Dear Valued Subscriber

This is a very exciting month for British people. We are expecting a royal baby to arrival anytime now. Put aside this anxious moment for a while, I wonder if our readers get excited as they wait for the arrival of our magazine at their door step? To keep you calm a bit longer and until the mail is delivered, maybe you can read our daily 'Aquaculturist' blog. It provides you daily with the most exciting news in this industry and once a week you could watch a chosen video. We've reached more than a quarter million of unique readers now on our blog - and that's exceptional in an industry that is still considered niche. You can read our archive magazines too online. It costs nothing to you.

I hope you have booked your hotel and flight to Trondheim for the Aquaculture Europe 2013. This is an exciting Forum and Seminar that you shouldn't miss - read below info. Aquafeed magazine will be freely available there. We will be attending AquaNor after Aquaculture Europe 2013. If you would like to meet us, please drop an email to me and we can make an appointment to see you.

Finally, enjoy this lovely summer weather! We're promised another hot week ahead.

Your sincerely

Thoughts from the Aquafeed team

Alice Neal
Alice Neal

Hello,

I am delighted to announce that the new issue of International Aquafeed is at the printer and online now.

One of my highlights of this issue was interviewing Chris Ninnes, CEO, Aquaculture Stewardship Council. I asked Chris about the need for certification scheme and the role feed manufacturers can play in responsive aquaculture.

This issue really puts the 'international' in International Aquafeed. On the technology front, the team at Waterco, Australia writes about different types of filtration. While Mian Riaz of Texas A&M, USA writes on maintaining mineral quality in extruded feeds.

Elsewhere, we have an article on chelated minerals by Alvaro Rodriguez, Liptosa, Spain and two articles on probiotics by FF Khalil, Ahmed Ismail Mehrim and Montaha E M Hassan, Al-Mansoura University, Egypt and Dr Nguyen Nhu Tri and Prof Le Thanh Hung, Nong Lam University, Vietnam.

Our Expert Topic this issue is channel catfish. Commercial farming of this freshwater species is dominated by the USA and China. In a fascinating look back through the history books, Jim Steeby Mississippi Sate University, USA explores the origins of the commercial channel catfish industry in the USA.

I hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as we did preparing it. I would love to hear any comments of feedback so get in touch at alicen@perendale.co.uk

Video: Seahorse aquaculture
I have been researching seahorses for an article for International Aquafeed. This film showcases the seahorse facilities at the University of Maine, USA.

The resident scientists explain the prevalence of disease in these fascinating creatures and what's being done to tackle it.

Video: Seaweed farming in Sri Lanka
This film is from the series 'For the People By the People' and documents Mangroves for the Future's (MFF) Small Grant Project work in Sri Lanka.

The Sewalanka Foundation, a leading Sri Lankan NGO, secured  a small grant from MFF to start a pilot seaweed culture initiative. This cultivated Eucheuma in offshore cages at Panama and Ullei (in Pottuvil) on Sri Lanka's east coast. The aim of this project was to ensure that women in particular, could benefit socially and economically from the supplementary income provided by cultivating seaweed.

Video: Rendering
Rendering is a vital part of sustainable agricultural production. Renderers take the parts of animals that North Americans choose not to utilize and make them into valuable products like livestock feed, pet food, biofuel, fertilizer, and other industrial products. The truth about rendering is much different than you may have been told.

This informative video by the National Renderers Association is a fascinating insight into the rendering process and includes some information about the use of animal by-products in fish feeds.

The Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund and the European Aquaculture Society have teamed up to organise the seminar "Making Sense of Science" on Tuesday, August 13 - the opening day of the Aqua Nor 2013 exhibition. The purpose of the seminar is to turn the spotlight on knowledge needs in connection with the development of sustainable solutions for the aquaculture industry.

The seminar is divided into two parts: Part I is targeted towards the aquaculture industry and contains presentations and discussion on feeds and feeding; sea lice; recirculation and water saving; sterile fish and innovation driving industry.

Part II is targeted towards industry leaders, the authorities and politicians, with presentations on research perspectives, domestication and markets; genetic effects of escapes; veterinary medicines; value-addition and growth

Part II of the seminar will be officially opened by Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Lisbeth Berg-Hansen.

Important note: All AE2013 delegates have free access to Aqua Nor and hence to this event. However, all those that wish to attend Part II of the seminar need to register online (at the same pages as the programme, as seating capacity is limited).

Korean involvement in World Aquaculture Adelaide

With the next World Aquaculture Conferences being in Adelaide, Australia in June 2014 and

the following one on Jeju Island, Korea in 2015, it is fitting that there is increased contact and

communication between aquaculture participants in both countries.

World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014 Chairman, Dr Graham Mair said "there are some real

opportunities for collaboration and to build a strong partnership with Korea. We welcome the

chance to develop and build a strong link between Australian and Korean aquaculturists and

researchers. This will strengthen conference sessions in both countries and in particular in

the areas of abalone and tuna."

"Korea is recognised as a leading aquaculture nation in high value aquaculture products and

Australia has much to learn from our regional neighbours," said Dr Mair.

Last year the Australian Abalone Growers Association (AAGA) sent a delegation of Australia

growers to Korea with the support of the Australian Seafood CRC. This year AAGA received

a grant from the Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF), which will allow both countries to further

build on the relationship. The grant for 'Fostering aquaculture networks, collaboration and

investment between Korea and Australia' will enable Korean industry groups (targeting

abalone and future tuna farmers) to visit Australia and the World Aquaculture Adelaide

Conference (WAA14).

Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference 'Positioning for profit'

'Positioning for profit' is the theme of the Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference and Trade Show scheduled from 10-13 December 2013 in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference emphasises the need for the whole industry to take a more strategic approach to expansion.

Simply producing product and getting locked into selling it as a commodity is not the path for industry expansion into the future. New approaches are needed in all areas of business from governance through to research, from harvesting through to marketing, and from education right through the value chain to the consumer.

The Conference, which is hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), organised by the Asian Pacific Chapter of World Aquaculture Society (WAS-APC), supported by RIA2, and AIT and sponsored by Uni-President (Gold), Biomin (Silver) and a number of special session sponsors, will have some unique features.

A highlight will be the first appearance in Vietnam of Emeritus Professor David Hughes from Imperial College, London (a marketing expert) who, besides being the opening keynote plenary, will also conduct a workshop on seafood marketing.
