Korean involvement in World Aquaculture Adelaide
With the next World Aquaculture Conferences being in Adelaide, Australia in June 2014 and
the following one on Jeju Island, Korea in 2015, it is fitting that there is increased contact and
communication between aquaculture participants in both countries.
World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014 Chairman, Dr Graham Mair said "there are some real
opportunities for collaboration and to build a strong partnership with Korea. We welcome the
chance to develop and build a strong link between Australian and Korean aquaculturists and
researchers. This will strengthen conference sessions in both countries and in particular in
the areas of abalone and tuna."
"Korea is recognised as a leading aquaculture nation in high value aquaculture products and
Australia has much to learn from our regional neighbours," said Dr Mair.
Last year the Australian Abalone Growers Association (AAGA) sent a delegation of Australia
growers to Korea with the support of the Australian Seafood CRC. This year AAGA received
a grant from the Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF), which will allow both countries to further
build on the relationship. The grant for 'Fostering aquaculture networks, collaboration and
investment between Korea and Australia' will enable Korean industry groups (targeting
abalone and future tuna farmers) to visit Australia and the World Aquaculture Adelaide
Conference (WAA14).

Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference 'Positioning for profit'
'Positioning for profit' is the theme of the Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference and Trade Show scheduled from 10-13 December 2013 in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference emphasises the need for the whole industry to take a more strategic approach to expansion.
Simply producing product and getting locked into selling it as a commodity is not the path for industry expansion into the future. New approaches are needed in all areas of business from governance through to research, from harvesting through to marketing, and from education right through the value chain to the consumer.
The Conference, which is hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), organised by the Asian Pacific Chapter of World Aquaculture Society (WAS-APC), supported by RIA2, and AIT and sponsored by Uni-President (Gold), Biomin (Silver) and a number of special session sponsors, will have some unique features.
A highlight will be the first appearance in Vietnam of Emeritus Professor David Hughes from Imperial College, London (a marketing expert) who, besides being the opening keynote plenary, will also conduct a workshop on seafood marketing.
