Christ Church

Be healed of what harms you. Be whole and free and restored to the fullness of your life. Be strong in your spirit. Be clear in your mind. Be unafraid and confident of what is to come. Be renewed in your faith. Be renewed in your hope. Be renewed in your love. Let all of these blessings surround you. Let them enfold you. Claim them and build your future on them. They are your birthright. They are the truth beneath your struggles. They are the enduring grace that forever seeks to find you. Take this gift of blessing. It is for you. It is why you awoke this day. It is your new life.

Going into the hospital?

Due to privacy laws, churches are no longer routinely informed if you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital.  Please be sure you let us know when and where you will be a patient so we can be in touch with you and include you in our prayers and healing ministry. Don't assume the Vicar knows - he would much rather hear from several people than from no one!

From the Vicar...though not BY the Vicar...

Some brief Lenten thoughts

Last week, I shared with you a rather long meditation (OK, full confession, it was condensed from a sermon I preached some years ago). Today, I'm going for "short and pithy." These snippets are from a collection of "Lenten Text Messages." Unfortunately, I don't know who the authors are - but, again, full disclosure, these are not original to me.

We are all pilgrims on the road...

Let this season of Lent remind us all that this life we have and the material possessions we hold are just being "lent" to us. We're all passersby. We're not immigrants here. We're all pilgrims on the road. We bring nothing when we die. But we can leave behind the love we've shared, the hope we have given and the goodness we've done. May we all have a meaningful Lent.

At what time of the year do we celebrate love?

Most might think of Valentine's Day, but not many would think of Holy Week. And why not Lent? This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him... an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. When we do, God lives in us...

What is Christian maturity?

  • It is silence when our words would hurt;
  • It is patience when we're being hurt;
  • It is deafness when scandal flows;
  • It is thoughtfulness for another's woes; -It is sharing whatever little we have; &
  • It is being kind rather than being right most of the time.

God deserves a pause...

In this world, Someone stands behind; silently loving us; reaching out a hand when we've fallen; encouraging us when we're tested and in fear; understanding us when no one does; pointing us the light when we are in the dark... God deserves a pause...a hug...a thank you...because we are wrapped in a beautiful truth that..."we are loved without measure."

Have a fruitful Lent...

Fr. Chip

"Via Media" Lenten program continues

Via Media is a 6-week education series open to anyone who is curious or interested in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition. Each of the Via Media sessions begins with a meal and then a short video about some aspect of our faith. A portion of our time together is dedicated to open discussion and conversation as well. All people are encouraged to ask questions and to learn how to answer their own questions of faith.

At Trinity Church, Hampton...  Sessions will be held Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. in Hobbs Hall, beginning with a simple soup and bread supper followed by the video and discussion.

At Christ Church, Portsmouth...

Sessions will be held Sundays at 12:00 noon. Each session will begin with a soup and bread lunch in the Marshall Room (the room where coffee hour is held), and will continue with video and discussion in the classroom next door.

This week and next...

Healing ministry

Each month, both of our churches offer the Laying on of Hands with Anointing for Healing. At Christ Church, this occurs at the conclusion of the Eucharist on the first Sunday of the month. At Trinity Church, it is an integral part of the Saturday evening liturgy the third weekend of the month.  The next healing liturgy at Christ Church will be on April 6th.

Notes from the March Bishop's Committee meeting

The March meeting, held at Trinity Church, opened with a reflection by Christ Church's clerk, Linda Seward on Micah 6:8, "To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God." After a review of recent events and prayer concerns, the individual bishop's committees went into session. The Christ Church committee discussed the upcoming capital campaign and took note of its need for additional lay altar ministers. The Trinity Church committee discussed its relationship with the Village Pre-School, and brainstormed names of people to fill some of the roles Senior Warden Patrice Wood would like to let go of.

Fr. Chip provided a report on the recent Fair Share adjustment process. Our two churches were granted a combined $10,000 in Fair Share abatements, but it was left to the Bishop's Committee to allocate those funds between the two churches. A proposal was accepted unanimously to allocate the abatement according to the percentage of combined revenue each church represented - 46% to Christ Church; 54% to Trinity. There was some question as to whether we'd be able to achieve the relatively balanced budgets we'd anticipated for 2014, as the amount we were granted was some $3,500 less than we had asked for.

A major portion of the meeting was devoted to further follow-up on the goals articulated at February's retreat, particularly looking at ways to integrate the goals of the two churches so we could tackle them together, drawing on one another's strengths and resources. Our recent "Come and See" program was an example of this kind of cooperation, and while there were some things we might do differently in offering the program a second time, the sight of new faces in our midst has been a welcome one.

In other business:

  • Gordon Lane and Patrice Wood reported on the recent Evangelism Forum in Laconia. Several fruitful ideas came out of that gathering that reinforced the efforts we are making here.
  • Several fundraising events were discussed, including a two-part program by Stephanie Nugent on lore and legends of the Isle of Shoals to be presented later this year. Part one would occur as a joint program at Hobbs House in May. The second part would be this coming fall.
  • It was learned that Little Blessings has an interest in purchasing a van or bus to succeed the "Holy Roller" bus. In something of a reversal of roles, they would own the bus and lend it to our shared ministry for our use as needed. We discussed donating the current bus to them for use as a "trade in" toward that purchase.

Full minutes will be posted as soon as they are available. The April meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 22 (one week later than usual due to Holy Week) at 7 p.m. at Christ Church.

A letter to the editor of the Hampton Union

This Tuesday, a letter to the editor appeared in the Hampton Union praising our ministry and encouraging people to come and see all that we are doing here. Bob Gallagher, one of our newer members at Trinity, was the author. Click here to read the letter.

"Road to Repeal" vigil set for Hampton on March 23

On Sunday, March 23, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Hampton will serve as the starting point for a "Road to Repeal" vigil to express the support of local faith communities for the death penalty repeal bill now making its way through the state Senate. The New Hampshire Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty is the prime sponsor, with support from the N. H. Council of Churches and the N. H. Board of Jewish Clergy co-sponsoring. The Seacoast chapter of the NAACP is also a sponsor. Trinity Church will be one of the stops on the march. For details, see the recent New Hampshire Episcopal News and the Coalition's website: www.nodeathpenaltynh.org.

Christ Church would like to have more people share in the various ministries for Sunday morning. We would especially like to have more crucifers and torch bearers, whether young people or adults. If you are interested in serving, speak with Fr. Chip. Training will be provided.

A new ministry at Sanctuary Care in Rye

This month, Christ Church is beginning a new ministry at Sanctuary Memory Care on Route One in Rye. On the fourth Thursday of each month, an ecumenical service for residents will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Fr. Chip will provide the general leadership. It is hoped volunteers might take an interest in assisting, either by offering readings, assisting residents with their service booklets, or - if we have any among us who have this ability - playing the piano for the hymns. If you are interested in helping us with this ministry (from either church), speak with Fr. Chip
