Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification and the country's first company approved to offer two-star salmon, the Global Aquaculture Alliance has announced. Tassal was Australia's first company to earn BAP certification in December 2012, with the certification of its first two salmon farm sites.
