Thoughts from the Aquafeed team
 | Marnie Snell |
Hello, Before I begin telling you what a full issue we have this month, I should probably introduce myself. My name is Marnie and I joined Perendale in February this year as a media and content management apprentice. I am particularly excited about the photo shoot in this edition of International Aquafeed, as I helped with both its production and final design. As well as the photo shoot, this edition of International Aquafeed also brings you an in-depth focus on shrimp, as part of the expert topic feature, and a very interesting article on the nutritional value of live feeds with microalgae, written by Eric C Henry PhD, research scientist at Reed Mariculture Inc. I hope you find this packed edition of International Aquafeed as interesting as I'm finding my time here at Perendale. Enjoy! |

Research conducted on early mortality syndrome (EMS) at a large integrated shrimp farm in Malaysia has indicated that the disease repeatedly manifests in ponds with an increase in pH to 8.5 to 8.8.
Conducted by Noriaki Akazawa, managing director of Agrobest Sdn. Bhd., with assistance from Kinki University and the National Research Institute of Aquaculture in Japan, the full research results are being prepared for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
EMS, more technically known as Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Syndrome (AHPNS), has had a significant impact on shrimp production in Southeast Asia. The research results are encouraging because they provide shrimp farmers with a tool to improve management of the disease in ponds.
A review of water quality data from approximately 80 affected and unaffected ponds stocked during the same month indicated several water quality differences that were correlated with outbreaks. The researchers then conducted replicated aquarium trials with controlled levels of various parameters.
These tests confirmed that the disease repeatedly regressed at lower pH (around 7) and manifested at higher pH (8.5 to 8.8). Survival rates in Agrobest ponds have greatly improved with management of pH to avoid the zone of EMS susceptibility. __________________________________________________________________________ 14/06/2013: Rent prices challenge Chinese aquaculture; abs in prehistoric fish; angler lands huge catfish after two-hour fightRising land prices is putting a strain on China's aquaculture sector. In some of the key southern provinces, rent for aquaculture land has shot up 80 to100 percent. Fish farmers in Fujian, Guangdong and Zhejiang told that acquiring land for ponds is becoming increasingly difficult due to competition from industry and real estate. Shrimp and Tilapia farmers complain that rents have risen from CNY 300 (USD $49) to CNY 900 per mu (15 mu = 1 hectare) to (USD$146). They were "stunned" to find they included abdominal muscles, previously thought to have originated in land animals. Kate Trinajstic, lead author of a paper published in the journal Science, said the discovery was rewriting ideas about early evolution. "These animals had much more complex musculature than modern fish." Read more...An angler has caught a giant catfish after a two-hour battle during which he was dragged neck-deep into a lake. Daniel Sibley of Blaby, Leicestershire, landed the 108lb 4oz "beast" while angling for carp. The fish, caught at Bluebell Lakes, Northamptonshire, is thought to be one of the heaviest ever landed with a rod and line in Britain. Read more...

URI firm developing techniques for tuna aquaculture
Yellowfin tuna swim in a tank University of Rhode Island's Bay Campus in the first U.S. effort to breed tuna in a land-based aqua farm, the university said.
"Worldwide demand for tuna increases yearly, even as tuna stocks are dwindling precipitously," Terry Bradley, a URI professor of fisheries and aquaculture said. "What we're trying to do is produce fish in captivity and take the pressure off the wild stocks."
Bradley and Peter Mottur, director of Rhode Island-based Greenfins, are working to develop techniques to raise tuna from egg to harvest-size while creating a new sustainable industry in Rhode Island.
Bradley and Mottur's efforts to get a few wild-caught tuna to spawn in the URI tank have been challenging, the university said. Because tuna are long-distance migrants that swim at great speeds, acclimating them to a 20,000-gallon, 20-foot-diameter tank has been difficult. Once fish spawn and eggs hatch, the microscopic larvae must be fed live food raised on site then weaned from live food to a dry, formulated feed.
"It's a sustainable project that we hope will create green technology jobs here in Rhode Island to leverage the great intellectual capital we have in the state," Mottur said. "We've already developed a partnership between URI and my company, and we hope to take it from the research phase to the commercialisation phase once we demonstrate tuna breeding and larval rearing success."__________________________________________________________________________
