Greetings!
Welcome to our March newsletter. As we continue the season of Lent we reflect on the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We pray that as you read this month's newsletter you are encouraged to live a more abundant life in Christ. |

From the Bishop
Season of Reflection,
Contemplation & Repentance
Winter has definitely made its presence known. The back-to-back snow and ice storms in our region have forced all of us to slow down whether we wanted to or not as school and work closures and delays forced everyone to spend more time indoors. Shoveling snow and salting driveways has almost become the new American past time, at least here in the DMV. I am sure we are all looking forward to Spring along with the warmer weather and new life it will bring.
Hopefully some of the recent interruption of our daily routine has given us time for reflection. We are in the season of Lent and Lent really is all about reflecting on all that Jesus Christ has done for us. It is a time of contemplation, a time of repentance and time for renewal of our commitment to Kingdom principles and living according to God's agenda, not our own. Living according to the agenda of God's Kingdom means that we are living life abundantly in all areas of our lives. This is why it is so important for us to understand the word of God, apply it to our lives and share it with others.
We have been intentionally preaching and teaching messages that will help you live your best life in all areas, physical, emotional, spiritual and even financial. At TNT on Tuesday evenings we have been learning all about the Kingdom Agenda. The lessons have been empowering. On Sunday's I have been preaching about moving beyond emotional pain from our past so that we can live with joy in our present and have hope for our future. We must learn to "get past the things that we may never get over" so we can have the things that we never thought we could.
This past week, I started a series on generosity. As we become healthy and whole we must also remember our brothers and sisters and do all we can to strengthen them along the way. God expects us to be generous with our time, our talents and our treasure and to use all three to advance His Kingdom by generously sharing with others. As we continue in this series we look forward with great anticipation to Resurrection Sunday when we will talk about the most generous act of all time, the giving of Jesus Christ for the world. What an awesome gift.
Please remember to support The Life through your giving. Even though we missed a few Bible Studies and worship services due to inclement, ministry must go on. We cannot allow snow and ice to hinder the great work that we do through this ministry. Your faithfulness in giving allows ministry to continue to flow. You can give online at www.thelifedc.org .
I pray the Lord bless each of you for your love and commitment to the work of Christ!

HEALTH MINISTRY
Why Does the Heart Matter
March Health Ministry Session
The human heart is a vital organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to all other organs and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. Heart disease is a simple term used to describe several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.Among African Americans age 20 and older, 44.4% of men and 48.9% of women have heart disease. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease.Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease.
Your heart also matters because the issues of life-our actions, works, pursuits, etc.-all proceed from the heart. (Prov. 4:23) The thoughts of your heart define your reality. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. (Prov. 23:7) God is so deeply concerned about the inner man or the condition of the heart. " ...for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) And finally, our walk with God is always a matter of the heart. Salvation begins in the heart. "For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10)
Preventing Heart Disease
One way to prevent heart disease is to improve your diet. Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. In fact, an analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease and cancer, as well as a reduced incidence of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends the Mediterranean diet as an eating plan that can help promote health and prevent disease. The Mediterranean diet is one your whole family can follow for good health.
The Life's 40 day fast is based on a Mediterranean diet. To assist you in your meal planning, below are some recipe links for a Mediterranean eating plan.
