What You Need to Know about WEDJ's New Enrollment Process This Year

Now is the time to re-enroll your student at WEDJ to guarantee his or her spot for this coming school year. New enrollment procedures are in place and it's important to follow them to secure your child's educational future. This is also the time to tell friends, family, and neighbors about WEDJ if they have students who wish to attend in the fall. March 15 is the deadline for new and returning students to apply for enrollment at WEDJ for the 2013-2014 school year.

If fewer students apply for a particular grade than we have spots available, all applicants will be guaranteed a spot. These students MUST confirm acceptance by April 12. If they do NOT confirm, their spot will not be reserved.

If more students apply for a particular grade than we have spots available, we will hold a lottery for all grades where this is the case, on March 22. To be entered into this lottery, you MUST have applied by March 15.

Even if your child is currently a WEDJ student, he or she is not guaranteed a spot for next year unless you reapply by March 15. When current students apply, they are given preference for available spots. If you wait until after March 15 to apply, you give up your guaranteed spot and will be placed on a waiting list in order of date of application.

Research & Technology Course Helps Middle School Students Master 21st Century Skills

Research & Technology is a brand new course for middle school students at WEDJ, an exciting part of this school year. The course is divided into three different levels: novice for the 6th grade, apprentice for the 7th grade, and expert for 8th grade.

Students are working on research into their own topics. They were matched with faculty advisers who guide them and give them tips on how to gather valid information and data from the internet and different sources such as books and magazines. Students complete different activities during each session and are graded based on their progress.

Technology is integrated into the course through PowerPoint, iMovie, and web design. In PowerPoint, students learn how to organize slides, create exciting slide transitions, animate text, apply a design to each slide, and add music to their presentation.

Preparation Begins for Science Fair Coming in March
Grades 3-5 are off to a great start with Science Fair 2013. Students are excited and we are anticipating some awesome projects and concepts. The Science Fair will allow students to practice scientific inquiry, develop critical problem solving skills, answer higher order thinking questions, and become junior researchers. The first step to having a great Science Fair project is discovery. Students are encouraged to choose topics they are passionate about; many will discover new interests as we progress.

Seventh Graders Comparing Ancient Civilizations to Their Lives Today
In seventh-grade grade social studies, the kids are learning about ancient India and Ancient China. We just finished a unit on Hinduism and Buddhism, in which students discussed the key concepts in both religions and wrote essays comparing the the principles of Buddhism to modern culture and their own lives. We are moving on to a unit on Ancient China that focuses on the great philosopher Confucius, and his ideas about relationships between people, their families, their friends, and the community.

Backstage at Mulan
Greetings from the PTA!

We would like to thank everyone who attended our last PTA meeting. Our theme was school safety. A huge thanks to WEDJ's Director of Safety, Mr. Lonnie Brooks, for being our special guest speaker. He discussed a few changes WEDJ has made in its security policy since the tragic incident that occurred in Newtown, CT. If you need further information, please contact Mr. Brooks.
