CDSP to Host Diocese of California Interns
Episcopal Service Corps members will live on campus

Beginning in August, up to eight interns with the Diocese of California's Episcopal Service Corps program will live on the campus of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) and participate in the life of the seminary.

Living on the seminary's campus will provide richer educational and social opportunities for the interns and immerse them in the life of a Christian community dedicated to study, prayer and fellowship, said leaders of the diocese and seminary. The seminary will benefit from the diverse perspectives and experiences of the interns who will be working at churches and non-profit organizations in the Bay Area while living on campus.

"This partnership is an excellent example of vitality practices we seek to employ in the Diocese of California," the Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California said. "This partnership demonstrates collaboration between CDSP and the Diocese of California, offers chances for embeddedness in a variety of communities for interns, and the Bay Area is teaming with diversity - to which the interns have continually contributed with their presence."

"We are looking forward to inviting the Episcopal Service Corps interns into the rhythms of our daily life," said the Rev. Dr. W. Mark Richardson, dean and president of CDSP. "CDSP trains students to respond to the challenges of contemporary society with the Good News of Jesus Christ. The work these interns will do will help them to develop their own particular insights about those challenges. That can't help but enrich the conversation on our campus and deepen the experience of seminarians and interns alike."

When students visit the only Episcopal seminary west of the Rockies, they can attend classes, join the community for common worship in All Saints Chapel, experience Thursday Community Nights with evening Eucharist, share meals and conversation and explore the richness of ecumenical life on Holy Hill.

Visiting campus during See CDSP is also a perfect opportunity to learn more about our newest programs, including a low-residence master of divinity option and the new online master of theological studies and certificate of theological studies.

Organizing for Public Ministry January 18-23
Industrial Areas Foundation training teaches skills for public mission

Here's what Ethan Lowery, a former Episcopal Service Corps member and current Episcopal Relief & Development intern, had to say about Organizing for Public Ministry at CDSP:

"To say 'I'm excited' to bring these concepts back to my work is a laughable understatement - this week has been paradigm-shifting for me. I feel hugely re-inspired and I'm absolutely chomping at the bit to get back to it Monday morning."

Taught by a team of experienced Industrial Areas Foundation community organizers, the class covers conceptual studies and practical skills to engage the church's public mission in the world, with special attention to:

  • Mission
  • Sustainable leadership
  • Strategic thinking and acting
  • Forming collaborative relationships for missional action.
The class returns January 18-23. Space is limited, and last year, we had to turn people away. Learn more and register online now!

Winter courses begin January 26

From January 26-March 16, CDSP's Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership (CALL) offers online courses for continuing education and formation:
Two additional classes are especially designed those preparing for the Episcopal Church's General Convention in June 2015:
Use of the Body in Ministry
January 12-16 course with the Rev. Dr. John Conger

We all speak in gestures as well as words. This class teaches students how to be fully grounded and present with congregants, both when preaching and when meeting people at the door or in the hospital. According to instructor John Conger, "This class will teach you how to ground a secure sense of yourself in such a way that your preaching and pastoral skills will be more satisfying and secure."

Conger, who is a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and trainer in bioenergetic analysis, has taught this method for many years in graduate schools of psychology and has written several books about it, including Jung and Reich: The Body as Shadow.

Community News

The Rev. Sarah Quinney '15 wrote a "SIMber Day Letter" for Society for the Increase of the Ministry:

"This time of year reminds us of the enormity of changes that our futures hold. It is exciting and scary. As we await the coming of our Lord, may we be filled with excitement and joy over his coming and may the love of the Holy Spirit fill us with all comfort and peace." Read the entire letter.

The Rev. Andrew Hybl '12, director of admissions, and his wife, Julie Wilkinson Hybl, welcomed Alice Elizabeth Hybl on December 23. Both Julie and Alice, who joins big brother Oliver, are happy and healthy.
