My Dream Job: 4 CEOs Share How It Feels
 by Laura Garnett | Forbes

Are you in your dream job? Does it exist? I run across people, who, without a second thought say, yes! In contrast, I run into an equal amount of people who believe dream jobs are a nave, childhood dream.

What do you think? Is it possible to have a job that provides endless amounts of growth and fulfillment? Part of the challenge is believing it's possible - which is true for any goal. You have to have clarity on what you want before you can create it.

So often we've heard success stories about someone witnessing someone else living their dream and it inspired them. When I came across the first person in their dream job, it inspired me and drove me to create the same for myself. For this reason, sometimes you need to see it to believe it.

I asked some impressive individuals who are  in their dream jobs how it feels for them:

Jenny Blake, Author and Career Strategist

Fred Le Franc, CEO and Chaos Strategist at Results Through

Kimberly Rath, CEO TalentPlus

Alan Iny, Principal & Global Specialist i.e. "CEO of Creativity", The Boston Consulting Group and coauthor of Thinking In New Boxes

Describe the daily, prominent feeling you get from being in your dream job.

Blake: I feel a sense of freedom and focus. Freedom to choose projects I care deeply about and structure my day around. Having focus that comes from being in a "flow state" of doing meaningful work that is aligned with my strengths and the broader impact I seek to have.

Le Franc: This is a great question. I find, at times, that a part of me observes myself in situations where I say, "This is so amazing that I do what I am doing, and it is thrilling, yet blissful." It is definitely like being an athlete in the zone. There is an elevated awareness that I am doing something I feel born to do.

Rath: Significance. It's the word that pops into the minds of everyone across the globe - am I significant, and am I using my talents to make a significant impact on the world today?

Iny: There is massive variety in what I do, and yet I have huge autonomy to determine what is.  And, so, in general the feelings are of excitement and pleasure.  There is a certain amount of healthy tension as well - I struggle to find enough time to think about what's next, and prepare for the next project...I say it's healthy because that's what keeps me going and excited.

Now that you're in your dream job, how does it differ from before?

Blake: I feel calm. I used to have a very prestigious "perfect on paper" job, but one that never felt like it was fully utilizing my strengths or zone of genius. I felt bored, restless, impatient, stressed and sometimes even caged (by my own doing). Now it is rare for me to feel that. I feel a sense of being empowered, grounded, and calm choice.

Le Franc: There were times in my previous jobs where I was going crazy with dread of living the same day over and over. I felt uninspired and underutilized.

Rath: Because I was one of the founders of this company, this question is really palpable. We built the dream of what we wanted to see the business world become: a place where people could find jobs they love and feel significance every day because they were utilizing their strengths to the best of their ability. When I worked for someone else, there were limits to the impact that I could make on any given day.

Iny: It is night and day. I used to count down the weeks or days until my next project - no more. I used to complain to my wife - no more.  The only complaints I do have - wishing I had more nights at home, and wishing I had more time to think on things I'm actively working on. Put differently, I've been in my dream job for a little while now, but it's always changing. Not only that, the world around me is constantly changing, and of course I am too - this kind of evolution is exciting to me.

Use three adjectives to describe your overall state of being when operating in your current job.

Blake: strategic, focused, connected (to my broader mission and purpose in life)

Le Franc: excitement, bliss, mindfulness

Rath: energized, innovative, compelling

Iny: gratitude, excitement and pleasure (interestingly, this is not what I thought my dream job would be 10 years ago!)
