Thriving @ 75, Parkchester Celebrates Its Diamond Anniversary on August 8
|
Parkchester has reached a remarkable milestone - 75 years as the premier community of the Bronx, and as one of the best places to live in New York City. Please celebrate with your neighbors on August 8th from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with a whole series of festivities including food, giveaways, raffles, games, live music and DJs, taking place at the Oval (starting at 11 a.m.), and the North Ball Field and Pine Drive (starting at noon).
To kick off the start of the festivities, and to engage the talents of our next generation of residents, the 75th Anniversary logo was created by the winner of a contest for the best logo sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Parkchester.
Keep your eye out for special e-blasts, building posters, and banners on the lampposts announcing events and activities as they are finalized.

New Stars at the Bronx Zoo
|
| Velcro, the giant anteater |

The Children's Zoo, a section of the Bronx Zoo, recently reopened after a $4 million renovation that took more than a year with lots of interesting new animals including a giant anteater named Velcro. At 120 pounds, with a long, narrow snout and the sticky tongue that earned her name, Velcro is one of many new stars in interactive exhibits. There's a Monkey Island, a man-made oasis in the middle of a marsh with hollowed-out, artificial oak trunks that are heated to provide year-round shelter for 11 squirrel monkeys and a rebuilt farm area where children can feed and pet animals.
The idea of the zoo founded in 1941 was to make animal lovers out of city children. For many youngsters this is the first such contact with fur and feathers that a great many city children get. You can bring your child to the zoo to spend some quality time with the animals through October: weekdays from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm; weekends & holidays from 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM.

Historian Lloyd Ultan, A Bronx Institution
|
| Lloyd Ultan giving a tour. |

Lloyd Ultan, 77, born and raised in the Bronx, has served as the official borough historian since 1996 and has become, to many, as synonymous with the Bronx as the landmarks and institutions that he knows by heart. A history professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, Mr. Ultan has made a second career of documenting the borough's past. Mr. Ultan was appointed the Bronx historian by Fernando Ferrer, then the borough president, and is the fourth person to hold the unpaid position.
Mr. Ultan grew up near the Grand Concourse, a short walk from Yankee Stadium and currently lives in an apartment just south of Van Cortlandt Park. He graduated from Hunter College's Bronx campus (today Lehman College) and earned a master's degree in American history from Columbia University.
Now Mr. Ultan and Shelley Olson have written a book: "The Bronx: The Ultimate Guide to New York City's Beautiful Borough." It covers major tourist attractions like the zoo and the New York Botanical Garden as well as lesser-known sites like the cottage that was Edgar Allan Poe's last home and the Hall of Fame for Great Americans on the campus of Bronx Community College. It also includes walking tours of neighborhoods from City Island to Mott Haven.
