Water your lawn and plants with a hose in the morning or in the evening once weekly.
You can save several gallons of water every week by adjusting your watering schedule. Because there is greater water evaporation in the middle of the day, watering in the morning or evening enables more water to reach roots.

"Frequent watering for short periods will cause your lawn's root system to remain close to the surface and therefore more susceptible to disease," explained Jeff Linderman, RepairClinic.com's landscaping expert.  "In most parts of the U.S. and Canada, you should water your grass weekly but keep the water flowing for a lengthy period to allow for deeper saturation. This will result in deeper root growth and a healthier, more drought resistant lawn."

Fertilize your plants, shrubbery and trees.

Most people know that fertilizing lawns in fall provides a healthier lawn come spring. But many people don't realize that fall is also an extremely important time to fertilize the other important elements of your yard: plants, shrubbery and trees, which often live in mulch-covered beds. As autumn arrives, mulch will decompose, taking with them the nitrogen that's important to the health of the plants, shrubbery and trees.

Also, most people rake fallen tree leaves, eliminating any nutrients that would be left from the decomposing leaves. Nitrogen-rich fertilizer is a good idea for improved root growth.

Additionally, for your lawn, you should consider a fertilizer with a weed-control formula. Not only will this help eliminate weeds now, it will make spring weed control significantly easier.

Plant colorful fall flowers in terra-cotta planters.
Mums and other fall favorites are an inexpensive and easy way to dress up your yard. Arrange them on your front porch or near your steps to give your home an instant, warm autumn look. Terra-cotta pots are best for container plants because unlike ceramic pots, terra-cotta pots have porous walls for better air flow. Better air flow enables water to move more easily. The result? Stronger roots and a healthier plant.
