Pittsburgh KOs WC Costs
In 2006, workers' compensation accounted for six percent of Pittsburgh's budget and the city was experiencing more than 900 claims annually. Open cases dated to the late 1960s. Today, the city has 874 people on workers' compensation and total costs have dropped from about $24 million to about $17.5 million, despite rising medical costs. So why isn't everybody happy? Whistle While You Work, and Collect Some Money, too
Now here's a real motivator. AtWork Group, a national staffing franchisor based in Nashville, has created its own whistleblower program. The company's Workers' Compensation Fraud Reporting Program rewards people with hard cash -- up to $10,000 -- when they report cases of workers' compensation fraud and those cases are settled in the company's favor. North Carolina: The Injured Worker and "Constructive Refusal"
Once an injured worker returns to work, what happens if he engages in behavior that results in termination? A North Carolina court held that, where an injured worker returns to suitable employment and is subsequently terminated for cause, he may have constructively refused suitable employment and is not entitled to a resumption of indemnity benefits. Oklahoma Supreme Court to Rule on Workers' Compensation Law
A hearing is set for October 16 at the Oklahoma Supreme Court on whether a new workers' compensation law is, well, lawful. In their challenge to SB 1062, filers gave the Supreme Court almost a dozen reasons why they think the law is unconstitutional. Read More
