Project Updates

 

1. Maywood Apartments- Maywood Apartments, located at NE 4th Street and Oklahoma Avenue, is slated for completion in fall of 2013. This 4-story, 139-unit apartment complex includes structured parking, a swimming pool, and fitness center. The development received $1 million in TIF funding through assistance in development financing. This Urban Renewal Authority project broke ground in 2012.  

 

2. Kevin Durant's Southern Cuisine- Construction of Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant and the Hal Smith Group's new restaurant, Kevin Durant's Southern Cuisine, is underway in Lower Bricktown and is expected to open in October of this year. Lower Bricktown has been an on-going Urban Renewal Authority redevelopment project since 1997. 

 

3. OK Kids Korral- Toby Keith recently hosted a golf and auction fundraiser with all proceeds going towards the construction of OK Kids Korral, a cost-free home for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Construction of the OK Kids Korral began in spring of last year and expected completion is fall 2014. The project is possible through a redevelopment agreement between the Urban Renewal Authority and the Presbyterian Health Foundation.

 

Beautification Station 2013

 

This weekend, The Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City, The Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma and OKC Beautiful are hosting Beautification Station 2013. This multi-stop bus tour will guide attendees through some of Oklahoma City's historic preservation neighborhoods highlighting the city's most finely preserved homes with commentary from neighborhood leaders.

John W. Rex Elementary School Groundbreaking 

The groundbreaking for John W. Rex Elementary School will take place on May 24 at 10:30 a.m. The school will be located downtown at Walker and Sheridan Avenues on a parcel of land purchased from the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority (OCURA). The expected opening of the 79,000 square feet, pre-k through sixth grade elementary school is August 2014. Construction of the $14.4 million school is funded through MAPs for Kids, $2.4 million in private donations, and a $1.5 million TIF contribution.

 

Revitalization of Crossroads Mall: Plaza Mayor


Changes are in the works for Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City. The owner of the mall, Raptor Properties, is working with developer, Jose Lagaspi of The Legaspi Company, to transform the mall into a Hispanic driven marketplace and town center. This mall will focus on the growing Latino community and has been renamed to Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads. Twenty new tenants have signed contracts including shoe, clothing and jewelry stores. Future plans include a grocery store and entertainment venue.

The Alliance was created in 2011 to better serve the economic development needs of Oklahoma City.

With its collaboration with city and private entities, the Alliance acts as a "one-stop-shop" for businesses in need of assistance from the public sector.


2013 Parking Summit Summary

On April 29th, The Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City and the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority co-hosted the 2013 Downtown Parking Summit. More than 30 downtown property owners, commercial brokers, leasing agents, company representatives and others attended the workshop led by Walker Parking Consultants. This stakeholder focus group provided valuable information as Walker Parking Consultants works to update the downtown parking study used to identify parking habits and future downtown parking needs.

 

Cathy O'Connor, President and CEO of The Alliance, provided an update on the Arts District Parking Garage and discussed planning efforts for a 2,000+ space garage in north Bricktown. The Arts District Parking Garage broke ground in April 2013 with an anticipated completion in May 2014, which will add more 800 parking spaces and 20,000 square feet of retail space on West Main Street, just south of City Hall.
