A word from the Directory Coordinator
Hello and happy new year!
The IMD coordinator job changed hands at the end of last year and I am pleased to have taken up the post for the 2013/14 directory. There is much to get done and our ambitions are higher than ever before to producing a reliable directory with the highest standards and broad depth of information and real benefits for investing in a listing that is truly valuable exposure. Teamwork from others in the team and an extra assistant from early February will be essential for its success. This will be especially true when I exhibit the IMD and other publications of Perendale at GEAPS Exchange in Louisville, Tennessee, USA in late February; it would be fantastic to meet members and users of the IMD there.
The current directory already has advanced pre-orders and will be going to several conferences around the world after July's publication of the 22nd edition. The current edition has mostly been distributed - do place an order now before they are all gone!
Since the previous newsletter in November, companies in many fields have registered themselves, in reverse order of registering: Canada Trading Inc., FrontalRain Technologies, Yasar Group, Personalized Nutraceuticals, Parantez, Finetek, Borg Mills and Biochem GmbH. Daily news and updates are available at the IMD blog: http://www.millinginternational.com.
Do update or register your company's listing now at: http://www.internationalmilling.com. Free and paid options are available online or through our own media file - please contact me for a media file and registration forms.

Grain & Feed Milling Technology magazine and The International Milling Directory are proud co-organisers of
1st GLOBAL MILLING CONFERENCE
There's a new conference on the horizon for millers and the milling industry! It's the 1st Global Milling Conference for milling that covers both food and feed topics. It will be held in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, from February 7-9, 2013.
The organisers are Assocom-India, the publishers of 'Wheat Update' that circulates throughout the sub-continent and Perendale Publishers, the publishers of 'Grain and Feed Milling Technology' magazine which serves millers and those associated with the milling industry around the world. The program outline for the three-day event can be found at: http://assocom-india.com/gmc/index.php
"We are in the process of confirming our speaker line-up and our sponsors," says Mr Raj Kapoor of Assocom. "We are still open to receiving applications for both speakers and sponsors and would welcome all companies and millers with a global interest in our industry coming to this important event. India is a growing market both for our national suppliers and for international companies supplying both equipment and ingredients."
The two organisations are coming together with the aim of creating a meeting place in a major developing country which has easy access from South East Asia, Africa and Europe and is a cost-effective venue. Beginning with a day of registration and a reception, the meeting propoer will focus on food and feed milling issues and will offer a comprehensive range of topics from:
Day Two (Friday, February 8, 2013)
- Reviewing India's grain production, global supply and demand for feed and for food followed by a key not address by Professor K.V. Thomas, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
- Food security
- Feed Safety and Supply
- Food Safety
- Feed Milling Developments
Day Three (Saturday, February 9, 2013)
- Storage and Transportation* New technologies
- Fee & Food Extrusion
- Colour sorting and Process Developments
- Closing keynote address
"India is a unique and diverse country. The common factor is that the milling industry across this country is developing rapidly despite a challenged economy," says Mr Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishers.
"India is proving to be a foil for China and offers companies an opportunity the explore a production system that supplies a 1.22 billion people with their food needs - that's 16% of the world's population," he adds.
India is the fourth largest economy in the world with a GDP of eight percent and while there is a growing middle class, the overall per capita income is still just US$1000. Pundits expect it to rise to the third largest economy by 2035, growing to 60 percent of the size of the American economy by that time.
In addition, India is the world's second largest producer of wheat and rice and surprisingly exports some two million tonnes to Africa, neighouring countries such as Napel and Bangladesh and then further afield to Africa and others. Per ha output of cereals and oilseeds in India continues to climb, yet still ranks between 30-60 percent of the best yields achieved in developing countries.
International visitors and speakers from the USA can expect to pay approximately US$1200 return via Mumbai and should allow a week to make the return journey leaving on February 5 and returning on February 10. Kayak.com is a good source of flight information - while two or three percent more expensive than the cheapest, they have proven reliable in our experience. The conference hotel is: Vivanta by Taj - Connemara Chennai (http://www.vivantabytaj.com/connemara-chennai/overview.html) which is five star hotel and costs Rs.5300/single room (US$94) and Rs.5800/double room (US$106). These rates include breakfast and taxes.Registration fee for international visitors is US$250/person.

TODAY's industry news ...
- Farmers Rice Milling Company Inc. plans a $13.4 million expansion and modernisation of its rice mill in eastern Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, USA creating around 87 jobs.
The 55,000-square-foot expansion of the mill's clean rice packaging and distribution facility will allow the company to increase processing speed and volume
- Happy birthday to FEFANA. The the EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtureshas turned 50.
The first statutes of FEFANA were signed on January 22, 1963 by the National Associations in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The founding members had the forward vision of forming a European Association to act as an interface between the feed additives manufacturing industry as a whole and the European Union, then European Economic Community (EEC), and its Member States authorities. Through integration of the National Platforms and direct corporate affiliation at European level, FEFANA now counts more than 100 members companies from 28 countries including the EU, Switzerland and Norway.
- The European Commission has dismissed any suggestions of a freeze on EU decision making on the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops, reports Europolitics. The Commission is currently in the process of assessing the GM crop files for authorisation of cultivation, Frédéric Vincent, the spokesman for health and consumer policy at the European Commission, told Europolitics, on January 23, 2013. He confirmed that "the Commission has not yet decided whether or not to launch the procedure for authorisation" of cultivation of any of the seven GM crops currently awaiting approval (six maize varieties and one soybean) and that such a decision might not be taken "in the near future".

- The FAO has released a report into food production in Armenia. We haven't featured Armenia on the blog much in the past so I thought I'd share the key points of this story.
Crop production increased by around nine percent in 2012 and prospects for 2013 winter cereal crops are favourable The cereal import requirement of the country is expected to decrease by 16 percent in the 2012/13 marketing year (July/June) compared to the previous year. However, the country is still heavily dependent on cereal imports, mainly wheat. Prices of staples, wheat flour and bread, increased steadily in the second half of 2012 and reached record levels in November. The increase mainly reflects higher prices in the regional export markets, as the country imports some 60 percent of its wheat consumption requirements.
- Wheat flour crisis hits garrison city, Rawalpindi, India as20kg bags of the flour hit Rs800 against the official rate of Rs670.
As a result, the prices of roti, bread and rusk have gone up despite the City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR)'s claim that there was no shortage of wheat flour or an increase in the prices. Last week, the CDGR increased the price of the 20kg wheat flour bag from Rs618 to Rs670 but the retailers refused to accept it and fixed the price at Rs800.
- A Cargill beef processing plant in Texas, USA is to close on February 1, 2013 due to dwindling cattle supply. The Plainview, Texas facility has come under pressure after years of drought in Texas and Southern Plains states.
John Keating, president of Cargill Beef says, "Increased feed costs resulting from the prolonged drought, combined with herd liquidations by cattle ranchers, are severely and adversely contributing to the challenging business conditions we face as an industry. Our preference would have been not to idle a plant." Approximately 2,000 people work at the plant, and they will receive company support.

Called 'Digital Engineering in Feed Manufacturing', this unique seminar is free to those working in the area of mill technology and aims at providing background information on intelligent solutions that have been introduced to address processing chain dilemmas. "What's unique for our industry about this event is it's format," says Roger Gilbert, publisher of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine and the chairman of the two-hour seminar. "There will be seven or eight very short presentations made by supply companies that have developed products either using or that use digital technologies to improve the feed manufacturing process. "Following these presentations, speakers will be encouraged to discuss their developments and how they have or will impact feed manufacturing for the benefit of the feed manufacturer and the farmer. That wide-ranging discussion should highlight some important issues about the potential of digital technology for our industry going forward.
