It is in the quiet hours, the still spaces between demand and need, that we can find God patiently waiting, like an elder reading a book, dozing gently the dreams that make our world, listening for the sound of rain, keeping watch over the gentle hearts that pray in whispers, remembering all the good times that give memory its warmth, the God of stories told to children, of late night truth telling, of comfort and of courage, yes that God, the forever companion, wisdom beneath eyes that see to the very beginning, God of the quiet hours, of love and of meaning.

Going into the hospital?
Due to privacy laws, churches are no longer routinely informed if you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital. Please be sure you let us know when and where you will be a patient so we can be in touch with you and include you in our prayers and healing ministry. Don't assume the Vicar knows - he would much rather hear from several people than from no one!

From the Vicar...
Looking ahead to Holy Week and Easter
We are nearing Holy Week: indeed, Palm Sunday is a little more than a week away. Holy Week, the heart of the Church's Year and the annual jewel of its life of liturgy, is almost upon us. What I want to emphasize as this powerful and moving time approaches, is that all Holy Week liturgies are in fact Easter liturgies. The sovereign principle which runs through each one is that on the third day God raised Jesus from the tomb; that Christ is risen. Even in the depths of the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday, the Church is showing how profound our Lord's victory is, as he shows solidarity with us even in the worst throes of abandonment and death. Holy Week is the public presentation, in liturgy, through music and preaching, of those mighty acts whereby God in Christ has reconciled the world to God's self.
It has been said that attending the Easter liturgy without attending the Holy Week services is like watching the happy ending of a movie without seeing the middle - you only rob yourself of joy. I pray that each of you will allow our Holy Week services to wash over you, that your Easter joy may be all that much fuller when it breaks upon you.
Faithfully,
Fr. Chip
Palm Sunday, April 13
8:45 a.m. at Trinity Church; 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church
This Sunday before Easter is the last Sunday in Lent. The day commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem with a blessing of palms and a procession in which the whole congregation carries palms. The day is also marked by reading the story of Jesus' Passion according to Matthew. (Note: No Saturdayevening service at Trinity on April 12.)
Holy Tuesday, April 15
7:00 p.m. joint liturgy at Trinity Church
The Office of Tenebrae recreates the emotional aspects of the passion story. The service begins with the church in candlelight. There are candles arranged on what is known as a "candle hearse," one of which is extinguished at the conclusion of each of several readings, plus a white Christ candle at the center of the hearse. After each reading, one candle is extinguished, until only the Christ candle remains. At the conclusion, a loud noise is made, representing the thunderclap at the time of Jesus' death on the cross, and the service ends.
Maundy Thursday, April 17
7:00 p.m. joint liturgy at Christ Church
This day is a time for remembering the Last Supper and the washing of the disciples' feet. The name comes from the Latin word maundatum for "commandment" as Jesus said, "I give you a new commandment; that you love one another." At the conclusion of this 7:00 p.m. service, the altar is stripped and the reserved sacrament is processed to the altar of repose, where it remains until the Great Vigil of Easter.
Good Friday, April 18
2:00 p.m. Stations of the Cross at Christ Church
7:00 p.m. Joint Good Friday Liturgy at Trinity Church
The Friday in Holy Week is a time for remembering Jesus' death. The evening service, at 7:00 p.m., recounts John's version of the Passion and includes the praying of the Solemn Collects of Good Friday and the Veneration of the Cross. Note: There are also ecumenical services in both Portsmouth and Hampton - both at noon. In Portsmouth, St. John's is the host; in Hampton, the Methodist Church is hosting.
Great Vigil of Easter, April 19
8:00 p.m. joint liturgy at Christ Church
This service is appropriate from after sunset on Holy Saturday, and thus will occur this year at 8:00 p.m. This service begins in darkness, when a new fire is lit, from which the Paschal (Easter) candle is lighted. It signifies the light of Christ coming into the world anew at the resurrection. A series of scripture readings recount the history of our salvation. The renewal of baptismal vows follows. The service closes with the first Eucharist of Easter. (Note: No Saturday evening service at Trinity on April 19.)
Easter Day, April 20
8:45 a.m. at Trinity Church; 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church
The "Queen of Feasts" is celebrated with full fanfare at both churches. At Christ Church, a children's sermon will be offered in place of the usual sermon (an Easter sermon having been preached at the Vigil the night before), and, as at Christmas, we will involve children in the liturgy. An Easter Egg Hunt follows.
Good Friday Offering
Since 1922, Episcopalians have supported the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East through the Good Friday Offering. Through the work of the Episcopal dioceses in the Middle East, Christians maintain a peacemaking and stabilizing presence in the region, serving their neighbors regardless of faith background. To make a donation to the Good Friday Offering, please write a check payable to Trinity Church, with the memo, "Good Friday Offering." A plate will be stationed at the rear of the church to receive your offering at the Good Friday liturgy.
You asked for it...Fr. Chip's sermons online
The suggestion was made at last month's Bishop's Committee meeting that our Vicar post his sermons on the church websites. Beginning this week, they are now posted. You will find them linked to the "Worship" page on our websites:
Our Shared Ministry Cycle of Prayer this week and next

A new ministry at Sanctuary Care in Rye
This month, Christ Church is beginning a new ministry at Sanctuary Memory Care on Route One in Rye. On the fourth Thursday of each month, an ecumenical service for residents will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Fr. Chip will provide the general leadership. It is hoped volunteers might take an interest in assisting, either by offering readings, assisting residents with their service booklets, or - if we have any among us who have this ability - playing the piano for the hymns. If you are interested in helping us with this ministry (from either church), speak with Fr. Chip
Music Ministry
Please consider joining one of our choirs. Trinity Church's choir meets in rehearsal on Sundays at 8 a.m. At Christ Church, the rehearsal follows the 10:30 a.m. service.
Every voice is welcome; every voice is special; every voice is needed.
