If I Can Dream - Elvis Presley Connections

Elvis Presley (1935 - 1977) is known as the King of Rock and Roll. He was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. He later moved to Memphis, Tennessee. During his 42 year life span, he changed the world as a singer, performer, actor, and entertainer. He left a lasting mark and it is certainly a shame that his life ended so abruptly in 1977.
Growing up in Miami, David Wolf became a fan of Elvis Presley. While he never attended an Elvis Presley concert and never met the legend, David spent countless hours listening to Elvis' songs and, yes, watching the predictable somewhat corny movies. Over time, David certainly became a big fan and connoisseur of sorts of the music catalog of Elvis Presley. Little did David know as he became a full fledged fan of Elvis Presley that he would have some lasting and interesting connections to Elvis Presley.
Connection #1. Robin Bloom Wolf. Robin and David have been married for over 20 years. They met in high school and have known each other for over 33 years. Wow! Robin's birthday is on the same calendar date as the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley.
Connection #2. Father of Robin Bloom Wolf. Eugene "Bucky" Bloom was born in the Tupelo, Mississippi. This is the birth place of Elvis Presley. Bucky and Elvis were born just two years apart. Tupelo, Mississippi is located in Lee County. It is approximately 98 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. The population of Tupelo in the 1930s was in the range of 6,000 - 7,000 residents. It is interesting to note that the Bloom Family and Presley Family lived in the same small community. Amazing!
Connection #3. Grandparents of Robin Bloom Wolf. Here is another Bloom Family connection to the King of Rock and Roll. The Bloom Family owned a women's clothing store in Downtown Tupelo. As it turns out, one customer of the store was Gladys Presley. That's right, the mother of Elvis Presley was a regular customer of the store.
Connection #4. Clarence M. Wood - Partner of David Wolf and Attorney for Elvis Presley. Back in 1957, Elvis Presley performed at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville, Florida. There were concerns that a local judge, Judge Gooding, was going to arrest Elvis Presley for indecency if Elvis shook or gyrated too much or in an inappropriate manner. As such, the management for Elvis Presley lined up a bright local attorney by the name of Clarence M. Wood to be "on call" if Elvis was arrested. Clarence Wood waited patiently back stage during the performance and briefly met Elvis at the Florida Theater. Fortunately for Elvis, there was no arrest made during his visit to Jacksonville in 1957. For Clarence, there was no attorney fee and no 15 minutes of fame. However, there was the satisfaction of being recognized as a young and able attorney who could get the job done if he was needed by Elvis Presley.
To this day, David A. Wolf continues to be a fan of Elvis Presley. His favorite station on Sirius XM Satellite Radio is Channel 9 - the Elvis Channel. His favorite Elvis Presley song is titled "If I Can Dream." This song was written especially for Elvis Presley in the wake of the assassination of civil rights activist Martin Luther King in 1968. The song was performed on the Elvis TV Special for NBC otherwise known as the Comeback Special. The first verse of this wonderful song is as follows:
There must be lights burning brighter somewhere Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue If I can dream of a better land Where all my brothers walk hand in hand Tell me why, on why, on why can't my dream come true.
"If I Can Dream" is truly one of Elvis' most powerfully and artistically performed songs which truly showed his range and talent as a singer and performer. The song itself has a wonderful message of hope for a better world and a better tomorrow.
David A. Wolf keeps the words and anthem of "If I Can Dream" in mind as he begins and works through each day. You should too.
