A message from your Executive Director
Dear Ignite Family (Volunteers, Staff, Students and Donors)
Hello Ignite!
Well, we're launched for our 40th season at Eldora. Thank you all so much for volunteering. I'm so happy to see so many familiar faces and happier still to see lots of new ones. Welcome to all the new Ignite volunteers. I hope you're all having fun. Those of you who have been on the slopes with real students are no doubt realizing what we were doing in the training clinics.
- Name tags for Jackets will be distributed this weekend. If you need a white pin name tag, contact the Admin Desk next time you're up here and they'll make one for you. If you don't see your Jacket tag in the pile, please sign up at the Admin desk and I'll have them next week. I'm sure I've left people out. That's a mistake, not a slight.
- Please read the Staff Manual linked to your online profile page and check the box after you've read it. This applies to everyone.
- Please review your online profile and complete it. We need complete profiles from all volunteers. That means addresses, telephone numbers, and an emergency contact. Many, many profiles are incomplete.
- We are ambassadors for Eldora Mountain Resort and we operate here at their pleasure. Please be courteous to all Eldora staff at all times. Any issues should be directed to your day Supervisor.
- Congratulations to Diane Sowerby who earned her PSIA Alpine Level I last week! Anyone wishing to take PSIA exams should talk to John Humbrecht. Ignite pays for all exams you pass.
- Special Olympics is on February 9th at Eldora. If you want to participate in this fun event please contact John Humbrecht. (snowsports@igniteadaptivesports.org)
- Please make schedule changes online on your profile page. If you need to make a change within 48 hours of your teaching day contact Jacque, our scheduler, at scheduler@igniteadaptivesports.org. Do not leave messages on the machine and do not email me...please.
- Returning Instructors: Please update your PSIA status if applicable on your profile page.
Keep up the good work everybody. See you on the hill.
Thank you all!

Meet a Student
Luke Ranniger 8th season with Ignite
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
If you could have any animal or creature as a pet, what would you pick? dog (specifically, "guard dog", which is what we do have, a Doberman). Even though I told Luke he could pick ANY animal, he still stuck with our own dog, Ellie.
What is your favorite summer activity?
going to Strawberry Park Hot Springs (Steamboat Springs) "with my mom" (isn't he the sweetest kid ever!)
Where did you go on your last trip or vacation?
Steamboat Springs, CO
If you came across a jukebox, which song/musician would you play?
"Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake
What is something that you always carry with you?
backpack (not really, but I guess that is what he is feeling as a freshman in high school)
Would you rather play a game, read a book or watch a movie?
game (he LOVES to play Capture the Flag but didn't mention this specifically)
What is your favorite part of the day when you come up to Eldora?
"Finding the instructor who wants to ski with me."

Meet a Volunteer
Annette Kissinger
7th season with Ignite teaching alpine skiing
Why do you volunteer?
1) It's a great way to give back and express gratitude to all the people who have encouraged my daughter to fully participate in sports.
2) Seven years ago, I had just moved to Boulder and was guiding my daughter down the slopes at Eldora while wearing our "blind skier/blind guide" vests. An Ignite volunteer (John Anderson) stopped me and asked "What are you doing on Fridays? We need you!" That's how I first got involved.
3) Joining the Ignite volunteer team was a great way to meet fascinating and adventuresome people in my new home of Boulder. I've made some terrific friends while volunteering.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be?
I've always had an affinity for WonderWoman - but that might just be admiration for how well she wears her costume!
In high school you would most likely find me:
As a social butterfly, flitting between the jocks, brains, stoners, and student council members.
Where is your favorite place to be while at Eldora?
Witnessing a student's first ride up the magic carpet and their first run down the beginner trail.
Describe yourself in one word.
Energetic or Compassionate
If your life story was made into a movie, what would the title be and which actor would play you?
How do you spend your weekends during the off-season?
Bicycling with my husband or my bike team, running the trails with our dog, hiking Sanitas or Chatauqua, or hauling my teenage kids up a mountain for a hut trip.
Describe your favorite moment or experience while volunteering with Ignite.
I was working with a boy with autism who did not communicate with words. It took quite a while to get him comfortable on skis and we discovered that singing nursery rhymes would give him the courage to take the magic carpet. I sang many rounds of "The Wheels on the Bus" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". His school teacher waited at the bottom while I tethered him down the slope and realized the high pitched noises he made were sounds of joy as he floated over the snow down the hill. His teacher said it was a rare occasion for him to smile and he was grinning ear to ear.
Another favorite:
I was assigned to a woman from Texas who was in school at the CO Center for the Blind. She was totally blind and had never seen, let alone touched snow before. A true "newbie". We started on a standard alpine lesson progression when she leaned over and whispered in my ear: "Do you know what snow angels are?" We walked to a quiet place in the woods and proceeded to happily make snow angels. She was amazed to feel the snow and the impressions that our bodies molded into it. What a pleasure to witness a grown woman experiencing pure joy in nature.

Meet a New Board Member
Art Heimbach
1st year Board member
Why do you volunteer?
I like helping out with things related to skiing and people with TBIs.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be?
Super Chicken
In high school you would most likely find me:
In high school. :-p
Where is your favorite place to be while at Eldora? Far west ridge. Describe yourself in one word.
Complicated. If your life story was made into a movie, what would the title be and which actor would play you?
The Never Ending Search; the weird white dog-dragon from The Never Ending Story
How do you spend your weekends during the off-season?
Frisbee, tennis, hiking, in-line skating, biking
Describe your favorite moment or experience while
volunteering with Ignite.
Whenever my contributions to the Board result in a benefit for the organization.
