A Message from the Principal: Thanks to Volunteers

This month I listened to four enthusiastic WEDJ volunteers state their case about why they were eager to represent the school as PTA officers. (Please see the PTA article below to meet them!) I was also moved by the meeting of our school grade representatives who also take on a lead role in a key school committee.

Being a volunteer is a wonderful example for young people. The research on student success is linked to parents volunteerism. Families who can be involved at WEDJ are increasing their child's options for success in school. If you have an interest in any of the WEDJ committees or would like the PTA to support additional committees, visit the WEDJ website!

Peer Teaching Program Helps Everyone Learn

WEDJ seventh-graders have been taking on the role of teacher in PreK through fifth-grade classes in recent weeks, as part of the peer teaching course they've been taking this past semester. Dr. Smith and Ms. Rave have been instructing the seventh-graders in how to organize and teach a lesson. "Teaching is the best way to learn," said Dr. Smith. "When you teach, you retain 90% of what you learned," as opposed to 10% of what we read or 20% of what we hear. After spending several weeks in the classroom, the young teachers will return to their own class to learn how to design lesson plans that they will bring back to the younger students in the spring.

Congratulations to five WEDJ students whose poems have been selected for publication in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans! We are so proud of Kenneth Riley, Kiona Jackson, Krasil Bradshaw, Pierre Kearney, and Jordan Coffer for their hard work and creativity!

Kindergarten students in Ms. Kensler's class have been learning all about two- and three-dimensional shapes. They are now able to create two-dimensional shape structures, use their bodies to act out shape structures such as columns, arches, domes, and beams that are found in various types of architecture. They can also construct and deconstruct cones, cubes, cylinders, and rectangular prisms.

A Letter from Outgoing Executive Director and New WEDJ Board Chair John Goldman

Thank you for the warm send-off that students and staff recently gave me as I stepped down from my role as WEDJ executive director. It was an honor to serve as your executive director and to have the opportunity to oversee significant changes as WEDJ, such as creating our innovative arts partnerships with the Kirov Academy of Ballet, the National Philharmonic, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Hello and Happy Holidays!

It is with great honor that I serve as one of your leaders. Of course, I can't do it alone, so at this time I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to my partners and team: Vice President Lauren Szewczyk, Secretary Tiffani Nicole, and Treasurer Sara Hamilton. I look forward to working with the officers and all the WEDJ parents and teachers.
