Presbytery meeting
125th Stated Meeting
May 21, 2016
Vanderbilt Divinity School
411 21st Ave S
Nashville, Tn 37240

The meeting will be similar in some respects to most of our meetings -we will begin with worship, work our way through the agenda, hear reports, take action on recommendations - all the usual presbytery meeting tasks.
The Rev. Dr. Alice Ridgill, a teaching elder member of the Presbytery of Trinity in South Carolina will lead worship and preach.  The presbytery's commissioners to the 222nd General Assembly (2016) will be commissioned during worship, and the offering collected will go to the Committee on Preparation for Ministry's work with inquirers and candidates.
In some ways, this meeting will be a little different from meetings in the past - this meeting is hosted by the Vanderbilt Divinity School instead of one of our churches.  Worship, as well as most of the meeting, will be held in Benton Chapel, and we will take advantage of the large classroom spaces for presentations by three Vanderbilt professors.  Information on the presentations is included in this newsletter, the presbytery packet, and
on the presbytery website (
www.pbymidtn.org).

Please review the materials in advance of the meeting.  Don't hesitate to contact Moderator Virginia Lovellette (vslovellette@gmail.com), Executive Presbyter Warner Durnell (ep@pbymidtn.org), or Stated Clerk Therese Howell (sc@pbymidtn.org) if you have any questions about the meeting.

If you are planning on attending the presbytery meeting, please register here.
Please pray for
The Outreach Foundation team as they go to Ethiopia and South Sudan May 10-24, 2016.

Jeff Ritchie, Outreach's Associate Director for Mission, and Commissioned Ruling Elder David Paduil, pastor of the Sudanese Presbyterian Church in Gallatin, will be joined by another representative from the Sudanese American Presbyterian Fellowship in San Diego, CA plus two representatives of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Egypt. Their itinerary includes time in the refugee camps in Gambella, Western Ethiopia where South Sudanese have lived since the current civil war began in December 2013. It also includes four days in Juba, South Sudan where they will meet with the leadership of our church partner, the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan.

PMT churches have contributed over $5000 for this year's mission to Ethiopia and South Sudan. Thank you so much. We will have reports upon our return and more opportunities to support our brothers and sisters from South Sudan in the refugee camps as they move toward peace and a chance to return to South Sudan.

May 21, 2016 Stated Presbytery Meeting

Preaching for Morning Worship at our May 21, 2016 Spring Stated Presbytery Meeting will be the Rev. Dr. Alice Ridgill, Pastor of the New Faith Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, South Carolina.  Commissioners, corresponding members and visitors will be called to worship at 9:05 am in Benton Chapel on the campus of the Vanderbilt Divinity School.  The scripture text Dr. Ridgill has chosen for this occasion is Isaiah 43:14-19 and the sermon title is "A New Thing"...read more about Dr. Alice Ridgill.

Three Vanderbilt Divinity School Professors in the Reformed Tradition will be presenting abbreviated lectures on favorite topics of their choosing.  This is one of the "bangs for our bucks" that we will receive for having scheduled our Spring Stated Presbytery Meeting at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  Commissioners, corresponding members and visitors will need to sign up for the lecture of their choosing either in the Pre-Registration Process or when registering the day of the meeting.  These lectures will be held concurrently from 11:20 am until the 12 noon lunch in locations to be announced at the Presbytery Meeting.  We hope to have commissioner attendance fairly evenly divided among these lectures, so there will be a cut-off number.  When you Pre-Register electronically for the Meeting, also sign up for your first and second choice of lectures in order to enhance the likelihood that you will be able to attend the lecture of your first choice.

Presenting on the topic, "Faith and Phones: Technological Intelligence for Spiritual People," will be the Rev. Dr. Jaco Hamman, Associate Professor of Religion, Psychology, and Culture.  Dr. Hamman will be drawing from his book, now in production, titled, Growing Down: Human Nature for Virtual People (Baylor University Press)...read more about Dr. Jaco Hamman.

Presenting on the topic, "Religion and Globalization: Key Dynamics Characterizing Religion in the Global Context," will be Dr. Graham Reside, Executive Director of the Cal Turner Program in Moral Leadership for the Professions.  In this shortened lecture, Dr. Reside will address the rise of Islam, the shift of the center of Gravity of Christianity to the Global South, the "secularization" of the West, and the revitalization of the rest.  Utilizing recent studies in global religious demography, Dr. Reside will seek to paint a portrait of the global situation, and reflect on its significance for contemporary Christianity in the United States...read more about Dr. Graham Reside.

Presenting on the topic, "Reformed Wisdom for a Divisive Season in American Politics",will be the Rev. Dr. James Hudnut-Beumler, The Anne Potter Wilson Distinguished Professor of American Religious History.  Hopefully this subject matter will be found helpful in discovering ways to respond as people of faith amidst all the political and social divides we are experiencing in contemporary American culture.  Dr. Hudnut-Beumler is a member of the American Academy of Religion, American Society of Church History, and the Organization of American Historians...read more about Dr. James Hudnut-Beumler.

 CONGRATULATIONS TO
JUSTIN AND APRIL GUNG
ON THEIR ADOPTION OF
ISAIAH KENNEDY EATON GUNG

Isaiah Kennedy Eaton was born on July 15, 2015. April, my wife, and I were present for his birth and brought him into our home directly from the hospital. In December of that year, there was an indication that Isaiah's adoption would be contested by the birth-father. This set in motion several months of worry, uncertainty, and unanticipated legal proceedings.

On Tuesday, May 3, 2016, the Honorable Philip E. Smith finalized these proceedings. Isaiah's adoption is now legally finished and he is a permanent member of the Gung family (and God's covenant family). His name is now Isaiah Kennedy Eaton Gung.
Throughout Isaiah's life, but especially in the past five months, April and I have been so blessed by the prayers, comfort, and best wishes of the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee. We are grateful to God for the blessing of Christian community!
