Greetings!

Wow. Spring has sprung in Summit County, and our beloved landscapes are coming alive! It is absolutely beaUTAHful out there. Ever feel like you need to unwind after a long day of work or wrangling the kids? We highly recommend taking a stroll on the open spaces that make this place so grand. The healing powers of VitaminN (aka nature) are remarkable! However as snow and rain continue to visit the mountains, please remember to steer clear of any mud while hiking and biking, as ruts affect the quality and sustainability of our trails. If there's wet ground, turn around!

March and April have been busy months for us. We submitted all re-accreditation materials to the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, and Executive Director Cheryl Fox even paid a visit to our nation's capital to discuss land conservation with our elected officials during the Land Trust Alliance Advocacy Days. We had an awesome turnout for our first-ever Moon Shine Adventure full moon ski tour, and are looking forward to expanding this program during the 2017 winter season. Community members learned more about the Public Lands Initiative through the Summit Land Conservancy's sponsored public broadcast of the Project for Deeper Understanding's discussion on KPCW, and they experienced the permaculture perspective with a free screening of the film INHABIT (thanks to our friends at the Park City Film Series!) Registration for our Outdoor Explorers summer camps launched in the beginning of April, and spaces are filling up quickly. We also have some amazing land conservation projects coming down the pike, and are working hard to move through to the next stages of preservation.

Enjoy this edition of our May/June newsletter, and don't forget to get outside to appreciate this gorgeous weather.

Your Donations at Work.

Gibbons Pace Ranch:
The Gibbons Pace Ranch is an 88 acre property of lush pastureland located in northern Wanship, Utah. This beautiful open space offers prime wildlife habitat and angler access on the Weber River corridor, one of Utah's prime blue ribbon fisheries. DA, Louise, Cory, Colleen, and daughter Chrissy Pace live on and support the operation of this agricultural ranch. We are extremely honored to be working with this family to protect their home and agricultural heritage in perpetuity! Previously the Gibbons Pace Land and Livestock Company raised both milk cows and beef cattle. Approximately 10 years ago, the family stopped producing milk cows and increased their beef cows from a herd of 50 to 150. Over the past 25 years the operation has been successful at selling their cattle at the Coalville Calf Pool less than a mile down the road.

The Pace family shows a deep commitment toward stewardship of their land. They perform sustainable practices and are currently implementing an NRCS Plan (to be completed July 2016). An Information for Planning and Conservation (IPaC) Resource Report from the US Fish and Wildlife Service compiled for this property indicates 2 species managed by the Endangered Species Program. In addition, 29 migratory birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act were also identified as potentially using this land, including raptors and song birds. On a good day, you can watch the Bald Eagles gracefully soar high above.

Thank you to the Pace family for working with us to conserve this wonderful piece of property!

Conservation Breakfast:
May 11th is just around the corner! Make sure to reserve your seats for our Conservation Breakfast at Deer Valley Resort while you still can! Thanks to Vail EpicPromise, we will feature guest speaker Scott D. Sampson, author of "How to Raise a Wild Child, The Art and Science of Falling in Love with Nature". Sampson is a passionate advocate for connecting people with nature. He serves as vice president of research and collections and chief curator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and as host and science advisor for the PBS KIDS television series Dinosaur Train. Scott is also Program Ambassador of Nature Rocks, a global initiative of the Nature Conservancy aimed at inspiring families to explore nature. To learn more about Sampson's amazing work, click HERE to read the Park Record's latest article. There is no cost to attend the Conservation Breakfast, however it is a fundraiser to support local land conservation. To RSVP for this event please email sophie@wesaveland.org

Hops Hunters 2016:
Hop Hunting Season is quickly approaching us! Do you love a cold pint o' brew, or are you interested in learning more about the local history and ecology of Park City? Our Hops Hunters program is just the right opportunity to get out and enjoy a Sunday stroll on open spaces protected by the Conservancy. The first hike will take place on Sunday, June 12th at 9:30 am on our Empire Canyon easement. Hops Hunters will be seeking wild-growing hops binds, descendants of plants originally brought over by German miners. In the fall, the hops are collected by volunteers to be used in a special edition local ale brewed in partnership with Wasatch Brewery! Hops Hunters participants should wear hiking shoes and sunscreen and also bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash and friendly! For more information about our program, or to learn more about upcoming dates and locations for hops hikes, you can email shawna@wesaveland.org or visit our Sign Up Genius page.

Eat Pizza Save Land:
On Sunday, May 22nd Vinto Pizzeria will donate a portion of their sales to saving local open space. If you love delicious brick oven style pizzas, pasta dishes, and salads, this is definitely the night to go out on the town and indulge. Put that gluten-free diet on hold for one day and splurge away. Heck, you might as well order some gelato too!

Outdoor Explorers Summer Camps:
Getting kids outside is more important than ever these days. Let your child experience the magic of nature by enrolling them in our one-of-a-kind Outdoor Explorers adventure camps! There are still a few spaces left (Sessions 1 and 4), so don't miss out on this awesome opportunity. Visit our website to register TODAY.

Park City Day Schoolers Study Wildlife:
For the past three months, the Park City Day School 5th grade students have been conducting a wildlife study on conservation easements protected by the Summit Land Conservancy as their service learning project. The focus of this project demonstrates the importance of contiguous green spaces acting as migration corridors for local wildlife species. With motion censored cameras we have captured some great video clips and photos of different critters stretching from McPolin Farmlands to Round Valley! Stay tuned for more details on a special presentation to be given by the Park City Day Schoolers during the third week of May. Come listen to what these young scientists have to say about our local wildlife and green spaces!

Blue Sky Bash:
Yeehaw! Our Blue Sky Bash soiree for open space will take place Saturday, August 20th at the Blue Sky Ranch. This fundraiser ain't your stuffy dinner auction party. We'll be serving up signature High West cowboy cocktails, boot stomping tunes from Artie Hemphill and the Iron Horse Band, and rip-roaring items to bid on! Jennifer Gardner:
Jennifer Gardner and her husband moved to Park City from Los Angeles five years ago and became full time residents. They visited for six years prior to permanently relocating, and enjoyed Park City's world class skiing, however it was their first summer visit that truly sealed the deal. Jennifer believes that Summit County is a pocket of paradise with it's charming open spaces and she is passionate about preventing urban sprawl in the community she has come to love.
Jennifer enjoys Park City's small town vibe and likes spending her free time volunteering and working with various local nonprofits such as ski instructing with the National Ability Center, and serving on the Board of Directors for Recycle Utah. She also gives time to Canines With A Cause, Paws for Life, Nuzzles & Co. and the Kimball Art Center. Jennifer's passions for recycling and sustainability brought her to us as one of our most valued volunteers! When our recycling corner starts to resemble a leaning tower of boxes, Jennifer always comes to the rescue! We are extremely grateful for her dedicated service and appreciate her visits with Jackson, her standard poodle, every other Friday. Thank you for being an open space champion Jennifer!

Kids Outdoors
Our last session of Kids Outdoors (this school year) will be Tuesday, May 17th. Join us as we take the Holy Cross Ministries Parley's Park Elementary and McPolin Elementary after school programs to McPolin Farmlands! Kids Outdoors restores nature play and connects our youth to the land. As kids begin to lose touch with their natural surroundings we aim to create memories outdoors that will foster environmental ethics. Through this program we hope to excite new, young stewards and conservationists...because if our children don't care, who will? Volunteer as a Play Naturalist, and inspire the future guardians of this beautiful planet! Learn more and sign up here.

Make sure to visit our Sign Up Genius listings for new volunteer opportunities! You can find them by entering caitlin@wesaveland.org on the Find a Sign Up page. We also welcome other ideas and suggestions of ways you feel you can help and would like to contribute.
