In honor of those who gave the supreme sacrifice for our freedoms.
____________________
We remember you. Through all the years and all the changes. Through the memories that make us laugh and the memories that make us cry. We remember you. You are still a part of us and always will be. You are woven into us, knitted into us, wrapped into our hearts like a warm shawl, held tightly in the arms of our love, brought near when the nights grow cold. You live in us. You made that life possible. You sacrificed so that it might be. You walked out before us, sheltered us with your courage, stood guard against our fear, and brought us to this place where our children still play. We will not forget. We will remember you. Always.

Going into the hospital?
Due to privacy laws, churches are no longer routinely informed if you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital. Please be sure you let us know when and where you will be a patient so we can be in touch with you and include you in our prayers and healing ministry. Don't assume the Vicar knows - he would much rather hear from several people than from no one!

From the Vicar...
Turning ourselves inside out - so we can grow
Here's a bit of trivia for you: According to statistics compiled from parochial reports around the country, the average Sunday attendance for the Episcopal Church stands at about 800,000. That means that, on any given Sunday, about 0.3% of the population of the United States is attending an Episcopal church. Needless to say, there is tremendous opportunity for the Episcopal Church to grow beyond 0.3%.
A second bit of trivia is "like unto it" (to use an old Prayer Book phrase): It is estimated that only 20% of the general population of New Hampshire has any weekly contact with a faith community. That means that each of us knows, works with, socializes with or lives next door to people who hunger spiritually - but have no community within which to explore and meet that hunger.
Have we spoken with them of our faith and the difference it makes in our lives? That's a question worth pondering. It wouldn't take many of them to increase our "market share" (awful term, I know...) from .03% to .05%! By "turning ourselves inside out" we have some real potential for growth!
Last February, in our "Come and See" program, we got off to a modest - but significant - start at being more inviting. We had hoped for 20 guests between our two churches those three weekends. We had six. A great start, especially considering the dismal weather we had - but we need to "keep at it."
Perhaps the question before us is this: Do we really want to grow? We said we wanted to grow when we began planning for "Come and See." And we've adopted a growth goal that has been met (and even exceeded!) at Trinity - but not yet at Christ Church. We need to continue praying, working, and giving to make our dreams of growth come true. Contagious enthusiasm is what will make the difference. Let's set our sights on working in partnership with God to make it happen.
In Christ,
Fr. Chip
Our Celebrant on May 31 and June 1
This week, Fr. Chip and Cindy are away, celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary. On Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1, our Celebrant at both churches will be the Rev. David Plank. David and his wife Fran are regular communicants at Trinity Church, and spent much of their ministry in shared ministries such as ours in the Diocese of Long Island. We warmly welcome him to our altars that weekend.
Let's wear red for Pentecost!
On the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, June 8, we will continue our custom of wearing red as a small sign that the Holy Spirit lives within each of us. Our services in both churches that day will feature some powerful Pentecost hymns - including some from more contemporary sources - and a multi-lingual reading of the Acts passage describing the manifestation of the Holy Spirit (see below). I'll be adorned in bright red vestments, the altar will be decked in red as well - why don't we all wear red to make the scene a "sea" of Pentecost color! Fr. Chip
Do you know a language other than English?
We will be reading the lesson from Acts on Pentecost (June 8th) in a variety of languages in both churches. We have several translations, and are looking for people to read them. So if you speak something other than English, see Betty Lane (at Christ Church) or Fr. Chip (at Trinity) this Sunday to volunteer to help enrich our Pentecost celebration.
Then on Pentecost evening...
Join us as Christ Church, Portsmouth, hosts a Seacoast Convocation Pentecost Taizé service. This 7:00 p.m. service of prayer, song and contemplation is sponsored by all six of our Seacoast Episcopal congregations, and will be offered to the general public. If you have not experienced a worship service in the style of the Taizé community in France, you have missed an extraordinary worship opportunity. Be watching next week's E-News for further details on this beautiful and meditative service.
Healing ministry
Each month, both of our churches offer the Laying on of Hands with Anointing for Healing. At Christ Church, this occurs at the conclusion of the Eucharist on the first Sunday of the month. At Trinity Church, it is an integral part of the Saturday evening liturgy the third weekend of the month. We will hold the next healing liturgy at at Christ Church on Sunday, June 8th (one week late as the Vicar will be away June 1st); the next such service at Trinity Church will be on Saturday, June 21st.
Grubby Sunday" clean-up June 1 at Christ Church
This spring's "Grubby Sunday" clean-up at Christ Church will occur on Sunday, June 1, with a general clean-up of the church grounds and such season projects as placing screens in the windows and air conditioners in the offices. As always, "many hands make light work," so come in your jeans and "grubbies" and join us! - Craig Davis and Paul Seward-

Notes from the May Bishop's Committee meeting
This month's meeting began with some updates from Fr. Chip, including a report on the recent Lay Leadership Conference and updates of our various follow-up teams. The next general meeting of our teams will be on Tuesday, June 10 at Trinity. The Evangelism group has been actively pursuing its work and the Facilities group should have a report by that time.
The individual break-out sessions of the two Bishop's Committees followed:
- The Christ Church group spent some time reflecting on Sunday's congregational conversation. A variety of valuable ideas came forward for "A Fresh Start for Christ Church." It was suggested that there be a field trip to St. David's, Kennebunk to see an example of a church that has a flexible, yet worshipful, liturgical space like that discussed at the meeting. The group was also apprised that Christ Church's new bookkeeper, Eric Foster, was now on board and would receive his Safe Church training later in the week.
- Trinity's committee voted to accept a memorial gift from former member Barbara Carlson of a brass wall cross to be placed behind the altar. Work continues on developing a better relationship with the Village Pre-School. George Koch will be our liaison with them, and will attend their next board meeting. Restoration of the Hobbs House floor will occur over the summer with volunteer labor. Robert Bischoff will also be attending to the repair and repainting of the Hobbs House stage.
In other business:
- The Isles of Shoals presentation was a tremendous success, netting each church $410 in clear revenue. Speaker Stephanie Voss Nugent will be back for a second presentation in late October.
- A Time and Talent drive will be conducted in early June, similar to the model introduced last year. Each committee chair and/or Bishop's Committee liaison will receive a report so follow-up can be made.
- A series of outdoor services and other summer events were planned. See the schedule elsewhere in this edition of the E-News for details.
Full minutes will be posted at each church when they become available. The June meeting will be on the 17th at 7 p.m. at Christ Church.
Women's Singing Out's second concert of their 2014 season will be presented on Saturday, June 7th at 7 pm and Sunday, June 8th at 3 pm at Christ Church. This Spring Concert celebrates the beauty and fierceness of the natural world. Join us for a musical journey that will restore your soul, motivate you, and make you smile! See Betty Lane or Suzanne George for tickets.
Women Singing OUT! will also be performing at NH Audubon's 100 Year Anniversary Celebration at the Massabesic Audubon Center in Auburn, New Hampshire, on Sunday, June 1st at 3:00pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling 603-668-2045
