From the Vicar...
A great story of how one small church reversed its death spiral
Just before they left to take up residence in New York's Adirondacks, Paul and Linda Seward of Christ Church (who I deeply miss!) gave me a wonderful little book about a small church somewhat like ours that found a way to turn around after a long march toward ecclesiastical death.
The book, Real Good Church by the Rev. Molly Baskette, offers a look at everything First Church Somerville UCC, a progressive Christian church in the shadow of Harvard, MIT and Tufts Universities, did to reverse their death spiral and become the healthy, stable, spirited and robust community it is today.
The triumphant renewal is highly visible in the increased presence of children and young adults in the church, a six-fold increase in pledged giving in the last decade, and most importantly in the spirit of joy that pervades the community.
The strategies they used can work in almost any church, in any setting: regardless of denomination, demographics, or, Baskette believes, political landscape. The book addresses topics like outreach and growth strategies, finances and giving, creative worship, church conflict and change, anxiety and laughter, and much more - all treated with humor and offering real, practical, immediate steps for getting started.
In the book, Baskette tells the story of how First Church transformed from a community of 35 worshippers on a financially dismal trajectory into a thriving, fiscally stable congregation four times that size in one decade. In twelve chapters with multiple subheadings, Baskette, the congregation's pastor, addresses what worked and what didn't (the last chapter is entitled "Epic Failures"), covering how she and her church leadership addressed such issues as property, pastoral care, outreach, stewardship, conflict, and more.
Throughout the book, key themes get repeated mention: celebrate, bless everything, communicate an open and affirming welcome, spend money to grow. Sound, practical advice on everything from coffee hour to electronic giving, along with an appendix including recommended reading, sample job descriptions, liturgies, guest cards, and sermons makes this an invaluable, accessible resource for clergy and laity passionate about church revitalization.
If anyone would like to borrow my copy, they may (provided they promise to give it back!). If you'd like a copy of your own, it is easily available on Amazon and through other online booksellers. There is much we can learn from it - even if not every prescription it offers fits our less urban setting. The principles are sound and "translatable."

Joint picnic set for Saturday, August 8
Liz Malone and Lynda Swartz have graciously offered their spacious backyard in Hampton Falls for a joint picnic for both our congregations on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. We'll need some help getting six tables and at least a few chairs from Trinity and everyone should bring a lawn chair. As for food, we'll need rolls, and the usual pot luck food - side dishes, salads, beverages or desserts. The Bishop's Committee will take care of hot dogs and hamburgers. We'll also need some help getting things set up - so any who can come early to help out with that are welcome to do so. The address is 14 Kensington Road (Route 84), Hampton Falls, and their telephone number is 603-929-1719. If folks are unsure what to bring, they can call Lynda and Liz for suggestions. Another thing is if people have lawn games like badminton, volleyball or other, they can bring them. Come join us for a fun day!
Laying on of Hands this Sunday at Christ Church;
second Sundays of each month this fall
Due to the length of Bishop Curry's sermon last Sunday, we have postponed the Laying on of Hands for healing at Christ Church, normally observed on the first Sunday of the month, to this Sunday, Aug. 9. As the first Sundays this fall all would make the inclusion of this pastoral ministry difficult (Labor Day weekend in Sept.; Blessing of the Animals in Oct.; All Saints' Day in Nov.), we will be offering the ministry of healing on the second Sunday of each month this fall.
Trinity to offer Monday evening "Family Night Out"
This fall, we will be introducing a new program at Trinity Church: a "family night out" on the first and third Mondays of each month. The program will begin Monday, Sept. 21 and will continue in October on the 5th and 19th.
How does the new program work? During the school year, we will meet two Mondays a month, 5:30-7:00 p.m., in Hobbs Hall. We begin with dinner (free!) - which we'll be publicizing in a variety of places to try and garner interest. This is followed by a Bible story or other children's activity, and a very brief communion service. All are welcome to participate in all parts of the gathering, including communion.
Questions? Interested in helping? Please contact Fr Chip! We need food preparers and servers, helpers with the children's program, and set-up and clean-up help. Our plan is to have Trinity provide food on the third Monday of each month, with Village Pre-School staff and parents providing food on the first Monday of each month. We are currently reviewing samples of proposed curriculum for the children's education portion of the program. Be watching for further details as they emerge.

Honoring Martyr Jonathan Daniels
Christ Church, Exeter - Wed., Aug. 19, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Join us as we gather together to watch Here am I, Send Me: The Story of Jonathan Daniels. The year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of Jonathan Daniels, who was assassinated on August 20, 1965 at the height of the Civil Rights movement in Hayneville, AL. Jonathan grew up in Keene, New Hampshire where he worshiped at St. James Episcopal Church and was a seminarian at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass. He went south answering the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for clergy to help register black voters. We will show the 50 minute documentary in Harris Hall at Christ Church, Exeter, where desserts and coffee will be provided.
Our Shared Ministry Cycle of Prayer
Each week, in both of our churches, we pray for one ministry we share and one or two households in each church. About once every six weeks, we will instead using the Shared Ministry Collect we prayed throughout the opening months of our Shared Ministry.
In our prayers the next two weeks, we give God thanks for...

Can You Help?
Trinity's Annual Yard Sale has been penciled in for Saturday, Aug. 15th.
Not only do we need your good, used, ready to sell "stuff" but we also need help to setup, sell, break-down and tow away the leftovers. Donations can be dropped off in Hobbs Hall no sooner than the Sunday before the sale. Let me know how you can help!

Dear Friends and Dreamers...
I have scheduled the Dream Group meetings for Aug. at Trinity Episcopal Church 200 High St. Hampton. There is a new time and we will see if it fits our needs. The time is 3:00 to 4:30 on Tues afternoons.
Yes, you can leave early or come without a dream. The first meeting we will hear from Paula Reeves and the similarities between dreams and fairy tales and the purpose of both. NOT The Disney versions of fairy tales, but the "real deal." Bring your own dream written down. We will reconnect and share our souls messages and our inner images.
Please sign up by via dream-time@comcast.net. Hope to see you there.
