Think about your favorite memories of outdoor play as a child. Chances are those memories involve some type of unstructured play in "wild" spaces without an adult in sight. Maybe your fondest recollections are of building your "dream" tree house in the backyard, catching frogs and fireflies, splashing around in cool streams, mucking through the mud, or digging a hole all the way to "China". All these great unstructured activities are considered nature play, and they benefit childhood development in countless ways! Research shows that nature play is the most common influence on the development of adult conservation values, yet it is vanishing from children's lives.
On February 6th, Summit Land Conservancy conducted the very first session of our pilot program, Kids Outdoors. Kids Outdoors is a new youth program focusing on the importance of restoring nature play to local youth in Park City. This year the Conservancy has partnered with the Holy Cross Ministries after-school program, and will bring children ages 5-11 out onto open spaces once a month. We hope this initiative will help give our future generations experiences of nature play and, in turn, instill the life-long environmental ethic needed to carry on the work of conservation years down the road!
We are currently looking for "Play Naturalist" volunteers to help chaperone these excursions on our protected open spaces. Since the objective is to let children enjoy the experiences of free play outdoors, there are no predetermined activities for our visits. We are looking for volunteers to solely watch the magic unfold as young whippersnappers embark on new adventures of freedom in nature!
