Greetings!

Companies continue to use Executive Coaching and there is growing evidence of its effectiveness (Stober & Grant, 2009). Many coaches avoid what they see as "remedial" coaching, focusing instead on helping accomplished leaders become even more successful. One thing we know about coaching is this: working with motivated high achievers is likely to enhance their leadership capabilities.

However, what about leaders who are high performers but  who are perceived as having major limitations in their interpersonal conduct? How effective is coaching in this situation?

I recently participated in a 4 day seminar with Laura Crawshaw, Ph.D. who specializes in coaching "Abrasive Leaders".  She makes a compelling case with both research and practical examples for why this work is highly effective and rewarding for both individuals and companies.  This newsletter focuses on this specialized population; I hope you find it of value.

The "BLT" ..... Betty's Leadership Tip
(suitable for vegetarians)

We all have the potential to be abrasive at times, and the impact of our behavior can be greater than we expect.

Think about what pushes your buttons...whether it be a particular situation (stressful meetings, deadlines, projects) or a specific individual.  What happens  when this trigger goes off? Do you lash out verbally, are you sarcastic, or overly critical? Are you passive-aggressive?

Now, next time you are in this situation, pause...and think about an alternative way to respond. It may not work the first time, but if you keep at it you may find yourself successfully avoiding a potentially disruptive behavior pattern.
