Dear Valued Subscriber
We are just back in the office from exciting EuroTier 2012 last week. We have many things to report below. International Aquafeed gave its full support to the Aquaculture Forum held within EuroTier 2012 with a positive outcome. We reported daily through our blog and social networks on the progress of the aquaculture sessions (and companies related to aquaculture exhibiting at the event) and we were rewarded with learning that several people attend the show in direct response to our news items. I would like to congratulate DLG on it's success of this show, and in particular Dr Birgit Schmidt-Puckhaber, who is DLG's project manager for aquaculture. We are looking forward to working with her at the next EuroTier in 2014.
Our reader should be receiving our latest edition of the IAF next week. If you would like to have a free trial copy please drop me an email. We also have our edition in Spanish available for those who wish to sign up for it!
From January 2013 we will be mailing IAF to readers on the 19th of the month of publication. We will confirm the mailing date with you - if you are a registered reader and we have your mobile or email address - on the day it is mailed. Making sure our magazine is dispatched in a timely way will give readers and advertisers greater confidence in our publication!
Next we are looking forward to promoting our publications in New Delhi, India, at IAI Expo 2012, next moth. If you are attending this show or would like to know more about it please drop me an email. I would welcome any readers to simply come of one of Perendale's Pavilions in the expo hall; we will blog your attendance and observations to our social network followers.
Sincerely
Tuti Tan Circulation and Events Manager International Aquafeed

I know it's only November but here at International Aquafeed we're done and dusted with 2012 and already working looking to towards 2013. The last issue of the year is at the printer and as usual it's an exciting mix of technical articles and comment. My personal highlights include:The expert topic, which focuses on salmon. Davide Pacitti, of the University of Aberdeen on the role of immunonutrition and we also get the lowdown on salmon farming around the world with pieces by associations and experts in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Our cover shot and photo shoot this issue is of the Velella Project in Hawaii. The images for the free-roaming cages project are truly stunning. In addition to gracing the front cover of International Aquafeed, the project has also been voted one of the best inventions of 2012 by Time magazine. Printed copies are making their way to subscribers as we speak and you can view the whole magazine online at www.aquafeed.co.uk |

| FAO director general and EU fisheries minister meet; onshore halibut; Chinese hairy crab
- FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva and Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries discussed key fisheries issues at a meeting last week. Topics on the agenda included joint collaboration on aquaculture policy, management of global fisheries and EU support to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Graziano da Silva stressed the importance of the EU as a global player in fisheries and asked Damanaki for her cooperation to promote global fisheries management and governance. The FAO chief also highlighted the importance of aquaculture as a source of income and food security for small-scale farmers in many areas of the world. He confirmed FAO will participate in the EU high-level conference on aquaculture in Galicia, Spain (European aquaculture: the path for growth), to take place on 23 November 2012. Damanaki stressed the importance of FAO's Committee on Fisheries as the global body of fisheries and aquaculture. She said the EU was fully behind the development of a global record of fishing vessels, an FAO initiative.
- Can you grow Atlantic halibut to market size onshore? Paul Merlin, president of Canaqua Seafoods, Canada, certainly thinks it's possible. Merlin has secured a $496,584 loan from the from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for his project. The money comes on top of Merlin's initial $2.9 million investment and a $1.2-million federal grant in 2010. The site has eight, 15-metre recirculation tanks and is expected to open in March. Let's hope it works.
- Guanghe Aquaculture eyes the Chinese hairy crab market. The company, which specialises in breeds for aquatic species and aquafeed products, has experienced rapid growth over the last decade thanks to its high-end technology. Now chairman, Li Xiaodong wants to expand operations by introducing its own brand of crab products. Crab is a famous delicacy in Shanghai cuisine, which sell for hundreds of yuan for a small one.

Information on hundreds of thousands of salmon in both countries is now being fed into a state-of-the-art database which can make quicker and more exact decisions on pairing individual fish. The process is accelerating genetic advances by producing more robust offspring that grow faster and are less susceptible to disease. Dr Alan Tinch, director of genetics at Landcatch, which has its headquarters in Ormsary in Argyll, said: "We now have the ability to use information in all three programmes to make more accurate decisions on the selection of fish. That's something unique." Dr Tinch said the database effectively acts as a large and complex 'dating agency'. He said: "We are collecting information about the salmon we have on our farms around the world and using it to match the best female with the best male. "In this way the next generation of fish is better in a number of respects than before - faster growing, more disease resistant, with improved fat content and better eating quality.

6th International Algae Congress
Microalgae have been of major interest for producing biofuels in the last decade. Recently, development and focus was changed towards the use of microalgae in the food, feed, materials and chemical sector as well. The potential of micro algae and aquatic biomass is enormous. The developments follow each other in rapid succession.
Microalgae contain high amounts of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, which all can be used for different markets. For biofuels only, microalgae production appears to be too costly but in a biorefinery concept where the different compounds are isolated, algal biofuels remain a feasible option. Worldwide basic research, pilot and demonstration projects are developed. The industry is working on the basic aspects to make commercial production of microalgae possible. Very interesting will be the speech of Dr. Schoondorp, professor new business development at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. She will present a new kind of business model in which money is not the only exchange unit. The art of cooperation is one of the pillars new business is based on. During the 6th International Algae Congress in Rotterdam, many developments in the field are shown by presentations of the larger projects inside and outside Europe. Mr. Olivares, Executive Director of the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts, a consortium of over 30 institutions will inform the delegates about the ambitious projects in USA.
The GreenStars Project has the goal to develop by 2020 compounds of interest such as efficient biofuels and high added value substances with microalgae feeding on industrial emissions of carbon dioxide and nutrients contained in waste. As soon as 2016, GreenStars will have industrial prototypes based on state-of-the-art technologies that will allow building a viable economic and environmental model. Dr. Siaut, member of the Biocore project team is speaker at the Rotterdam congress.

Aquaculture 2013 - programme announced
We have just had a sneaky peek at the programme for Aquaculture 2013 in Nashville, USA, February 21-25, 2013. Shrimp will play a huge role with a host of sessions including nutrition, production and disease and health.
As well as species sessions there will also be contributed sessions dedicated to current trends and management. I'm already looking forward learning more about urban aquaculture and harmful algal blooms.
I am also pretty excited about some of the more unusual topics such as zebrafish, frogs and eels.
