Monthly Luncheon: Tuesday, April 19
|
AT GARDEN OF THE GODS Club & Resort - on April 19 - the SCWCC Monthly Business Luncheon welcomes Margaret Sabin, President and CEO of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, who will share her thoughts on "Finding and Nurturing Your Passion."
With the busy lives we all lead, it can be hard to make the choices that lead to better health. Finding time to exercise, making the effort to prepare a healthy meal, or getting enough sleep can all be a challenge. The key to making those healthy choices is knowing your "why." The only way anyone will be successful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to have a reason - something that really means a lot - to motivate them from within. Margaret will discuss "finding your why" and then provide insight in how to maintain your body, mind and spirit in a way that you can nurture your passion and continue to do all of the things you love and that add meaning to your life. She will also briefly discuss her vision for healthcare in our community and take a few questions.
After April 14: All late registrations / walk-ins $45

And Bring a Children's BOOK to Lunch, too!
|
Support the EPIC Book Drive ... Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC) has joined forces with Lt. Governor Garcia and a coalition of partners to lead a statewide book drive for children from birth to eight years old. The goal is to create public awareness of the importance of summer reading with an adult.
Locally, Shannon Gast has offered to coordinate a pickup of any children's books brought to this month's luncheon ... so let's all pitch in to donate plenty of books for her to collect!
Long-time SCWCC members have signed on to support the Colorado Business Reads effort, including Cascade Investment Group, Colorado Springs Health Partners, Colorado Springs Utilities and United Way.
Statewide, the business community is being asked to participate by encouraging the donation of new and "gently used" books that will be distributed to children through schools, libraries, doctors' offices and child care centers. Promoting adult/child interactive reading can be as important as providing the books themselves, so businesses are also urged to share Information with employees about simple ways to enhance the adult/child reading experience.
Added research indicates that investing early is good business. The "Heckman Equation" demonstrates that an investment made before a child is three years old produces a far better return than later job training efforts.

Public Policy Council supports Fix the Glitch
|
The SCWCC Public Policy Council was recently briefed on details surrounding the Hospital Provider Fee, and recommended that the Women's Chamber add its name to that of over 100 supporters of FixTheGlitch.org.
At issue? When State legislators created the Hospital Provider Fee (HPF) in 2009, matched with federal Medicaid funds, it was intended that its proceeds could be used to expand health care access. But the fee itself should have been designated an enterprise from the outset - just like lottery funds and tuition to state schools that don't (and were never intended to) count in the TABOR refund calculation.
Since then, the HPF has been factored into the general budget, and its revenue is now forcing the state to refund money that would otherwise be allocated toward improving our roads, maintaining safe bridges, and improving education for our children. Bi-partisan support among Colorado leaders favors a simple correction, and the Public Policy Council urges SCWCC members to become familiar with the issue and the proposed solution. Contact Public Policy Council Chair, Carrie Iverson, to learn more.

Several new top-level memberships were recently added to the roster, including corporate partnerships with the Colorado Springs Conservatory and the Space Foundation. A press release by the Space Foundation details the agreement, along with a photo of the principals, SCWCC Executive Director Lola Woloch and Space Foundation CEO Shelli Brunswick. Also new at the business level is Cascade Investment Group (Jan Weiland), Community Partnership for Child Development (Noreen Landis-Tyson), The Smile Generation (Gemma Delgaudio) and The Springs Funeral Services (Robin Patterson). With thanks to committee-regular Stephanie Howard, the Doubletree by Hilton also renewed its business membership in this cycle, after being acquired in January by an affiliate of GF Management, a leading national hotel ownership and management company that specializes in hotels, resorts, golf courses and other hospitality assets. As reported by GlobeNewswire, GF Management has pledged $7 million in renovations to the southside property. Also new at the company level is JetEx, Inc. (Kristine Simon). Renewals from Kimberlite Coaching (Arlene Moss) and long-time supporter Pikes Peak Library District (Terry Zarsky) kept both active members on the roster.
