119th Stated Presbytery Meeting Highlights
by Therese Howell
 Stated Clerk

Commissioners were welcomed by members of the session and congregation of First Presbyterian Church, Franklin.  Worship was led by The Rev. Chris Joiner, pastor of the host church.  The Rev. Dr. Craig Barnes, President of Princeton Theological Seminary, preached the sermon.  The offering was collected for peacemaking in the Ukraine, and mission co-workers Ellen Smith and Rev. Victor Ignatenkov spoke of their work in Eastern Europe.  The Lord's Supper was celebrated.

The presbytery elected The Rev. Steve Thomas, Belfast, as 2015 Moderator, and Ruling Elder Virginia Lovellette, First Cookeville, as Moderator-in-Nomination.

Executive Presbyter Warner Durnell, and members of the Special Visioning Task Force (Steve Douse, James Hudnut-Beumler, Sally Hughes, Robert Montgomery), presented the task force's report and recommendations, which were approved.  Three Steering Committees will be tasked with the responsibility of planning, promoting, and processing Vision objectives and goals; the Coordinating Committee is authorized to appoint a chairperson for each Steering Committee, and a member of the CC will be liaison to each Steering Committee.  Each stated meeting in 2015 and 2016 will include special presentations highlighting vision implementation.  The Special Visioning Task Force's three objectives, and related goals, approved by the presbytery, are:

Objective 1:  Building Up the Body Through Connections of Mutual Support

Goals to help broker fruit-bearing collaboration and community through:

  1. Annual Neighborhood Meetings
  2. Association of Campus Ministries
  3. Guatemalan Partnership and Hunger Action
  4. Sharing of Church Contributions
  5. Technological Think Tank

Objective 2:  Building Up the Body Through Leadership Development

Goals to encourage, train, and equip teaching and ruling elders through:

  1. "Barnabas Leadership Group"
  2. Celebration of the Resurrection
  3. College of Preachers
  4. Excellence in Officer Education
  5. Fellowship of the Ordained

Objective 3:  Building Up the Body Through Church Transformation

Goals to work for spiritual and numerical growth through:

  1. Annual "Celebrate the Journey" Reports
  2. Creation of a Church Transformation and Growth Strategy
  3. Healthy Congregation Seminars
  4. Planting New Churches and Redevelopment of Churches
  5. Prayer Covenant and Prayer Summits

APA 2014 National Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico
by Linda Griffis
 PMT Administrative Assistant

Thank you to the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee for giving me the privilege to attend the Administrative Professional Association's (APA) National Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 14-19 as my primary continuing education for this year.  I have been a member of the APA since 2009 and certified at Level 1.

This year's conference theme was "Fallow Time; allow a time for rest, to breathe, and to renew".  I am currently working on my Level 2 certification to which I participated in the following classes; Pastoral Care for Self and Others, Ministry of Reconciliation, PC(USA) History since Reunion, and  Christology II.  This conference was a great time of worship, learning and fellowship.  It was a chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones.  APA is a wonderful networking place to meet fellow adminstrators from around the different parts of the country and share stories, ideas, and to learn new ways of doing your job.

The Mission of APA is to offer opportunities for professional development and personal growth for those called by God to serve as support staff of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This mission is accomplished by providing continuing education events for certification and occasions for fellowship, worship and spiritual nurture and prayer at both National and Regional meetings as well as seminary sponsored training events.

Currently from the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee we have five people that are involved with APA; myself, Freda
APA Mid-South Region Attendees of the National APA Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dye, Donelson PC; Linda Rogers, Trinity PC; Sarah White, Second PC and Christine Jastrow, Glen Leven PC.  If you are interested in knowing more about APA, please give me a call at the Presbytery office (615) 332-3330 or you can visit the APA website at
