Dear Friends,
Last week I attended the Mother's Day Tea at the White House for military families. The tea was held in the East Wing and included an opportunity to greet the First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the wife of the vice-president, Jill Biden, and to hear them speak. Their message was simply to recognize the sacrifices that mothers in military families make, whether as a soldier themselves or as the mother or wife of a soldier. As I looked around the room, I saw young women in uniform hugging each other and older women silently weeping. There were mothers with babies in strollers and trios spanning three generations. I accompanied my sister, Jane, and my nephew Elliott. Jane's son and Elliott's brother, Matt Abbate, was killed in Afghanistan four years ago. He was in the Marines and received the Navy Cross for his bravery and sacrifice in saving the lives of the men in his patrol. I found the event to be very healing for the women present - a moment when their experience was recognized and honored. I also found it sobering to see before me the far-reaching impact of war on families and friends. I pray for the day when we trust Jesus' direction of non-violence as a path to happiness in the world. Some think it is naïve, and yet few can proclaim the recent wars in the Middle East as successful missions towards peace. Instead, we find ourselves projecting a darker and more fearful future. We need a better way.
Congratulations to our children who received their First Holy Communion last Saturday. They are Ava Brugno, Ryan Arnold, Nick Arnold, Sam Anzellotti, Colin Guilfoyle, Olivia Vassallo, Harper Myers, Cate Myers, Aidan Randall, Noah Jenkins, Emma Jenkins, Brandon Rodriguez, Ethan Rodriguez, Jessica Post, Ben Paulus, Kyle Hilderbrant, CJ Wheaton, Allison Albin, Emily Colgan, Christopher Colgan, Blake Preston, Daniel Lustica, Vincent Ricotta, Shannon O'Sullivan, Sofia Gianvecchio and Dylan Keating.
William Hickey, the father of Dan and Joan, died last week. We send the family our condolences. Our hearts are also with Linda (Jack) Mazur on the death of her mother, Dorothy DeBacco. We also send our love to Roxanne Crawford on the death of her twin brother, Bobby. Our love goes to Shaheem Hallon on the death of his grandmother.
Our parish picnic is Sunday, June 7! We'll be at Camp Eastman in Irondequoit across from the lake from 11 am - 2 pm. We'll barbeque hot dogs and burgers. Bring a dish-to-pass to add to the banquet. There will be organized fun games for the kids and a water park to play in. Bring your lawn chairs, bocce balls, Frisbees, and kickballs!
Our next Visioning Board meeting is Tuesday, May 26 from 5 - 7 pm.
Thanks to Laurie Fromm for donating her quilt to raise money for our outreaches. She raised $1,445!
This weekend, Myra Brown will be ordained a deacon at the 5 pm Mass on Saturday followed by a dessert reception. On Sunday, she will celebrate her first two Masses. Congratulations, Myra!
With love,
Rev. Mary

FROM THE MOTHER EARTH COMMUNITY: Mark your calendars for a can't miss opportunity with your friends on a delightful hike in Webster Park on Lake Ontario, Saturday, May 30! Gathering at 9 am, we'll walk through "beautiful evergreen planted slopes and cool green valleys" for about 5 miles of easy to moderate terrain, with great opportunities to view wildflowers and unusual trees like basswood, horse chestnut and sycamore. The habitats there offer the possibility of viewing birds, including wild turkeys. An auspicious day to begin a hiking habit, if you haven't formed one already, as May 30 marks the day in 1982 that local favorite Cal Ripkin, Jr. played the first of his record 2,632 consecutive major league baseball games. More details coming next week and on the MEC page, found by scrolling down on spirituschristi.org/#/ministries/social-justice-ministries. Hope to see you there.
FROM THE COMMUNITY: Save the date: Saturday, June 13, 4:30-7 pm. Pasta Fundraiser for the Pen ak Pwason food program for the elderly and disabled in Borgne, Haiti. This event is being held by the Sister Cities Collaboration between Honeoye Falls NY and Borgne at the Mendon Community Center, 167 N. Main St., Honeoye Falls. Borgne resident and former mayor Francius Estimable will be visiting!
