WEDJ Conducts Successful Lottery After Applicant Surge
For the first time in several years, WEDJ received so many applications that we had to conduct a lottery for every grade, PreK through eight. We offered spots for the Fall 2013 school year to nearly 500 students, and created a waitlist as well.
Accepted students should have already received an email and a letter in the mail explaining their acceptance and providing instructions for confirming their plans to attend WEDJ next school year.
We are now waiting for confirmation from accepted students that they plan to attend WEDJ this Fall, which is due April 12. If students decide to attend other schools and spots open up, we will contact each student on the waitlist, in order, to offer him or her a spot at WEDJ for the Fall.

WEDJ Teachers Using New Technology to Teach Familiar Subjects
Three mobile iPad labs-carts containing 25 iPads each, loaded with educational applications, were created at WEDJ at the beginning of this school year. The iPad labs were slowly integrated into classroom work. Now WEDJ has brought on board a new Education Technology Coordinator to take our usage to the next level.
WEDJ's new Education Technology Coordinator Lynura Jones is taking education technology integration further by including LCD projectors, Promethean Boards, and other unique software.
PreK teachers, for example, use an iPad app called Reading Eggs that helps students understand letters, learn to read, and write sentences. Teachers already have complementary software on their laptops so they can project interactive activities on their Promethean Boards or using their projectors. Then students can follow along on the iPads or use the educational apps independently during their own learning time.

Ms. Kensler's kindergarteners have been learning to tell time with a little help from the third graders in Mr. Dickens' class. The third graders visit kindergarten once a week as math buddies. READ MORE>>6th Graders Find Ways to Stop Bullying
The sixth-grade PALS class brought the issue of bullying front and center. They looked at the statistics and were touched by the number of students affected by this national epidemic. Students took a proactive approach as they researched to see what students across the country are doing. They decided to create a wall of art that includes stories, posters, and pictures. They also posted "No Bully Zone" signs around the building. Their aim is to get the message across that all forms of bullying - name calling, cyber bullying, isolating others, and violent actions -- are unacceptable at WEDJ and in their circles. Sixth graders are empowering WEDJ students to feel confident about speaking out on the issue. They invite other classes to add to the wall or create their own wall.
7th Graders Use Fiction to Teach Morals
In seventh-grade English language arts, students studied Aesop's Fables to understand how allegories use animals and fiction to teach morals. Their research led to discussions about how these life lessons can be applied to everyday life to help us to become wiser and build character. Now they have a better understanding of how humans often bring harm to themselves when they are greedy or do not heed advice and warnings.
8th Graders Learn the Art of DebateGWU law student and Harvard University debate coach Paul Kanellopoulos treated WEDJ eighth-graders to a four hour workshop on the fundamentals of debating. READ MORE>> PreK Visits Local Fire Station
In Pre-K we went on a field trip to the firehouse on Rhode Island Avenue. We learned about fire safety. We had the chance to see the firefighters slide down the pole and change into their gear. We learned about what to do if there if a fire in our home and what to do if our clothes catch on fire.
