Five 2-minute things that'll save you money & keep your appliances working well

Prevent mold growth & rusting in your dishwasher

The space between the door and the tub is a haven for mold because this area remains untouched during the wash cycles. Monthly, run a warm, wet cloth along this area. This will keep your dishwasher clean and smelling fresh.

Bonus tip: One of the most common issues with dishwasher racks is that with use, the plastic coating on the dish racks' tines wears off, exposing the metal and leading to corrosion and rusting. Rusted bits of metal can be very sharp and can damage the pump or tub seals so it's wise to take care of this right away.

RepairClinic.com sells repair kits and paint in common dish rack colors including light blue, gray and white.

Take a close look at your washing machine's water supply hoses

Over time, with regular use, washing machine water supply hoses may leak or burst, causing flooding and requiring expensive repairs in your home. Most washing machine manufacturers recommend replacing the black rubber water hoses every five years.

Homeowners should check these hoses periodically for signs of damage or weakness. A small blister anywhere on the hose may be a sign of more serious damage that can lead to rupture.

Recommended related items:

Washing machine water shutoff system

This system can help to prevent a water flooding disaster by automatically shutting off the water flow, should your washing machine's fill hoses burst or its water level switch malfunction. Installation is easy and takes just a few minutes. No special tools are needed.

Keep your range free of spills and drips

Never use an oven cleaning solution on an oven that has a self-cleaning function. Residue from the solution can damage the inside of the oven during the self-clean cycle.

Once drip pans and bowls become stained, it's a good idea to replace them, as removing stains may be impossible. As a bonus, clean drip pans reflect heat better which speeds up the cooking time.

Clean out your dryer's lint screen after every load

Dryer lint screens should be cleaned out after every load. As an extra precaution, homeowners can use a bristled brush to remove stubborn pieces of lint and pieces that collect in the screen's housing. A screen with tears should be replaced immediately.

Annually, lint buildup in clothes dryers and dryer venting results in thousands of residential fires.

Note: This will take more than a few minutes but it's extremely important so we've included it: Even if you do clean out your dryer lint screen with each load, your dryer's venting system should be cleaned out from inside of the dryer to the outside vent cap at least once per year.  Professionals can be hired for this or you can purchase a long brush to clean out the venting from the back of the dryer to the outside on your own and save money.
