TOPNewsletter - December 2012

Dear valued subscriber/reader

Readers should have received their copies of this year's IMD. Our second mailing is underway with complimentary copies going out to those we feel would benefit from receiving IMD 2012-13. There is no other directory - either in print or online - that is as comprehensive as ours nor readily available 24/7.  And what sets us apart still further is the accuracy of the information we publish. Each listing is checked back with the company prior to publication.

We believe millers and others working in the milling industry want to be kept up-to-date with companies and their products. That's why we tie together the IMD and the Event Register, to show the millers and our readers where they can meet with equipment and service companies offering products internationally, in their country.

IMD, along with it's sister publication GFMT, is co-host of the 1st Global Milling Conference in Chennai, India from February 7-9, 2013 with our partner Assocom-India who publishes that country magazine Wheat Update.

Opportunities exist to take up sponsorship of the event, participate as a speaker on the program and/or attend the event itself to learn about this growing and important market first-hand. See below for details. I look forward to seeing you in Chennai in February!

Mobile App demo version igc logo
If you have not seen the Perendale Application for mobile phones yet, why not try our online demo - straight in your web browser. We have even given you a 'virtual' iPad and iPhone to test it on!

The demo will give you an idea of what the web application does and why every industry professional should have the entire IMD (and more) in their pocket.

The application is free, and can be installed on your mobile by visiting

on your smart phone or tablet.
Nobody does digital in the milling industry better than us!

Sincerely

Tuti Tan

Grain & Feed Milling Technology magazine and
The International Milling Directory are proud co-organisers of

1st GLOBAL MILLING CONFERENCE

There's a new conference on the horizon for millers and the milling industry! It's the 1st Global Milling Conference for milling that covers both food and feed topics. It will be held in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, from February 7-9, 2013.

The organisers are Assocom-India, the publishers of 'Wheat Update' that circulates throughout the sub-continent and Perendale Publishers, the publishers of 'Grain and Feed Milling Technology' magazine which serves millers and those associated with the milling industry around the world. The program outline for the three-day event can be found at: http://assocom-india.com/gmc/index.php

"We are in the process of confirming our speaker line-up and our sponsors," says Mr Raj Kapoor of Assocom. "We are still open to receiving applications for both speakers and sponsors and would welcome all companies and millers with a global interest in our industry coming to this important event. India is a growing market both for our national suppliers and for international companies supplying both equipment and ingredients."

The two organisations are coming together with the aim of creating a meeting place in a major developing country which has easy access from South East Asia, Africa and Europe and is a cost-effective venue. Beginning with a day of registration and a reception, the meeting propoer will focus on food and feed milling issues and will offer a comprehensive range of topics from:

Day Two (Friday, February 8, 2013)

  • Reviewing India's grain production, global supply and demand for feed and for food followed by a key not address by Professor K.V. Thomas, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
  • Food security
  • Feed Safety and Supply
  • Food Safety
  • Feed Milling Developments

Day Three (Saturday, February 9, 2013)

  • Storage and Transportation* New technologies
  • Fee & Food Extrusion
  • Colour sorting and Process Developments
  • Closing keynote address

"India is a unique and diverse country. The common factor is that the milling industry across this country is developing rapidly despite a challenged economy," says Mr Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishers.

"India is proving to be a foil for China and offers companies an opportunity the explore a production system that supplies a 1.22 billion people with their food needs - that's 16% of the world's population," he adds.

India is the fourth largest economy in the world with a GDP of eight percent and while there is a growing middle class, the overall per capita income is still just US$1000. Pundits expect it to rise to the third largest economy by 2035, growing to 60 percent of the size of the American economy by that time.

In addition, India is the world's second largest producer of wheat and rice and surprisingly exports some two million tonnes to Africa, neighouring countries such as Napel and Bangladesh and then further afield to Africa and others. Per ha output of cereals and oilseeds in India continues to climb, yet still ranks between 30-60 percent of the best yields achieved in developing countries.

International visitors and speakers from the USA can expect to pay approximately US$1200 return via Mumbai and should allow a week to make the return journey leaving on February 5 and returning on February 10. Kayak.com is a good source of flight information - while two or three percent more expensive than the cheapest, they have proven reliable in our experience. The conference hotel is: Vivanta by Taj - Connemara Chennai (http://www.vivantabytaj.com/connemara-chennai/overview.html) which is five star hotel and costs Rs.5300/single room (US$94) and Rs.5800/double room (US$106). These rates include breakfast and taxes.Registration fee for international visitors is US$250/person.

A word from the Directory Coordinator

Hello and welcome to the IMD newsletter on what is a bitter winters morning here at IMD HQ in the UK. More editions of IMD21 have been sent out in the past couple of weeks with our storage beginning to look a little bare (we have considered renting the space out to Santa Claus), so be sure to visit www.internationalmilling.com and order yours today.

As you will notice we have had some new additions to our listed companies in IMD this month so I would like to extend to them a warm welcome from all of us here at IMD HQ.

We are still sifting through lots of information and feedback from EuroTier 2012 which, took place in Germany earlier this month. We were delighted to have worked with the organisers there as media-supporter for the event and having met so many of you it has given us all plenty to be optimistic about for 2013. Over the coming weeks you will notice on our blog (millinginternational.com) that we will be posting videos, pictures and other articles that we have accumulated at the show itself so a big thanks to anybody that took part in those.

If you exhibited a product at the show and would like it to be featured on millinginternational.com please feel free to get in touch with any of us here at IMD HQ.

Next up we look forward to meeting you at Isrmax 2012, which takes place in India next month (13th-15th) where we are also serving as media-supporter. You can still book a stand at the show free-of-charge by contacting our International Sales & Marketing Manager, Darren Parris.

Finally it is with a heavy heart that I announce that I am due to leave my position as IMD Coordinator at the end of this month to move closer to my growing family. It has been thoroughly enjoyable getting to know so many of you and upholding the prestigious reputation that the IMD has in serving the global-milling community. Based on the tremendous achievements that we have celebrated this year I am confident for that reputation to go on from strength to strength.

I am pleased that Tom Blacker will be acting as Interim Manager for the IMD until further notice, you can contact him for all things IMD on +44 1242 267700 or by emailing tomb@perendale.co.uk.

Look out for Toms posts on our blog and as I will not be able say so later, enjoy your holiday celebrations!

Alex Rogers

Pneumatic Conveying of Bulk Solids Course

Pneumatic conveying is one of the most commonly used means of transporting bulk solids. Applications range from large scale ship bulk cargo unloaders through to small in-plant systems.

The Wolfson Centre has wide experience of different pneumatic conveying systems and the types of problems that can arise as a result of mismatching materials, feeders, pipe designs, or air movers to one another. The presenters have pooled their vast knowledge and experience in dealing with these problems to deliver a 2 day course, twice a year, which will cover operational and design issues associated with such systems.

Day 3 is a practical session (optional) in their laboratory.

IAOM-KSU Introduction to Flour Milling course

For the fifth time, the IAOM-KSU Introduction to Flour Milling course will be held at the International Grains Program Conference Center at Kansas State University from Jan. 14-18, 2013. Co-sponsored by the International Association of Operative Millers, IGP is excited to continue expanding the opportunities within the annual flour milling curriculum.

This course attracts a broad range of individuals to the program, says Mark Fowler, IGP associate director and milling specialist.

"This course was one of the more diverse in regard to their job responsibilities. We had shift millers, miller assistants, quality assurance managers, general managers, technical service managers," says Fowler. "The common thread for most of these participants is that they are new to the industry. "

Course participants will hear presentations from industry professionals, experience hands-on workshops and a high level of interaction between other participants and the professionals. Fowler along with Dan Wells, milling engineer and adjunct faculty from Salina, Kan., will be teaching most of the course. John Coombs, a second shift miller with Wilkins-Rogers Mills from Martinsburg, W.V. and a graduate of the 2012 course, appreciated the professionalism and the up to date knowledge of the technology that these instructors brought to the table.

"I felt like I have a good handle on the basics, but to work alongside others helping each other is an experience that will help me improve at my own job," Coombs says. "I work primarily with soft wheat in West Virginia, so it was really interesting to learn about hard wheat and to have that experience open up questions and ideas about what our standard for quality is."
