From the Rector

Good Lord, Deliver Us

This Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent and it is traditional to mark this occasion with a unique liturgy of the Church. This Sunday, we will begin our service by chanting the Great Litany, a powerful statement of our belief in God's goodness and providence. The Great Litany has a unique history and deep roots in the psalms and other texts, and reminds us that the power of the creation is so much more than we human beings will ever be able to harness or control. There are times when this reality comes crashing in the guise of natural disasters, epidemics, and war, and the Great Litany is an appeal to a loving God to defend the faithful from those things outside their control.

For a solid introduction to the history and uses of the Great Litany, please click below to read this excellent article in The Living Church by Mark A. Michael.

From the Music Director and Organist:

O Lord, Hear My Prayer

O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer, when I call answer me;
O Lord hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer come and listen to me.

(Lyrics Copyright 1982, 1991 by Ateliers et Presses de Taizé, Taizé Community. Included here using OneLicense.net #A-712114.)

At communion this Sunday we will chant this short meditation. The lyrics are phrases from Psalms 143:1, 102:2; and 66:16. (Parts of these petitions can also be found in Job and Isaiah.) This particular musical setting is a Taizé chant written by Jacques Berthier. "Born in Auxerre, Burgundy in 1923 and trained in music at the César Franck School in Paris, in 1955 Berthier was first asked to compose music for the Taizé Community, which was then just a monastic community of twenty brothers...In 1975, Berthier was again asked to compose for Taizé, this time for chants to be sung by the increasing numbers of young people coming to worship there. Over nearly twenty years, Berthier built up a body of church music that has been utilized around the world." (hymnary.org) The current songbook used at the Community of Taizé in Taizé, France, includes 71 songs by Bethier. Berthier died at his home in Paris in 1994.

I have included here some links for you to listen to with the chant we will sing on Sunday:

Dr. Karen A. Eshelman
From the Youth Minister

This past Sunday, we sang a whole ton of Alleluias. Father Stephen reminded us that the reason we did that was to mark the changing of the season. He reminded us that that was the last Sunday we would be singing Alleluias for some time.

In saying farewell to the Alleluia, we have the opportunity to say hello to Lent, which started on Wednesday. One of the things I have really come to appreciate about Lent is that it is a longer special season. It is something that we can settle into a little easier, and there is not the present-buying insanity often associated with Advent looking towards Christmas.
Because of this, Youth Ministers rejoice in having a season that sparks their creativity, and gives them space to try something new or different, and build habits of formation.

In weaving together threads from a number of conversations I've had since being here at St. James, I have decided that during EYC over the season of Lent, we are going to be looking at, studying, and engaging in different types of prayer practices. Youth are uniquely created beings (as are all humans), and in the same way that different youth have different ways they best learn or communicate, I believe that youth (and all humans), have different ways that they best pray. And so, over Lent on Sunday nights, we will still have a free meal and play some games at the beginning of each meeting, but then we are going to transition in to something a little different. We are going to look at and engage in some kinetic prayer practices, we are going to look at and engage in some creative (as in youth will create something as a form of prayer) prayer practices, we are going to look at and engage in some contemplative prayer practices, and we are going to look at and engage in some verbal/communal prayer practices.

One of my goals in youth ministry is to foster the spiritual formation of teenagers by equipping them with tools to build, maintain, and grow in their relationships with Jesus Christ outside of church walls, and beyond when they are teen-aged. My desire and prayer is that through seasons and studies like what we have ahead, youth will have an opportunity to encounter God in a new way, and begin to discover what some of the best tools are for them as individuals.

I am looking forward to walking prayerfully with you all through Lent this season!

Peace,

Tina Boyd

From the Day School:

I did it...I blinked!  In my heart, I still have two little girls but in reality they are 26 and 20.  Where did that time go?  It seems like yesterday that we were juggling everything from PTA meetings to basketball, cheer practices and piano lessons... always racing from point A to Point B.  Our days were certainly full and sometimes exhausting.  If I could go back to that insanity, would I?  You bet I would!

I believe God gave us children to not only love and nurture but to also give us that window of wonder they see through. They are spontaneous, energetic and inspire us.  They have a way of simplifying things and as they grow, they continue to give us insight beyond measure.  I think that's why I love being a mother and a preschool teacher at St. James.   I get to witness their excitement for new discoveries and help to nurture their spirit.   My girls are grown and I still share in their delight of new adventures and experiences and I thank God for all of those blinking moments.

Christian Education: Sundays from 10:10-10:50 a.m.
  • Adult Christian Education:  This Sunday we will begin a special Lenten series led by Furman English professor Margaret Oakes on the great Anglican poets, John Donne and George Herbert. George Herbert, scion of one of England's most prominent families, was a priest for a small rural parish near Salisbury. Herbert wrote a series of meditative poems that are seemingly simplistic but actually contain complex theological ideas, stunning images, and a sensitivity to knotty theological problems.  Please join us this Sunday at 10:10 in the library.
  • Youth Christian Education in the Youth Room. This semester we are walking through the book of James in an inductive study called Hear and Do.
  • Children age 3 through grade 5 meet together first in the large classroom on the lower level and then divide by ages.
  • Nursery is available for younger children on the lower level.
We are currently in a season of searching for new people to partner with us in our Children's Christian Education Program here at St. James. If this is something that you might be interested in learning more about, please contact Tina Boyd, at youthminister@stjamesgreenville.org. Thanks so much!"
Daughters of the King: Admission to Study

The Daughters of the King invite all women interested in learning about the Order to join a study which will begin the last week in February.  This is a 12-week study.  At the end of 8 sessions, you make a decision whether or not to continue with the study and be admitted to the order.  Please contact Gail Burch or Boyd Cater if you would like to join this study.

Faith Seeking Understanding

This is a class for seekers and seasoned believers where all questions are welcomed in an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, faithful inquiry, and mutual respect. This class is not limited to St. James members or Episcopalians only: this class welcomes all who want to deepen their knowledge of the Christian faith. Class meets in the main church foyer.

The Monday class will NOT meet this week, February 15.
