Don't Miss the WEDJ Dance Company Production of On This Island on Thursday, February 28, 7pm
In honor of Black History Month, Dean of Teacher Development and fifth grade math teacher Tanisha Nugent, Dean of Fine Arts and dance teacher Brian Harris, and pre-kindergarten teaching assistant and dance teacher Stephanie Burrill have been working closely with the newly formed WEDJ Dance Company to rehearse On This Island, a celebration of dance with its roots in Caribbean traditions. The performance will be Thursday, February 28 at 7pm and all are welcome. Tickets are $5 in advance, available for purchase in the WEDJ front office, and $7 at the door. The first half of the production depicts slavery and the conditions of slaves in the Caribbean, while the second half of the show illustrates liberation. Special Opportunities for Music Students and Their Families TODAY, February 27 and Saturday, March 2
We are very pleased to announce two upcoming events for your music students at WEDJ PCS!
February 27 from 4:00 to 5:30: We will host an after school master class with famed violinist Elena Urioste. Solo performers will include a student string quartet and a current Concerto Competition winner from the Montgomery Classic Youth Orchestra. This is a great opportunity for our students to see what may be possible for their own musical achievements in the future and to see a master teacher work with more advanced students in a public forum. The master class is open to all music students and 6-8 grade art students. Families are welcome as well.
March 2 at 8 pm: You and your family are invited to attend the Elena Urioste and National Philharmonic concert entitled "The American Violin" at Strathmore Music Center. We are offering free tickets to students and families. This event is open to all music students and 6-8 grade art students and families. We will be in need of a final count in your party by February 28 for this free event.

Staff Spotlight: Kester Gregario
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Gregario came to the United States in 1991 and attended school in DC and Chicago.
How I Came to Love Computers
I'm a puzzle guy. I like to work on 3D puzzles like building a model of the Capitol. I've always liked taking stuff apart and putting it back together, doing puzzles, making model cars. I've always worked with my hands. A computer is just a box with a lot of moving parts you can play with. I wasn't fortunate enough to have a computer at home when I was growing up, so I always enjoyed working with computers at school. My A+ [computer certification course] teacher in high school opened my mind to the possibility of getting into technology as a career.

Sixth-Graders Model and Teach the Spirit of Cooperation in Assembly for Peers

The WEDJ sixth-graders recently planned and presented a successful assembly for their peers on the theme of cooperation.
Preparing for the assembly "really forced them to work together," explained sixth-grade teacher Evelyn Exum. "They had a lot of ideas about what they wanted to do, including murals, poems, raps, step teams, flash mobs." Because they only had an hour in which to illustrate cooperation, the students had to make tough decisions. "They collectively decided which acts would or wouldn't work," Ms. Exum said.
