Holiday Outreach
The holiday season is upon us! Last year with your help, we were able to provide groceries and turkeys to over 100 families for Thanksgiving!
Our goal this holiday season is to feed 250 families but we need your help.
Until November 15th, the RLCDC offices will be collecting non-perishable food items and turkeys for distribution to the community on Saturday November 17th.
Please see the RLCDC representatives in the lobby for a holiday tag listing the grocery items needed or to volunteer to help distribute food.
Monetary donations can be made at www.RLCDC.org.
If you are in need of assistance the deadline is November 10th. Please see a representative in the lobby or download the application online at www.RLCDC.org

From the Bishop

An Attitude of Gratitude
Have you ever noticed that when you were young time seemed to pass so slowly, but now that we are more advanced in years it seems that time is flying by? A couple of years ago we were buying school clothes for our children and now we are making retirement plans. Oh My God how time flies.
As we move into the last days of the year 2012, we face what I believe to be one of, if not the most important presidential elections in our lifetime. This election has polarized the nation, splitting friends, neighbors, churches and families over issues. In the last few days the destruction and devastation of Superstorm Sandy has reminded us how life can change in an instant. I believe we need to stop for a moment put our computers, laptops, iPhones and devices down and reflect on all the things that we have come through in our lives. All of us regardless of our age, wealth, status, race, or parents have something to be grateful for over our lives.
I want to make November the Month of Gratitude. I want to challenge each of you to a twenty-one day fast of NO COMPLAINING! From November 1st through the 21st, you will commit to not complain about ANYTHING. That means if you're on I-95 and someone cuts in front of you, traffic is backed up for miles, and your children do the very things you asked them not to do, or even your spouse forgets your birthday, you will NOT complain.
Then I am asking each one of you to fill in the blanks on the following and send it back to me on email or Facebook or hand deliver to administrative offices. "I Am So Grateful ________________________________."
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
Bishop Eugene Reeves

Unstoppable Youth
Importance of Academic Achievement
Elder Rene'e A. Johnson

Last month we discussed the importance of academic achievement. Here are some additional tips to help your child succeed in school:
Encourage Your Child to Read: Helping your child become a reader is the single most important thing that you can do to help the child to succeed in school-and in life. The importance of reading simply can't be overstated. Reading helps children in all school subjects. More important, it is the key to lifelong learning.
Talk with Your Child: Talking and listening play major roles in children's school success. It's through hearing parents and family members talk and through responding to that talk that young children begin to pick up the language skills they will need to do well.
Monitor Homework: Don't just assume it has been done because your child said so. Let your child know that you think education is important and so homework has to be done. Have a special place for your child to study; set a regular time; remove distractions and show interest (even if you are not familiar with the subject).
Monitor TV Viewing and Video Game Playing: Whether we want to accept it or not, our children spend more time watching TV or playing video games than they do completing homework or other school-related activities. We need to limit the amount of time that our children watch TV; model good TV viewing habits ourselves; watch TV with your child and talk to them about what you see/ask questions.
Help your child learn to use the internet properly and effectively. Spend time online with your child and pay attention to every site they visit.
Encourage your child to be responsible and to work independently.
Respond quickly if your child needs additional help in a subject. Seek tutoring and assistance from all available sources.
Instruct your child in self-control, anger management and problem solving. Give him/her multiple opportunities to practice and provide feedback on his/her progress.

Family Life
Can We Talk?
Sister Tonya Blocker-Crosby
Today we live in a society where electronic devices become dated and obsolete in a matter of days. So many are seeking the next version of feature filled cell phones. There is even a new health concern being referred to as "texting teen tendinitis". This is a result of kids' thumbs numbing from excessive daily texting.
In the past, children would be chased off the telephone by their parents. Can you believe it, children used to actually engage in ongoing dialogue? Now, some parents have also caught the texting bug and will even text their child instead of picking up the telephone to speak with them. The excuse may be, 'I'm in a meeting and can't speak right now' or 'I'm standing in line and can't talk'.
But, where have we come as a people when we are sitting in church texting them or even in the same house with them - maybe they're upstairs and you're down. This is really sad and we are blindly allowing the enemy to trick us into accepting modern day (so-called) necessities to perverse the essence of family. [1 Timothy 3:4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.]
Families must get back to open dialogue and not get caught up in the habits of the world. We live in it, but we are not of it. [Roman 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.]Let's get back to talking with our children. Put down the cell phone or just use it for necessary conveniences and emergencies. No more "ttyl" (talk to you later) or "lol" (laughing out loud). Let's go back to "tol" (talking out loud). Proverbs 25:11 A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

Education For Life
Knowing the Promises of God
Pastor Matrica Ware

Once again, my favorite time of the year is making its appearance, the changing of the leaves, the change in the atmosphere, turning back the clock for one extra hour of sleep, and preparing for upcoming holidays with family.
As we celebrate the upcoming holidays, let us continue to have our focus on the Kingdom of God and all that He has made available to us. We can truly celebrate with a grateful heart to our King who has "given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue," 2 Peter 1:3.
As children of God, it is absolutely necessary that we understand what God has promised to us as His children. During the fourth quarter of 2012, the Education Ministry has presented a series entitled "Living under the Shelter of God's Blessings". This has been an awesome teaching. I hope you had an opportunity to be a part of it during Tuesday night Bible Study. This series leads us into our 2013 series entitled "Prosperity God's Way".
We must have firmly planted in our hearts that God's desire is to bless us. He has given us numerous promises regarding blessings that He has provided for us. This was the focus of this 4th quarter teaching. Our series for 2013 will focus on how to prosper in these blessings God's way. This promises to be an insightful and rewarding teaching. We look forward to seeing each of you on Tuesday nights during Bible Study.
We have also started New Members' and Life Empowerment classes on Sunday mornings from 8:30am to 9:30am. We recognized that with the busy lives we lead that it was sometimes not possible for the majority of you to attend classes during the week. So we moved these classes to Sunday mornings to give the entire congregation an opportunity to receive Biblical instruction without having to add another night to your busy schedules to travel to the church. Our next training starts November 25th. We hope to see you taking advantage of these classes.
Prepare your hearts for 2013 to join in the classes being taught here at The Life. If you have any questions, please contact us at education@thelifedc.org.
