3 Things That Can Save You Money This Fall
|

1. Use a pressure washer: It's the next best thing to a fresh paint job
Fall is a common time for home exterior painting but it's an expensive and time-consuming project. Customers have told us that after pressure washing their homes' exteriors, they realize that fresh painting isn't even necessary. A thorough wash can dramatically improve the appearance of wood, vinyl and steel siding. TIP: Home siding should be thoroughly cleaned once per year; it's an essential first step before painting. Beyond cosmetic purposes, a pressure washer removes mold and algae that can grow in the crevices. This growth can eat away at your siding and lead to expensive repairs or replacement.
Get your Briggs & Stratton, Craftsman or other brand pressure washer (a.k.a. power washer) ready for the job by reviewing its owner's manual and following its maintenance requirements. Trigger-style handles, hoses and other pressure washer parts and accessories are available at RepairClinic.com. Have your model number handy and click here. 2. Prep your outdoor power equipment for storage
After a long summer, it's important to inspect your equipment for wear and/or damage. Review your gear's owner's manuals and then carefully inspect blades and belts for wear. It's a great time for replacement.
If your mower has an hydraulic transmission, it's wise to check the fluid filter if equipped, and make sure all of the plastic cooling fans are intact. It's common for sticks and twigs to get trapped and break the plastic fan blades, causing the transmission to overheat.
Replace dull mower blades
Dull mower blades tear, rather than cut, and the result is a lawn with a common white/yellow hue at the surface. Sharp blades provide a proper cut for a more vibrant green appearance. Also, old blades are a safety hazard as the metal can become brittle and pieces have been known to break off and be catapulted at high speeds. Blades are inexpensive to replace.
If you need replacement parts of any kind, order them now at 10% off and avoid downtime this fall and next spring.
Clean your mowers
For Jeff Linderman, RepairClinic.com's on-staff landscaping expert and owner of a successful landscaping business, the end of August marks outdoor power equipment maintenance time.
"At the top of the list should be cleaning the underside of your lawn mowers," Linderman advises. "Grass is more corrosive to equipment than most people recognize. Rusting is inevitable when wet grass sticks to a mower's deck so periodic cleaning is a must."

Add fuel stabilizer to small engines
Search for item #2226498
Many of us will make room in our sheds and garages for our lawn mowers and other small engines to spend the winter season. One of the most important steps in preparing this equipment for storage is the addition of fuel stabilizer. Fuel is made of compounds that change as it ages. Adding stabilizer to fuel helps keep it fresher longer and slows damaging buildup that can clog fuel lines when fuel is stored for extended periods. TIP: Can I add fuel stabilizer to fuel that's already been sitting unused for a month or so?
It's likely that there is already buildup in the fuel. Fuel stabilizer only slows build up; it cannot remove the gummy substance that has already formed. That's why stabilizer should be added when the fuel is fresh.

Engine/Equipment Degreaser
Search for item #2304543
This Briggs & Stratton degreaser eliminates oil spots on engines and equipment.
TIP: Why is it important to use an engine/equipment degreaser? Oils spot collect dust and debris, which can block air passages to the engine and result in damaging overheating problems. Before storing our lawn mowers and other equipment, we spray this degreaser on greasy and dirty areas. Let the degreaser sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe the sprayed area with a clean cloth, rinse off it off with a hose and dry completely.

3. Reduce energy consumption in your kitchen and laundry room Clean off your refrigerator's condenser coils
Layers of dust and dirt prevent a refrigerator's condenser coils from removing heat efficiently. This results in significantly greater energy consumption and higher bills for you. These coils are notably less vulnerable to problems if cleaned every 12 to 18 months. If you have pets, you may need to increase cleaning frequency to every six months, as pet fur is known to form thick layers quickly.
Consider the following tools:
Long-Handled Bristle Brush
Search for item #12859 Some refrigerators and freezers have condenser coils located at the back of the machine. This brush makes it easy to gently brush away dust and dirt from the coils.
Vacuum Hose Attachment Search for item #1544893 This convenient tool enables you to easily clean dust and dust from your refrigerator's condenser coils located beneath the machine. It also works great for removing residual lint in your dryer's lint trap. It fits a standard 1.25-inch vacuum hose.
Clean out your dryer venting system & reduce its energy consumption

LintEater Rotary Dryer Vent Cleaning Kit
Search for item #1154681
This kit includes everything you need to clean out your dryer venting system, on your own. It includes four 3-foot long extension rods, a four-inch-diameter brush head, a shop-vacuum attachment, a dryer adapter, a narrow brush head, an outdoor gutter cleaning head, instructional booklet and instructional DVD.
TIP: Why is it important to clean out my vent? If you notice that it's taking longer for your clothes to dry, your dryer is using greater amount of energy because there is likely a lint buildup problem. Dryers cause thousands of major house fires every year in the U.S. due to lint buildup. A dryers' venting system should be cleaned out from inside of the dryer to the outside vent cap at least once a year.
