Going into the hospital?

Due to privacy laws, churches are no longer routinely informed if you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital.  Please be sure you let us know when and where you will be a patient so we can be in touch with you and include you in our prayers and healing ministry. Don't assume the Vicar knows - he would much rather hear from several people than from no one!

From the Vicar...
The Triduum marathon
As you receive this, Maundy Thursday's liturgy will soon be upon us. Thus begins a virtual liturgical marathon: the Sacred Triduum or Three Sacred Days of our redemption.

We begin at Christ Church at 7:00 this evening with the washing of the feet, a celebration of Jesus' institution of the sacrament of his Body and Blood, and the solemn stripping of the altar in preparation for Good Friday. On the surface, it is a service that seems joyful - yet it never lets us forget that our celebration takes place in the shadow of the Cross.

Jesus gathered with his disciples in the context of the greatest of all events in Israel's redemption: the Exodus and Passover. That, too, was joyful...until...betrayal, misunderstanding and fear transcended the joy of that evening, and transformed it into a farewell feast and final chance for Jesus to show his love and servant ministry by washing the disciples' feet.

On Good Friday our Maundy Thursday worship continues. (Here's a liturgical curiosity: the Maundy Thursday liturgy contains no "dismissal." The entire cycle, from Maundy Thursday, through Good Friday, to the Easter Vigil, is all one marathon service.) During our Stations of the Cross at noon at Christ Church and the Solemn Good Friday liturgy at 7 p.m. at Trinity, we will hear scriptural accounts of Jesus' trial, suffering, and death and meditate upon these musically, with a quiet sermon and the Veneration of the Cross to the strains of a powerful Good Friday hymn.

On Saturday evening at 7:30, the Great Easter Vigil is offered at Christ Church. We will gather in the darkness of the night on which Jesus rose from the dead and celebrate a "Christian Passover": the Passover of Jesus from death into life and our own Passover from death to life in Holy Baptism. It is a four-part liturgy: The Service of Light (lighting of the paschal candle), The Vigil (a recollection of events in our salvation history), a Renewal of Baptismal Vows, and The Holy Eucharist. "In sign and sacrament, holy story and song, the dying and rising of Jesus in the midst of his people is once again realized. Sharing in the holy gifts of the altar, we find ourselves made one with Christ and rejoice in this foretaste of the glory of God's Kingdom." (Michael W. Merriman, The Rite Light, p. 85)

The Triduum marathon celebrating our redemption concludes on Easter morning as we celebrate the Feast of the Lord's Resurrection at our 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. services, the former at Trinity, the latter at Christ Church. Being perhaps a "fool for Christ" kind of marathoner, I'll be adding to that the 6:15 a.m. sunrise service at North Beach in Hampton.

Through the Triduum, we literally walk and journey with Christ from the washing of the disciples' feet to the celebration of the Last Supper, to the Agony in the Garden, through the Passion and Crucifixion, to the celebration and joy of the Resurrection. It is a powerful and moving experience that all Episcopalians should experience if they are able to. Come...join the marathon!

Christ Church now using hypoallergenic incense

In response to your requests for a more pleasingly aromatic -- and less irritating -- variety of incense, we have now purchased a hypoallergenic variety that should prove much more comfortable for those who are sensitive. (We will also cut down on the quantity used.) Our first use of this hypoallergenic blend will be at this Saturday evening's Easter Vigil. By the way, you might appreciate the irony: the brand (remember, this is being used at Christ Church) is Trinity Brand incense!

Our Shared Ministry Cycle of Prayer

Each week, in both of our churches, we pray for one ministry we share and one or two households in each church. About once every six weeks, we will instead using the Shared Ministry Collect we prayed throughout the opening months of our Shared Ministry.

In our prayers the next two weeks, we give God thanks for...

Fundraiser for Discretionary Fund is now underway

Between now and the Day of Pentecost (May 15), we will be undertaking a fundraiser for the Vicar's Discretionary Fund. Peter Monte (at Christ Church) and Gordon Lane (at Trinity Church) will be selling raffle tickets for a $200 gift card from the Atlantic Grill in Rye. Tickets are $15 each or three for $30. See Peter or Gordon at coffee hour if you'd like to help us beef up this Fund, which helps people in need both within our congregations and in the community at large.

Notes from the March Bishop's Committee meeting

The March meeting, held at Trinity Church, opened with a meditation Episcopal priest and writer, Tom Ehrich, titled, "This is how the revolution will happen." In it, he suggests that, beyond all the rhetoric - and even vitriol - of the current political season, we as Christians are called to "shine the light of Christ so brightly that the darkness cannot put it out."

In shared business, the Bishop's Committee:
  • Heard a report from the Bylaw Review Team outlining their process for reviewing the bylaws of the two churches and comparing them with the Diocesan model bylaws
  • Heard a report on the Fair Share adjustment process, which is wrapping up later this week. As soon as we know the Diocesan Council's response, we'll get out the word
  • Heard from our Communications ministry about efforts to switch the E-News from the Constant Contact system we are now using (which costs $120 per year for each church) to the free MailChimp platform
  • Finalized the list of ministry coordinators and liaisons for 2016 (see below)
In individual business, the two Bishop's Committees acted as follows:
  • The Christ Church committee reviewed progress on the Capital Campaign projects, and noted that there are some anomalies to deal with in recording contributions. Counters had sometimes recorded contributions under the wrong category, resulting in errors needing correction in the monthly financial statements.
  • The Trinity Church group signed final contracts with the various tenants of Hobbs House and outlined preliminary plans to raise funds to retire the church's remaining Advance Fund debt and complete a couple of small projects needed this year.
Full minutes will be posted when they become available. The next meetings will be the annual Bishop's Committee retreat on Saturday, April 16 in York Harbor, Maine; and on Tuesday, April 19 at Christ Church.

Calendar raffle for our Shared Ministry

The calendars have been printed and are now available for sale!  There are items worth approximately $1,500 in prizes and you can win up to 30 times for the month.  Please be sure to buy a calendar from a church member and pick up additional copies to sell to your friends!  You may also email the Shared Ministry Office to purchase a calendar at trinity55ad@gmail.com.

For anyone that donated gift cards or items to the calendar, please bring the items to church and give them to Fr. Chip or me so that they can be available.

Throughout the month of April, we will be publishing the winners of our daily Calendar fundraiser drawings. Cindy Robinson will draw a name each morning starting April 1 and the winner will be notified they've won - and how to retrieve their gift. All names go back in the basket - so each person has thirty chances to win. One reminder to our Calendar sellers: If you are selling to someone outside our congregations, put your name on the back of the ticket so we can convey the gift via you.
