HelenMeet Helen

Helen graduated from Canada's first two-year Tellington-Touch Companion Animal Certification Program in 2000. She has since attained the title of Guild Certified Senior Practitioner (Level 3) and is also a Dog Powered Sports Instructor and  Therapy Dog Evaluator.

What she says about herself:

"Animals have always been a huge part of my life. I was fortunate my parents understood my passion, and allowed me to bring home pretty well any animal that crossed my path to add to our dog, cat, and bunny family. It did get a little difficult when a lamb followed by a horse entered the equation - we did not live on a farm! As I grew older, and life and reality set in, I managed to limit myself to one or two (ok, sometimes three) dogs, and a cat.

"In 1994, I rescued Misty, a great Pyrenees with more issues than I could handle by myself. In 1996, I attended my first TTouch workshop, and the difference it made for our relationship was so incredible, I never looked back. Misty and TTouch changed my life to what it is today!

"Along with my TTouch work, I am also regional Evaluator for Therapeutic Paws of Canada, an organization providing visiting teams to seniors' homes, hospitals, libraries, as well as a 'Paws to Read' program.

"I live in the beautiful Gatineau Hills, just across the river from Ottawa, ON. where we enjoy snowshoeing and skiing in winter, and paddling and hiking in the summer. Since my husband and I became 'empty nesters', we decided to try something new - yes, learn rather than teach! So we took up Dragonboat racing - we compete in Quebec, Ontario, and the US with a couple of amazing teams. This July we are headed to Welland, ON to compete in the Canadian National Championships - hopefully we'll bring back some 'bling' to add to our medal collection!

"I look forward to meeting you at one of the workshops!"

descripWorkshop descriptions and costs

Both workshops are appropriate for those wanting skills to help their own animals, and for those already working professionally with animals. Dog trainers and behaviourists may earn CCPDT CEU's by attending either workshop.

Attendance at a three-day introductory workshop counts
towards certification in the Practitioner Training Program. Students attending two such workshops will be considered to have completed the first  (introductory) session of the six trainings required for certification.

Attendance at the weekend workshop gives a credit of $100 towards an introductory 6-day TTouch training taken within one year.

What to expect...

The weekend workshop will cover the principles and basic skills of hands-on and movement work. We will put these TTouch techniques into practice in addressing the specific needs of the dogs that are present, which may include reactivity, barking, fearfulness, inappropriate behaviours, apparent inability to learn, etc..

On the second day we will add another layer of precision and detail to the skills and information. We will also observe and hear how the work of the previous day might have influenced the dogs, and explore what further work would be appropriate.

The third day will be spent clarifying and confirming the skills that were learned on the weekend and adding others - those that were not covered on the weekend, and others considered more advanced. The intention is that you will leave with a solid understanding of the basic techniques of TTouch, and and idea of when and how to apply them.

It is not required that you bring a dog. If you would like help with your dog, do bring him or her.  If you come alone you will learn just as much - and can take TTouch skills back to animals you chose to leave at home. Contact Helen if you have questions about the curriculum or if you are concerned about whether or not you should bring your dog.

Costs:
Weekend workshop: $275.00, early bird price $250.00.

Participants at TTouch workshops speak of seeing with new eyes, developing new insights into how animals learn, discovering more successful ways of

coping with difficulties, and - best of all - coming away knowing that they can make a difference in the lives of animals.
