rectorFrom the Rector: Why St. James?

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Romans 15:5-7

As part of our stewardship season, the Stewardship Commission has asked St. James parishioners to share with the congregation what St. James means to them. In essence, "Why St. James?" For the past few weeks, parishioners have shared their personal experience of St. James in writing and last Sunday Jody Thompson shared her own story in person from the pulpit.  In the next few weeks, you will be reading additional personal stories from St. James parishioners about what St. James means to them.

I would like to share with you my own story of why I came to St. James.

When I was preparing to leave my position as Assistant Priest for Children and Family Ministry at All Saints Church in Winter Park, Florida, I had a number of options before me. I had served in the Diocese of El Camino Real in California, one of the most liberal dioceses in the Church, and in the Diocese of Central Florida, one of the most conservative dioceses in the Church. One thing that I learned serving in both extremes of the Church was the sincerity of belief held by each side and the suspicion that each side had for the other. It struck me that neither side knew how to talk to the other side and that led to certain predictable outcomes that were unnecessary and unfortunate.

As I interviewed with churches across the country, this experience was always in the back of my mind. The way that individuals on search committees spoke, what they valued, the picture that their parish profile painted, all these elements said something about their community, but it was always an incomplete picture.

What completed the picture was actually meeting the people. When I met the members of the St. James search committee that came to visit me in Winter Park, there was an ease of relationship and a friendliness among the members of the visiting committee that had been missing from other communities I had experienced. Our time together was blessed and our conversations began to reveal to me the heart of St. James. When I came to Greenville to interview at St. James, I learned that my experience with the visiting committee was not an aberration. Rather, the more people I met, the more I began to understand that the people of St. James were actually as they described themselves in their materials, a true rarity in a search process! It was the earnestness, the caring nature, the diversity and the collegiality of the people of St. James that led me to the decision to accept the call to St. James when it was extended. St. James was a family, and I wanted to be a part of it.

St. James is truly a family that shares a Christian love for one another. We come from all walks of life. Some of us are single, others are partnered or married. We welcome traditional, non-traditional, and interfaith families equally in our congregation.

Some of us were raised in the Episcopal Church but most of us were raised in another faith tradition: Roman Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, and many others. However, we have all come to call St. James home and each other family. St. James is the kind of place that welcomes all who come seeking a deeper knowledge of God just as we were once welcomed.

At St. James questions are encouraged as we explore what we believe and why we believe it in community. We span the entire political and theological spectrum and we treat each other as children of God worthy of dignity and respect. While we have a rich diversity and various perspectives on many issues, we still come together as one family gathered around one table: to be and to receive the Body of Christ. We do not enforce political, intellectual or theological conformity: rather, we give thanks for God's gift of Christian unity in spite of our differences.

And what is it that unifies us? Our love for God, our love for the Church, our love for one another, and our love for our neighbors.

These are the reasons that I chose St. James. I found a place where the Kingdom of God is breaking in, a community that lives as it believes and exemplifies the best hope for the future of the Church and the world.

Playing Music with Friends - A Call for Student Instrumentalists

Students who play in school orchestra or band, or who take private guitar or piano lessons, are invited to play their instruments on Christmas Eve (as well as for Sunday or other special services). Student instrumentalists enjoy preparing special music to share in worship, either as soloists or in small groups. In the next couple of weeks I will be organizing the student music for Christmas Eve; now is the time for students and parents to contact me with your information. As soon as I know you want to participate, I will choose your music (with input from your music teacher if you like).

There is a planning meeting this Sunday, Nov. 6 after the 11 a.m. church service. No need to bring your instrument that day, but please bring calendars in order to schedule rehearsals through November and into December. Having several rehearsals benefits young performers by increasing their confidence and enjoyment in making music. I, along with my helpers, teach and lead the rehearsals. Parents, please send me an email with your child's name and instrument, or come up to talk with me after the organ postlude. I am looking forward to practicing with your children!

TinaFrom the Youth Minister:

We had a great Getaway Retreat over this past Fall Break Weekend! Claudia was such a gracious host! We had a delicious grill out Friday night, followed by a birthday party, a bonfire with s'mores, Compline, a lot of laughter and a beautiful night walk under a full moon! Then Saturday we had breakfast, learned about Morning Prayer, and set out to Falls Creek Falls for a Hike. We had lunch by the falls, and then headed back to the trailhead and back to Claudia's. As a final closing activity I had the youth complete an artistic response to their experience over the retreat, as a form of creative prayer. Originally, I was going to take their art pieces and overlay each piece with a letter (G-E-T-A-W-A-Y) to make it a communal work, but after I took the time to look over the pieces, I changed my mind. I think if you get a chance to see them you'll understand why! They are on display in the Youth Room.

Whenever I go on retreats, there is always some time, some space or moment, where I go back in time and remember some of the great retreats I have been on, both as a youth and as an adult. I remember really busy, really stressful, really uncertain seasons of my life, especially as a teenager, where the second my feet hit the earth of the mountain/woods ish type retreat center my group was staying at, I could feel myself breathe again.

It was only today that I connected the dots and recognized that I had completed the circle. I looked up the retreat center I went to as a teenager on the map today: Awanita Valley Christian Retreat Center. I always felt like it must be near here. I remember going on hummer rides up a mountain where we'd get to look out and see South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee all at the same time. Sure enough, the retreat center situates itself in Marietta, SC, only about thirty minutes away from St. James. My heart smiled as my brain registered that God has been sowing a love of this area into my heart for quite some time. I look forward to inviting our youth on more "Getaways" where they can continue to encounter God in the beauty of the Upstate, too.

Peace,

Tina Boyd

"Don't make me come down there!"

You might have heard this. You might have even said this. I'm inviting you to actually DO this. If you have the chance, please come visit the St James Day School.  We are busy down here. We are busy learning and we are busy playing.

In October we took 130 people to Denver Downs Farm for a field trip. In November children will explore the properties of clay with Jay Owens on Pottery Day.

Each and every day our children learn through creative play and craftwork. So come down here.

See the shaving cream spread out on tables with letters drawn into it.

Make a black cat out of a paper plate shaped like the letter "C".

See the orange paint on pretend pumpkin pie slices.

Pull paper clips through water with a magnet.

Climb in the sunshine. Why not?

We do it and we believe there is no better way to see the light of Christ than through the eyes of a happy child learning something new. Join us!

Prayer and Spirituality Commission

We all experience times of difficulty, and it is comforting to know that others are praying for us.  Prayer is connecting to God's power.  The newly formed Prayer and Spirituality Commission would like to invite the people of St. James to share, receive, and pray for each other's needs. Our own chapter of the Daughters of the King provides prayer request cards in the narthex near our name tag board. You are invited to write your prayer concern on a card and drop it in the wooden box provided for that purpose. You may email or call our church office to add a name to the parish prayer list. If you do not want it printed in the church bulletin, please let us know.

We are searching for individuals who have a calling to intercede in prayer.  If you have a heart for prayer and want to be included as an intercessor, please email Karen Wolfe.

We now have a page on the St. James website under Formation where you can share a prayer concern--or praise and thanksgiving--with the intercessors and the Daughters of the King.  Let us pray and love one another as Christ loves us.

Climbing Higher

"Jesus said: 'You will see greater things than these. Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.'"
John 1:50-51

Jesus' invitation to discipleship promises that, when we respond to his call, we will experience more abundance and joy than we can imagine.  Through the generosity of its parishioners Saint James has historically experienced great abundance. We are building on a solid foundation, and continue to be blessed by decisions and commitments from years past. Together we have accomplished:

*    Renovation of the sanctuary to provide a more intentional worship space

*    Construction of the Parish Life Center (PLC) for faith-based activities

*    Conversion of the PLC common room to worship space for the Saint Francis parish

*    Funding the pipe organ to enhance worship services

*    Hiring of a full-time youth minister to nourish youth and young adults

*    Retiring the church's mortgage debt

Father Stephen and the vestry have taken steps in the last year to further increase both our parish commitment to outreach and our contribution to the diocese, much of which also goes to outreach. Our mission and outreach plans are only possible through the donation of time, talent, and treasure by the members and other supporters of Saint James.

Please prayerfully consider God's call to make a financial pledge to the church at whatever level your personal situation will allow. The enclosed pledge card also includes the opportunity to contribute your time and talent to support Saint James. Your commitment via the pledge will let Father Stephen, the vestry, and the many active church committees know what resources will be available as they make plans and set priorities for Saint James to do God's work in our community and in the world.

Click here to read "Why We Give: Stories of Faithful Giving," to print a pledge card, or to make an online pledge. Please submit your pledge by November 13.

Thank you for supporting the ministries of Saint James.

Sincerely,

Saint James Episcopal

You are invited to "count your many blessings" by putting aside a small amount of money in gratitude for God's gifts.  A simple daily contribution, however small, has tremendous power when combined with the offerings of other grateful Episcopalians.  Use the UTO envelope found in the pews or on the hall table along with the "blue boxes" and bring them to church on November 13th.  The "blue boxes" are especially helpful for children to be able to show all the things they are thankful for - pets, Moms and Dads, Grandparents, and friends.
Think of the possibilities!  Your prayers and offerings have built churches and schools, made needed renovations, fed the hungry, clothed the poor, sheltered the homeless, and have provided care and support for those with physical, mental, and emotional challenges.
Last year $1,558,006 in grants were awarded  for projects that address human needs and help alleviate poverty, both domestically and internationally in The Episcopal Church. Click here to see the complete list of those awarded grants.
