Good morning,
I would be remiss if I did not say something about this tragedy that unfolded at the finish line of what some may call the pinnacle of racing..The Boston Marathon.
We joke about running in races with thousands of friends, but it really is true. In a large part, the running community is made up of thousands upon thousands of friends who don't know each other yet, but as soon as we recognize a race shirt or backpack in the airport or grocery store, we strike up a conversation and we know how kindred our spirits really are. This is why what happened on Monday hurt so much. Whether we have or will ever qualify for Boston or not, whether we have run Boston or not, whether we have even run a marathon/half marathon/any race or not, we are all runners, and a part of us soars whenever we see our brothers and sisters fly down the finish line of any marathon. Always that flight should be in joy, (as it should at any finish line),but Monday afternoon, it was so much different. Of the thousands of people that were out there making Monday an awesome experience, sadly there was someone(s?) choosing to make it awful. All of us in the running community mourn this attack on our peaceful sport, and our thoughts and prayers are with those who suffer.
We believe, and we hope you do as well, that there is more good than bad in this world. There will be many opportunities in the days ahead to remember, honor and serve the folks involved with this incident. (Thank you to those who ran or walked with us last night to show strength and solidarity!) We will communicate these opportunities to you as the details are worked out, but in the meantime, there is nothing stopping each of us from seeking opportunities and interactions in our day to day lives to make our lives and those of others better, lighter, happier.
If there is anything positive that has come out of this awful event, it is that we are once again reminded how lucky we are to be a part of such an amazing community - in the runners themselves, the people that they surround themselves with and the people who step up to volunteer and make these events as great as they are. The help, generosity, selflessness and heroism that was shown on April 15th and after, is just a testament that good really does exist in such dark moments.
The running community is a resilient bunch of people. They know how to fight when things get tough and they know how to persevere when so much is standing against them. They are generous and helpful and gracious. They also have generous and helpful and gracious people who support them every day. Run on ....
