Dear Valued Subscriber
BIOMARINE BUSINESS CONVENTION As co-organisor of the BioMarine Business Convention 2012, we would like to take this opportunity to thank delegates, sponsors and moderators who participated in last week's event in London. Our team at International Aquafeed is proud to share this success with subscribers and readers. But first we must thank Aquafeed's editor Professor Simon Davies, who not only secured the Fishmongers Hall venue but also arranged the Closing Reception at the Houses of Parliament. Our thanks also go to MP Douglas Carswell who through Professor Davies undertook to support the aims and objectives of the Convention.
As we are part of the 'BioMarine big family' we will continue to play our part on publishing the BioMarine Directory (http://www.biomarine-resources.com/) and its blog (http://biomarine-resources.blogspot.co.uk/).
The BioMarine Resources Directory will provide links throughout the biomarine industry on who's who in marine products, services and support. We are eager to make this a comprehensive resources both by product/service and by company. The Directory exists in both print and digital versions (with its own website as well as a BioMarine Resources application for smart phones and tablets).
We will also be publishing the outcomes of the London meeting in the next edition of International Aquafeed.
The next BioMarine Convention will be held in Halifax, Canada from September 9-12, 2013.
SHOWS-EXHIBITIONS-CONFERENCES Shows, exhibitions and conferences! It's getting busy in our industry in the run-up to the end of the year. BioMarine 2012 is over; and what a great success it was for those who participated. Now we turn our attention to Hannover, Germany and Eurotier (which takes place in just two weeks from November 13-16, 2012). This is a top event for all of us in agriculture and aquaculture. In fact the aquaculture section is growing steadily and this year will be the best yet. Overall Eurotier is hosting over 2300 exhibitors! Don't forget to visit us at 23C04. A month later (December 13-15, 2012) is the Isrmax and IAI AquaCulture Expo 2012 in New Delhi, India. This events is a global exhibition and conference on the aquaculture and fishing industry. IAI AquaCulture Expo invites exhibitors from all over the world to launch, exhibit and promote new products and services from aquaculture and the fishing industry. Again we will be there with a Perendale Pavilion distributing our magazine and other materials. Please visit us!

Thoughts from the Aquafeed Team
 | Alice Neal |
Hello, from the International Aquafeed editorial desk. It has been a busy couple of weeks here at International Aquafeed so let me fill you in on what we've been up to: I am delighted to announce that we have added Tom Blacker to our team at Perendale Publishers Limited. Tom joins us from an events and conference organisation based in London and also has a degree in English Literature. He will work across various departments, providing invaluable support to our existing team. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Tom and I look forward to working with him towards our future success here at Perendale. This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Conley about Aquaculture without FrontiersIt was inspiring to learn about an organisation that works to hard to develop aquaculture on a practical level. We spoke a about a myriad of topics including corporate social responsibility and portable aquaculture projects. Look out for the interview in the next issue of the magazine. Although autumn is only just upon us, we are already looking forward to 2013. International Aquafeed editor, Professor Simon J Davies and the team have put together what we think is a really exiting, informative and relevant editorial line-up for next year. We already have some fantastic writers working on articles for the first issue and I am really looking forward to reading the pieces. |

| Marine Harvest Q3 earnings; Fukushima fish; BioMarine Business Convention
- The Marine Harvest Group achieved before tax and interest earnings of NOK 73 million in the third quarter of 2012, compared to NOK 457 million in the corresponding quarter of 2011. The results were impacted by weak market prices and a lower benefit from sales contracts compared to previous quarters. Cash flow from operations was NOK 237 million in the quarter compared to NOK 269 million in the same period in 2011. "The results for the third quarter were negatively impacted by low market prices and limited benefit from the sales contract portfolio compared to previous quarters. I am pleased by the organization's ability to deliver on costs, particularly in Norway. We are struggling in Chile and Canada due to the exceptional low market prices in the Americas. We are continuing to benefit from the cash flow measures implemented last year, and our balance sheet is therefore very strong," says Alf-Helge Aarskog, CEO. The company also reported a harvest volume increase of 12 percent to 93,229 tons from 83.076 tons in the third quarter of 2011. More information...
- More than 18 months after the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, fish in the area still contain traces of radioactivity. A new study has found that fish near the plant are still being exposed to new sources of cesium, possibly from the seafloor or from contaminated groundwater that's flowing into the ocean. Fortunately, most fish sampled had levels of cesium below safe limits for consumption, though some contained surprisingly large amounts. Read more...
- Several of the International Aquafeed team were at the BioMarine Business Convention in London this week. They had an exciting and fruitful time and were proud to launch the the BioMarine Resources Directory. Look out for a full report soon.

An overview of the UK fish vaccination industry I am sure everyone involved in any fish vaccination would really rather prefer that they didn't have to vaccinate. It is an expensive, time consuming, hazardous and stressful process. So why do we vaccinate fish?
Yeast in aquaculture Yeast products are becoming more and more popular in aquaculture. However many products (as a whole or as fractions) are on the aquaculture market at the moment and differentiating between one from another can be difficult. This small article aims at casting some light on the subject and explaining that all yeasts not are equal.
Extrusion technology for the production of micro-aquatic feeds and shrimp feeds Nowadays we often hear startling news such as, 'seven billionth baby born' or 'world population may reach 9.2 billion by 2050' (world news, msnbc.com). Hunger is the world's number one health risk, it kills more people than AIDS every year, one in seven people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight
Why check selenomethionine levels in selenium yeast? Selenium yeast is commonly used in aquaculture to improve animal performance and meat quality. Samples of different selenised yeast products were sourced in the EU and USA. QA departments of Trouw Nutrition International and Selko Feed Additives performed a laboratory analysis on these. Outcomes revealed remarkable differences between product samples on most effective and active compound, namely selenomethionine (SeMet).

6th International Algae Congress - Present and potential industrial applications
Microalgae have been of major interest for producing biofuels in the last decade. Recently, development and focus was changed towards the use of microalgae in the food, feed, materials and chemical sector as well. Microalgae contain high amounts of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, which all can be used for different markets. For biofuels only microalgae production appears to be too costly but in a biorefinery concept where the different compounds are isolated, algal biofuels remain a feasible option.
Worldwide basic research, pilot and demonstration projects were developed. We are working on the basic aspects to make commercial production of microalgae possible. In this conference we will report on the developments in the field by presentations of the larger projects inside and outside Europe. We will discuss basic research questions as well as demonstration projects. We will look at scalability and sustainability of the process of algae production and refinery.
