No one is really a lost cause if they do not want to be. Here are five steps to becoming more coachable:
- Have Humility: Accept that you cannot do everything on your own and that others have knowledge, experience, and skills that you can tap to learn and grow.
- Surrender Control: Real change happens when you venture into the unknown. Consciously letting go of "I can't do this" thoughts can allow for great things to happen.
- Be Action-biased: You have to "do," not just "think."
- Have Pure Purpose: Selfish motivations hinder growth. Your goals should help the department and organization, not simply focus on a raise or promotion.
- Have Faith: Hindsight is always 20/20. You may not notice positive change occurring through coaching until you realize that you have unconsciously incorporated a new behavior.
