Love Hops and Trivia?

This Sunday, Summit Land Conservancy will host its first Hops Hunters Hike for the 2015 season. If you love a good hunt and/or a cold cup o' brew, this is the experience you've been looking for. Join the adventure, and help scout out wild hops populations on local open spaces protected by the Conservancy!

Interested parties should plan to meet at the gate located at the bottom of Daly Avenue in Empire Canyon at 9:30 am (June 14th). Come prepared in comfortable, weather appropriate attire, ready to hike one of our cherished easements. To learn more about the program and other Hops Hunters hikes, email mckenzie@wesaveland.orgYou never know what you might find!

Do you prefer throwing back a pint at your favorite dive AND think you're a mastermind of trivia? We are searching for the perfect intelligentsia (21 years or older) to plan and develop a pub quiz for an evening of fun at Wasatch Brew Pub. This unique pub quiz experience is planned to run one night in conjunction with our Hops Hunters hikes and should embody a land, air, and water theme. It is a great opportunity for a volunteer to get creative and have loads of FUN! If you are interested in becoming our pub quiz guru, email caitlin@wesaveland.org.

Have you seen this plant?
Eat it to Beat it!

While recreating on the beautiful open spaces of Park City, you many have noticed an abundant plant called garlic mustard. With its tiny white flowers and heart shaped leaves it may look friendly, however it is considered an invasive weed that poses a threat to native species.
So how can we counteract the invasion of garlic mustard in Summit County? Eat it to beat it!

Caitlin's Garlic Lovers Pesto
  • Several cups of garlic mustard leaves
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 small shallot
  • Splash of white wine vinegar
  • Splash of balsamic vinegar
  • Squirt of fresh lemon juice
  • Squirt of honey
  • Handful of good Parmesan
  • Handful of pecans (or walnuts)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive Oil
Add ingredients to a blender or food processor, and pulse until you have reached desired consistency. Don't be afraid to play around with the ingredients to please your personal taste buds. Spread pesto on toasted bread with a fried egg, or enjoy on your favorite pasta!

* Please be aware that some populations of garlic mustard have been treated with herbicides, and be sure to know whether the landowner has been treating their plants.

"Lady Morgan springs on a tranquil morning, much lower water level than from 3 springs ago."

We at Summit Land Conservancy, rely on the help from many types of volunteers in a variety of different ways. Volunteering provides not only a valuable service to us, but it can be a rewarding experience to many. This month we were fortunate enough to hike our Empire Canyon easement with a special volunteer who has been involved with the Adopt an Easement program for over a year. We had an amazing time exploring and learning about Empire Canyon's hidden treasures from an avid hiker who has lived in the Park City community for more than 40 years. Her passion for conserving open space is contagious and inspiring.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Adopt an Easement Program, please email caitlin@wesaveland.org for more information.
